View Full Version : GH:WT Dolby digital issues
loki993 06-24-09, 01:49 PM ok I just got GH:WT, just getting into the GH fad the GF loves it :), anyway we moved recently and hadnt hooked up the surround sound yet, well after getting the game I had to hook it up figuring it would sound fantastic in surround, well....I dont know what the problem is, but the game is not outputting in DD I dont think. during startup and in the menus it seems the be in surround, but once a song starts it seems to be in stereo mode and it sounds like crap, the sound is flat and there is not bass, it literally sounded better on my TV speakers. Ive looked and it says theres a option to turn on DD in the audio menu, there is not, ive updated the game and theres still not an option. anybody else have this problem?
BTW my receiver is a onkyo 605 ans when the games playing it displays multichannel or direct I would think it should say dolby digital.
You failed to mention how you have your 605 connected to the PS3. But I assume it's HDMI since you said it displays Multichannel or direct. That being the case you wont see the DD because the PS3 is doing the decoding of the DD and just sending the Multi Ch output to the 605. However you should have full surround sound. Have you gone through and did the Mic surround set up with 605? have you tried to switch to "surround mode"? I dont have any problems with GH WT and surround sound from my PS3/Onkyo 804 combo. The surround stage is really front heavy (supposed to be) But you can still hear the crowd cheer and clap from the surrounds, and once you get Star Power going the surrounds fill in a lil more. Sounds fine to me. Certainly better than sound through the TV speakers.
loki993 06-24-09, 04:18 PM it is connected through HDMI. I did the mic surround setup with the receiver, but I have changed the levels because it makes the center too quiet and the fronts too loud. ill have to check on the surround mode, im not really sure how to switch to that, Like I said when I hit the surround button switches through the modes it only goes between multi and direct. I just cant believe that it its running in surround sound, like I said it sounds bad, no color very flat, no depth and absolutely no bass. granted its louder than it was on the TV, but still. If this is the way its supposed to sound than im very disappointed.
just getting into the GH fad the GF loves it
You should've skipped over the GH fad and gotten into the Rock Band fad :D Honestly, World Tour has a better starting setlist than RB2 in my opinion, but the sheer amount of quality songs on the RB store blow my mind and World Tour's is like a bad joke.
Make sure to get the free song packs off the PSN; they include the best song in the game, Electro Rock.
confidenceman 06-24-09, 06:02 PM Most important question: Have you noticed any similar issues with other games or with movies?
From what you're describing, it sounds like the PS3 is sending exactly what you're telling it to send. If your AVR says "multichannel" and "direct," that means that the PS3 is sending multichannel PCM (as it should).
Double-check your audio output options under "sound settings" in the XMB. Make sure you have the correct output options selected (5.1/7.1 PCM as appropriate for your setup).
Double-check your speaker calibrations on your Onkyo. Maybe run the auto-calibration just to make sure everything is as it should be (crossover settings, volume levels).

How does this help his problem with GH audio?
Im with Confidenceman. Something doesnt sound right. (no pun) it sounds as if the PS3 is set up correctly. Run a double check on everything.

I probably be getting RB and or RB2 in the future and I just downloaded the free track packs today, havent had the chance to try them out yet.

honestly I just hooked up the surround yesterday, so I havent had the chance to try it with other games or movies. Id does work and sound good while playing TV, dish network, I have The Dark Knight DVRd and the surround works beautifully with that movie. Ill have to test some other things to see for sure.
is there or is there not a option to turn DD on and off in the guitar hero game menu?? Ive seem people on the internet say there is, but my game does not have it, I also got GH:3 today and I checked that one and it does not seem to have the option either.
confidenceman 06-25-09, 01:52 PM My guess, then, is that your PS3 isn't configured properly.
Do the auto configure in "sound settings" then report back.
Your setup is fine. The audio quality in ALL of the Guitar Hero games is crap. Rock Band has done it right with the sound as putting on the Bass Boost and the DD option makes the songs sound VERY full. In Guitar Hero, the surround sound is the arena you're in and the fans. NOT the music. This is why I have put my GH games on the shelf and don't play them anymore. They just didn't put the time into making the aural experience what it should be. Every time I hear of a new version of the game coming out (E.G. every other week) I just hope that they have improved the sound quality so that the game is fun to play. Sadly, I don't think they'd ever do that because they'd actually have to code something and put time into the game.
I'd bet it's just the Dolby Digital selection in the menu. I had to do this the other day and it was a big difference. I can't remember exactly how to get to it in the menu. It may be an option before you select your storage device, but it is there. I'll look tonight if you don't figure it out before then.
Edit: Guessing here but the toggle for Dolby Digital, maybe was in the sub-menu for calibrating lag.

Actually... since people want to turn this into a "which is better thread" Rock Band got it ALL WRONG when it comes to true Surround sound. Basically what Rock Band does is pump the music out ALL the speakers at roughly the same volume level (The easy route) GH actually did it right. In a real concert event the music comes at you from the front stage, and any surround you hear is usally echos of the front stage. You are NOT supposed to have the instruments on stage coming out the surrounds at the same volume level. (It can cause cancellation of the sound waves) Its harder to program delays of the front stage image into the surrounds than it is to pump music to all the speakers and put a -10 or -15db attenuation on the surrounds. Rock Band got it wrong. Dont believe me? Here's a test for you. Go out and get Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds Live at Radio City Music Hall on BluRay. This BR has been one of the most crittically acclaimed BR in recent years for PQ and SQ. Pop that sucker in your PS3 and listen to what comes out of the surround speakers..... Crowd noise is what you hear the most in the Surrounds NOT Dave or Tim's Guitars. Again this is what MANY top notch audiophiles claim to be one of the Best SQ Surround sound BR Discs on the market. And the Surrounds are filled with crowd noise and some Echo's of the guitars from the front stage. Louder is NOT always better. Rock Band pulled a win in the loudest competition..but pulls a BIG FAIL in terms of accurate surround sound reproduction.

I dont see an option for DD in any of the menus right now. Im hooked up via HDMI and the PS3 is putting out 48K 3/2.1 into my AVR. The PS3 is decoding the DD onboard. Im too lazy to hook up my Toslink and see if I can get the PS3 to actually send th DD signal to my AVR.

Games with DD will bitstream DD to your AVR over HDMI that way. ;)

That's definitely true, but then explain why the music in Rock Band sounds infinitely better than the music in Guitar Hero? Why do the guitars and drums sound tinny and muffled, while the guitars and drums in RB are full and immersive? I could care less if something is more "accurate" if to me it sounds worse. It's a similar argument with studio versus live recordings. If you've listened to Smells Like Teen Spirit live, as well as the studio version, you'd be pretty insane to think that the live version sounds better.

Again it's the loudness factor. The instruments are going to seem to sound better if they are played back at a louder volume through more speakers. But out of the box I think GH WT is a more accurate and gives a better sounding stage image to me. To each his own there. Your point about live vs studio recording of Smell Like teen Spirit is the perfect example of how much "touch up" work can be done in post production. It's the main reason most artist lip sync, because they have had so much "touch up" post recording work done that the live version of them singing, you'd swear there was an impostor on stage.
loki993 06-27-09, 12:36 PM I dont know, it does seem like its working because there is surround sound, but the music just doesnt have any bass....At all, its kind of disappointing. I still cant find this dolby digital check box people talk about.

Check the setting on the sub in the AVR. I know from running the mic set up on my Onkyo the sub setting changes BIG time, each time I do it. Sometimes it will set the sub at 0db gain others it will do +3 or +6db. One time it set the sub to -6db! And I always have the power output on the sub set to about 60%.
I am playing this on the 360 it may be different on the ps3. Don't flame me though I just want to help. On mine it's at the main game menu › options › settings › audio › should be a menu after you hit x on audio for the guitar, bass, mic levels. You should see a light on the bottom left corner a light that says dolby digtal below it. You should be able to toggle it there, I had to do this the other day, I think it may be defaulted as off. Let me know if you find it.
