Hey guys,
Just picked up a used 40GB PS3 with controller and cables for $55!! I really only wanted this one for its streaming capabilities, but if I can fix whats wrong with it, even better. Everything works fine except no games or blurays. I can play DVDs and CDs fine, but with a bluray, I just get the little spinning circle in the top right.

Would it be the laser...eventhough DVDs and CDs work?

Thanks!

If this was one of my main PS3's, I would forsure, but this is a 3rd one for the bedroom that the main goal is just to stream media from my media PC. If I could fix it cheap, I would do that, but I'm in Canada and to send to Sony, its $200 bucks.

Then just stream with it and be happy. Or find a game repair place in Canada that can fix the laser for $99. You did try the removing the hard drive trick, right?

Nope! I formatted it, set it back to defaults, updated the firmware, and tested it out. Remove the drive and place it back in?

Sounds like a new laser would do the job. I had one that would off and on read a DVD, but no BR discs. Lasers are $65 or so, and not too tough to replace.

honestly, I would use this machine a bit more before I went out and got a laser. The reason I say this is that the last thing you want to have happen is take the time to get a laser, install it, only for it to go YLOD afterwards. Then you'll have no other choice but to send to Sony and you'll be out cost of laser/150 to Sony

If your in Canada, I found two places to get lasers without the nightmare of us duties and whatnot. PM me.

This.

there's no way to know if it was just a PS3 with a broken laser, or if it was a YLOD unit that was Reflowed. Reflowed YLOD's typically only last 1-3 months.

Is the warranty seal broken?

I noticed that the screw that holds the top plate on is missing, so I'm guessing its been fully opened. Well, maybe I'll try cleaning the laser and just use it for streaming and see what happens. Still very happy to pick up a PS3 with contoller and cables for $55 Canadian!

Thanks guys for all the help and suggestions

I'd be careful. If you're picking up such cheap "broken" PS3s off eBay chances are they're probably stolen. Sony has the serial numbers of these. You could be out a lot more than $50.

Good luck.

I work with the police deptartment, so I'll keep my eye out! If it was working A1, maybe...but to him, it was a useless busted item that wouldn't play his blurays or games. I got his license plate number, so I'm good.

IMO, working PS3s are more likely to be stolen.... than the broken ones.

Yeah, if they are stealing broken ones, they are not very good thieves. =P

Tell that to the *******s who stole a broken $15 deck from my car, causing $2000 damage to the interior.

If they were smart, they wouldn't be petty thieves.

Holy crap!!! So today I finally had a few minutes to look at this. I took it apart and right away, the smell of cigeratte smoke was nuts. I took the cover off the bluray drive and gave the lens a good (but gentle) cleaning and then blew it with some compressed air. I gave the back of the PS3 a good vaccumming too, looked pretty dusty back there.

Put it all back together and guess what...it works! Blurays and games load and play without a hitch!

Does someone in the household smoke?

People never tend to think about it, but years of cigarette smoke can adversely affect high end CE, especially things that need airflow or things like projection systems.

Not in my house, but by the smell of it, the person I got this from did...there was probably a nice yellow film over the laser...there certainly was over everything else. I was actually excited when I saw the dirt when I took the cover off!
