Sadly two of my movies iron man and the dark knight have two small scuffs or nicks on the back of them. Im not sure how it happened, maybe i need to be more careful with my discs.

Regardless they skip about half way through, and skip over 1 scene each (about 4 minutes) is there anything I can do to try to fix this, or do I have to simply purchase new copies?

Someone can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong at this, but I believe BDs supposedly have a protective coating. Once you get a scratch that's severe enough to get through the coating, the disc is probably damaged as the data on BDs is very close to the surface of the disc. This is why they put that coating on there in the first place.

Again, someone can feel free to slap me if I'm wrong because I very well could be. This is just what I heard, but I can't guarantee whether it's true or not.

That sounds accurate, so i guess the small knick was probably deep enough it has affected the data.

Guess I will purchase new ones.

If you're considering purchasing new ones anyway, it won't hurt to try and clean them. I would try a soft cloth and some cd cleaning fluid. Only wipe in a straight line away from the center of the disc, and don't use anything abrasive. Especially don't use one those the CD cleaning machines, because they will destroy a Blu-ray disc.

Ya you can be a guinea pig for various cleaning methods and let us know what works best! :D

Sucks though, hope you find some great deals to replace it with. You could always try and trade them in or sell them to a store and let some other person (or the employees there) deal with the hassle.

I have close to 70 Blu-ray discs and while I'm careful with them, I don't worship them. Sometimes, I leave them around without their case. I don't have any scratches. I think it would take a sharp hit to make a scratch.

i had an experience with the pretective coat split at one end
(upcourse i bought a used movie from amazon) i got a replacement though

The protective coat layer is very thin layer of sheet which took a lot of abusive and its not that easy to scratch that deep

whihc is good

Are both sides of the disc coated? I was under the impression that only the bottom, the side that is read was coated.

Ya just the data side, no need to protect the fancy graphics! :)

talk about contradictory statements.
I never leave anything around without a case and don't feel I 'worship' anything.

We have PS3 discs being abused, and several BRDs. REPLACE option.
Can't be fixed with current buffing machines.

However, there is a new commercial buffing machine now out which claims to fix BRDs. I will try and get a demo next week. As BRDs become more common, scratches will increase.

I've actually been using the Kleer Screen products on my LCD TV, I purchased a kit with a Microfiber towel and Microfiber polishing cloth with their spray. I liked their polishing cloth (http://www.klearscreen.com/detail.aspx?ID=7) so well, I picked up another one just for my discs.

This is definitely the highest quality Microfiber cloth I have seen to date, (I use a lot of these when cleaning/waxing my car). Some Microfiber cloths are plain cheap and can scratch paint, so be very careful which ones you buy.

Their spray (http://www.klearscreen.com/detail.aspx?ID=86) is very good as well. It sprays out a very fine mist, removes static and is non-toxic and contains no alcohol, ammonia, or sodium sulfates.

Yeah, I'll second that, thanks vläd.

I've just been stewing over screen cloths/cleaners, and by chance I ran across this post, serendipity.

While I have no doubt that the KlearScreen cloth is a good one (they make many other good products), you can easily find high quality ones for fairly cheap at most drugstores or LensCrafters or any other eyeglass care store. After all, they're not going to sell low-quality cloths that can scratch your glasses.

So im not sure if im paranoid or not. Ironman, and batman, and now i noticed a small skip in there will be blood, this ones only 20 seconds, and nothing important happens, one probably wouldnt even notice.

Anyway I started to worry maybe somethings wrong with my ps3 laser? I rented defiance, it also skipped, i looked at it though, and there were no scratches but lots of smudges. I cleaned it and seemed to work fine. I also got burn after reading for 9 dollars in the previous viewed section. I went through it quickly but no skips on that.

I went through some of my older blue rays like kill bill 1, and no skips there detected.

So Im asking maybe i need to be more careful with my discs, or is it likely the laser in my ps3 has an issue?

I used to never run into this problem, is it just bad luck, im curious if others have had any blue rays skipped, rented or purchased?

I should mention almost all my blue rays are new, 90 percent. Incase someone thinks im basing this off of previous viewed copies.
