View Full Version : PS3 died - won't boot

Hi all, I was just watching a DVD and my PS3 just completely went dead.

I am unable to boot it up now, I tried a new AC cable but that did not good. Is there any hope or is it more or less fried. There was no power surge or anything like that. It's an older model from 2007, I believe it's a 60 GB.

In addition, even with the power button on in back, there is no red light as you would expect on the front.

Thanks

Power supply. Easy to replace and cheap part - $50 or you can call Sony for
the coffin which is $162.34

Ok thanks, I should have guessed.

I am assuming there is a guide online somewhere showing how to replace the PSU? -- I'll do a Bing search.

cheers

Repalcing the PSU is as simple as removing the lid, undoing the 4 screws that hold it down, and one or two connectors. Probably take 10 minutes tops.

It's dead Jim

I have a hunch it's due to heat issues from some very dusty units. I'd recommend weekly dusting, even if a pain in the ass.

Yeah, I used to do that but haven't lately and noticed my PS3 is getting hotter and louder lately. One of the drawbacks of internal psu I guess. Time to bust out my shop vac and electronic dust attachment kit.

Right and you are making that comment based on the fact you have eyes and ears on both MS and Sony repair lines, and on all the people who have PS3 and 360's...

This is a followup to my original post above to say that I decided to have Sony fix my PS3.

The process could not have been more easy, fast, and efficient. The entire turn around from start to finish took about 10 days. Sony sent me a prepaid shipping container for my PS3 which I simply dropped off at UPS down the street. The other benefit is that for your 150.00 you also get a 90 day warranty as well. (My 60 GB unit was well out of warranty so having a new 90 day one is nice)

The downside was that the hard drive was initialized when I received the PS3 back so I lost all my saved games. That's my bad I never once backed up the saved games (I am assuming there is a way). My computer data is backed up every single day, I just don't know why it never occurred to me to do the same for my PS3.

In the end I am glad I went this route instead of trying to get a PSU from a seller on Ebay. Sure it probably would have cost half the price but in the end I am glad to not have had to deal with what I regard are constant hassles of buying stuff from sellers on Ebay.

Is Sony fixing your console and then sending them back, or are you getting a totally different console?

Same model but definitely a refurb. It has a different serial number.

Any way to fight this? Will Sony send me another one? I was over warranty when I sent it back so I had to pay the 'repair' fee with my credit card. They do extend the warranty by 90 days with this repair so I might as well give it a try.

The service is very fast and hassle free. When I sent my 60GB in I received the same one back, though mine was still (barely) under warranty. Should not make a difference as this is a service to repair your old unit, and since you are paying you should get the choice to get your old one back or a different one.

I plan on keeping my 60GB, if it has another problem I will send it for repair only if I get the same one back.
