View Full Version : What $ for a G70 with good blue and/or a "hail mary" sell me clean blue for 127x
atomiccow 06-24-09, 02:52 AM I'm ready to upgrade my 127X and have been surprised not many G70 projectors are going up on Ebay. There are no CRTs for sale in this forum.
And its also frustrating people used to always post pictures of the tubes and
now they almost never do. I have some money coming in and might also entertain a ludicrous price on a clean blue for my 1271 if anyone is willing to sacrifice.
I take it there is still nothing to compete with CRT under 2000 dollars?

To some extent there are fewer projectors available mostly because the dropping prices (like a rock for anything less than a 9") is making folks less interested in selling them. In many cases it is easier and more profitable to break them up. And those two trends make it a little harder to find a whole proejctor these days. That said there are some amazing deals if you look these days. I recently upgraded to a 9" for a good price.
Personally I think there are now digitals that can compete quite well with CRT for $2000 or less. It really depends on what you are looking to do and whether or not the hassle of the CRT is worth its few advantages these days. Of course all this depends on your location. The North American market is what I am familiar with.
Edit: As to why folks don't post pictures of the tube faces my theories are that one, they are lazy and don't think they are going to get enough $ for it to be worht the hassle and/or two, they know the tubes are toast.
Personally I think there are now digitals that can compete quite well with CRT for $2000 or less. .What digitals would that be? I can think of quite a few that compete with crt in the $4-6K price range but I can't seem to think of any for $2000 or less.
draganm 06-24-09, 02:43 PM there's 3 G70's on videogon between $600. to $1000. asking price. If you want tube pics then ask the seller to send them to you.

I don't believe that there are any less CRTs available that there were say a couple of years ago!
...you just need to be patient and look for them! (I prefer to do it locally!!!)
Sure there are less online as far as ebay and videogon is concerned, but they do show up on the sites mentioned above, also look in places like CL and kijijji, there seems to be better deals there!
As mentioned before be patient and you will find them eventually.
Good luck on your hunt
Martin
on another note:
There is a barco reality 908 3d tables "thingie" on ebay! asking price is 5k, now, if only it was local! (That way I/we could have inspected it and see what shape it is in!...and whether worth the asking price!)
Ericglo 06-24-09, 07:41 PM I agree with Secstate. The market has dropped out, because the people that bought the most have gone digital. I think he has also hit the nail on the head with digital. I am going to Cedia this year and am looking forward to seeing if any of the under $3k digitals make CRTs obsolete. Of course, the resellers like Martin will continue to beat the drum of CRTs superiority.
Martin,
I think you are missing the mark. Most of the CRTs that are coming up are from private sellers. Even those are getting fewer and much farther between. Yes, there are still CRTs being dumped in LA, but that is a not the norm. Five years ago, the gov auction would have a lot of pjs being dumped every month. Now, they are all but dried up.
Tim Wilkins 06-24-09, 08:59 PM I apologize for buying all of the new CRT's on eBay for the 1271 model. I managed to stock pile 3 sets. I have 2 1271's myself and an almost new NEC XG110. I'd be hard pressed to part with any of these. I'm just not satisfied with what I am seeing out there in digital. I swear every time I come home from viewing a DLP projected movie I have a headache. Ha one good thing a thief would be a little hesitant trying to steal my CRT projector(s).

Do you have both the 1271 and the XG setup? That's quite a leap in performance... If you've got the XG setup, I'm surprised you'd still be interested in stocking tubes for the 1271.

Prices are getting to where it's not worth the effort to crate and ship or the parts are worth more than the projector (USPS insurance on the lenses they lost, a focus coil sale, and remote sale weren't too far off what I would have sold my entire 1292 for a couple years ago and I didn't have to ship much over 50 pounds at a time).
I have some money coming in and might also entertain a ludicrous price on a clean blue for my 1271 if anyone is willing to sacrifice.
I bought a pallet of NOS tubes to get a blue for my 1292 and sold the 07MSP RGB set as a trio for more than some 1272 projectors went for, all or nothing. It's a captive audience (what's it worth to you not to buy, ship, mount, and setup a different projector?) You could always go to VDC. While painful it would be less expensive than an acceptable digital and less work (at 100 hours a week for the people paying the bills I barely have time for one meal out with my wife and two beers with the guys once a week).

This is also my theory. Everyone now has toasty tubes. I'd be interested in what you think is worthy for under two grand. The two fussy things for me is I like that there is no sense of a digital pattern on a CRT and of course that when the screen goes black, its black. I do wish I could get the more brilliant whites of a digital.

What's this about? I'm from LA. Is there a government auctiony thing getting these. I'm just curious if I am in CRT dumping central and not knowing it. I never see CRTs on Craigslist or the Recycler. I'd way rather get something I can drive to even if its in Northern California or Las Vegas.

Look up this post again if you ever change your mind. I hate to think you got the Ebay one in Oceanside a year or so ago. I was really broke and a new blue sold in Oceanside which is a modest drive from my home. A new blue went for 56 dollars! I was heartsick when I saw I could have had a tube like that if I had bid 100.
atomiccow 06-25-09, 02:17 PM I'd probably pay $250 for a clean blue. There were times I'd have paid more. But it seems more than that I should put the money into a G70.
draganm 06-25-09, 02:18 PM I do wish I could get the more brilliant whites of a digital. you can with a Da-lite high power 2.8 gain screen. It takes CRT toa new level in terms of peak white.
This is also my theory. Everyone now has toasty tubes. I'd be interested in what you think is worthy for under two grand. re-tubed 8500 with re-built electronics. You will be giving up the LC of the G70 but you'll be gaining double the reliability from a Marquee IMO.

If you have tips on how you find locally I'd be interested. I haven't had any luck on Craigslist or our local Recycler. I've sort of given up on that venue.

Eric
I am not a reseller, just an enthusiast, like many others here!
...nor do I think that there aren't any "superior" digitals! ...there certainly are...just not at the same price as say an clean 8 inch machine!
I mean short of spending 15/30k s on a triple chip marantz/Runco or something...you are out of luck!
For that same 2ks you can get an almost "brand new" shape 8 inch Marquee that will put the same 6/10k digital to shame. (... assuming you don't get a "primate" to set it up for you! LOL)
Anyhow, yes there are less for sale than there were say 4 years ago!
The bottom has dropped! (what I was getting at is that if you are patient and know a deal when you see one... they are around!)
... and yes the government liquidator are pretty much "liquidated" when it comes to CRTs. (... so you have to look elsewhere!)
Martin
ADDED:
Nashou, I think that those (2) two longbows ultras are in San jose!
AC: I have bought at least 4 CRTs from CL in the LA section in the past (5) years! (... also sold a few myself there! ... most of the time they are misadvertised under "huge obsolete dead weight TV" that "needs new bulbs" category!) The tech says 100 bucks to fix... but I don't wanna do it so I am passing the savings on to you!
If you are searching by model number and CRT projector: "All you will get is rear projection mitsubishis that are "fuzzy" and also need a "new bulb"!!!" (... So if you are looking by model number all you will get is the occasional 5k asking price for a mint 15ks hour sony 1030Q that the seller somehow manage to list properly by model number! Common guys you got to give him credit for that one! the same guy managed to list his 1030Q over and over in the last 2 years for the same asking price! ... At least he is not giving up!)
Oh and guess what It will do HD also!!!
Then sometimes you get this guy:
http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/ele/1243937635.html
I wonder how he hit that jackpot!
... and all that he wants for them are: "desert toys" or "sand rail" for each one! (... for the kids of course!)

I got mine off of eBay maybe 2 yrs ago. The seller was from TX and they were all new in the box. I just kept checking eBay about everyday for them when I got mine.
I am only using a 1271 right now. The other 1271 and NEC I have stored and turn them on regularly.
I still say a CRT out performs any other display device in terms of black. All of the others still don't have a true black. That can make a big difference in the picture contrast in my opinion.

1271 -> XG110 should be a pretty decent step up, why not set up the XG and put the 1271 in storage???
atomiccow 07-01-09, 02:21 AM Dear Broadway,
I was pretty stupid about other brands all these years. I knew they were there but thought they were difficult and always broke and had trouble. I was afraid of them because my Sony never gave me a day of trouble in seven years. I got a big education this week and began considering things I never had. An XG would have been outstanding. But last week I never would have known that.
As you've probably seen I just bought a clean G70 for 800. Its sort of thanks to this particular thread as it introduced me to the Videogon auctions.

I'll tell you Tim Wilkins what I have appreciated about black on a CRT in the last two years that makes me think its certainly one of the very most important things in any display. Because all my walls are dark, When a scene cuts to black, I am suddenly in a pitch dark room where I cant see anything. Its an emotional experience; however brief, to suddenly not be able to see anything.
When it goes black and you still can see a rectangle, its a very different thing. You aren't disoriented. It doesn't trigger primal fears.
