View Full Version : Hooking up a M&K Volkswoofer 1B to my new Denon receiver
rxnewman 06-24-09, 10:44 PM I am putting a new system together and want to use my "older" M&K Volkswoofer 1B sub with new Def Tech Mythos speakers to complete a 5.1 system. I just need to know the best way to connect the M&K preouts (L/R) to my new Denon AVR-2309ci. The receiver has one preout connection and the sub has both left and right preout connectors. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thx

Buy a Y adapter and split the signal?
Jakeman02 06-24-09, 11:04 PM You can use a single audio cable to either the L or R inputs on the sub. Or as said above you can use a Y adapter to use both inputs on the sub, either will work. Using a Y sends a higher level signal to the sub but once level matched to the other speakers won't make a difference.
rxnewman 06-24-09, 11:33 PM Thanks for the great advice. I do have a Y-adapter but did not know if it would screw up to sound. Will hook it up and take it for a spin. Thx
Soundoctor 08-24-09, 10:00 PM It owuld be interesting to know how you made out since (as is usual on here, and most of these forums) the other respondents on here have NO IDEA what they're talking about.
The Volkswoofer has a pair of SPEAKER LEVEL inputs requiring at least a few volts , not -10dBV which is what comes out of a subwoofer connector at 'reference' level. Ref level is 85 dB for dialog with 20dB headroom for M&E, and that level is measured at 7 feet from the mains.
Therefore IF you have a typical LCR speaker which is about 8 ohms and has a sensitivity of about 91dB /1w/1m, then at 7 feet, it will require 1 watt which is about 2.8 volts going to your L or R speakers.
The issue with modern receivers is if you set the speakers to small, then there's no bass present at the LCR speaker terminals, therefore you cannot use the Volkswoofer.
You do have two other options, odd though they may be. If you have another amp lying around, or a old receiver perhaps, then feed the SUB OUT connector to an AUX IN of the other receiver, (say the Left channel) and then connect the Left speaker out to the Volkswoofer speaker input, and turn up the volume on this "aux" amp and it should work fine.
You are simply using that additional amp to raise the voltage from consumer "line level" to "speaker level".
The 2nd option is that the Volkswoofer has built-in a pair of caps to roll the mains off. As an interesting test, you may set your HT receiver L and R to "LARGE", and then feed the speaker outs of the HT receiver to the Volkswoofer INPUTS, then feed the OUTPUTS to your main L and R. This will insert a single order filter in series with your LR which will roll the fronts off before any low freq damage can be done to them, and at the same time at least allow you to hear a reasonable amount of bass.
Having said all that, I would save up and buy a more modern sub and connect it correctly, although you miught have a lot of fun experimenting and learning, if that's your thing.

The manual I have says otherwise. It describes the sub as having line-level RCA inputs. I can upload the entire manual (.pdf) and provide a link if necessary. Here are 4 screenshots of relevant sections of the manual.

Soundoctor 08-25-09, 10:41 PM Sorry if I confused anyone. The Volkswoofer is NOT the same as any of the V series shown in the list on the instruction manual.
In other words, a Volkswoofer 1B is not the same as a V1B.
I have posted a couple of pix here:
http://www.soundoctor.com/pix/sub_comparison.htm
In addition, in the time honored tradition of guitar manufacturers, guitar amp manufacturers, and other MI mfgs, neither the model numbers nor the serial numbers make much sense. IF ONLY they were a VIN !
There are the same model names with perhaps different things. There are custom switches. Sometimes some models have a toggle switch and others have a rotary switch. Sometimnes the same model is in a different cabinet. And that's the tip of the iceberg.
Sorry I can't help the OP any further.

But, based upon his posts, and that he didn't return to the thread, I think it is safe to assume that rxnewman's sub has line-level inputs. He mistakenly calls them "pre-outs" in his OP.
Soundoctor 09-06-09, 09:59 PM you're still wrong.

So, I assume his sub has pre-ins. 2 of them. L and R.
