A remake of the original PC game is headed to the 360 later this summer:

I really enjoyed the 1st one; never did try subsequent episodes. Fast and fun shoot 'em up!

Man I loved the first two on PC. A remake would be appreciated, but I wonder how different it will be than the PC version. Non-stretched true widescreen would be nice I guess. SS was significant for its ability to render an insane (in the hundreds) number of enemies onscreen with no slowdown, even with average hardware. I remember how amazing that game was, and thoroughly enjoyed the old-school strafe n run gameplay with lots of hidden areas.

This is one of the most mindless games I've ever played. Got really bored after a couple hours. Can't see myself spending more than 400pts on this.

I still have the xbox verison and bust it out from time to time, I wonder how the the remake will compare to the xbox verison?

As for mindless its no more mindless then say doom or unreal touranment.....
In a way it may be less mindless as you WJonathan said you can have a huge amount of enemies charging you and use of the right gun at the right moment is crucial.

I liked the levels on the gamecube verison the most.

It already has high res textures and can render on multiple screens simultaneously how can it be substantially upgraded? will it be crysis like now?

Go look at the screenshots. they really did a nice job. instead of having flat textures, they have features like bump mapping, etc. one of the beasts in the screenshots has 3D-looking scales like a lizard. no longer the flat textures of the pc version.

and they showed a shot with blades of grass! not just green textured floors.

this will make up for the terrible serious sam 2 or the xbox version of serious sam. that was a dog too.

first and second encounters for the win!!!

xbox version was terrible! if you want to really experience serious sam, you have to play the pc version. they made a bunch of compromises for the xbox version. they tweaked the graphics so that the main character looked less like duke nuke'em. the framerate, draw distance and resolution weren't that great on the xbox (i remember developers talking about challenges in squeezing things into that 64 MB of RAM). they simplified killing because of the change from keyboard/mouse to gamepad (should've copied halo better). there are excruciating load times on the xbox version. there are some additional lame cutscenes on the xbox version.

i'm not a big fan of split-screen action. nothing beat having a whole room of lanned pc's. i remember cramming 4 laptops into my college dorm room for a lan session. now, that doesn't sound like a lot, but you don't know how small my room is and how you had to get 4 desks in there for enough mouse space to move.

Nope.

Well, yeah it was utterly silly. But in a self-deprecating sort of way. They threw the insane plot elements and settings at you and dared you to try and make sense of it. As long it retains its sense of humor, that's what makes the simplicity of its gameplay acceptable.

hey does this game allow drop-in co-op? meaning that you can just pick a co-op game going on and just drop into the action? and did they state what is the max number of players? okay, just read that it's up to 16 players. that would be total chaos!!! but I think that would just be too many people for the number of enemies. you need to feel like you are being swarmed but an army of 16? and i can't imagine how they handle the available ammo unless they set persistent ammo.

and this game has online co-op gaming?

i've only played it on the pc and the xbox1 but on the xbox, it was all solo playing. and on the pc, it was all lan gaming.

I have no clue whether it's just serious sam with new graphics or they added functionality.

but I am a little confused on the recently announced second encounter game since it appears that first encounter version seems to have levels from second encounter.

A little OT but,
Played the PC version of SS HD for a bit yesterday, couldn't wait for the 360 release, and it's still about as fun as it was when it first came out... check your brain at the door and enjoy. Things certainly get much more intense about half way through the game and that's when it becomes the most fun. Playing it at 1080p with all settings maxed and it's smooth as silk, the newer engine (3) does a great job.

AMD Phenom II X4 @ 3.42ghz (air cooled), Sapphire Radeon 4890 1gig DDR5, 4 gig DDR3 1800, 1 TB SATAII 7200rpm/32mb hard drive. Obviously not a current 'High End' gaming rig but it plays everything I throw at it @ 1080p/60fps or better (clone mode on 24" LCD & 50" Plasma). I use the 360 controller as often as possible, so I can play on my plasma, even though I am an old school KB/M FPS'er. SS HD allows use of the 360 controller and it works great, I just use a wired controller since I don't have the wireless pc adapter.

They all (computers/laptops) use intergrated this or that, with the exception of one SFF I put a x300 in for dual dvi, so I could dual screen nice and easy.
I think the x300 was probaly worse then intergrated nvidia it replaced for gaming performance!

I downloaded the trail last night (360 version) and played it a bit.

Amazing how it brings back memories from 10 years ago.

If you liked it then, you'll probably like it now, They did a good job of ramping up the graphics, they're smooth, clean, and consistent. What's odd is because of that - it almost highlights how sterile the old game was. I remember playing this 10 years ago and being awed at the large expanses and draw distances, but with all games doing this now with full foilage, etc., it's a bit stale to see 300 yards away...with nothing there to break up the one texture on the ground.

The auto-aim + hit box of the enemies is almost ridiculously loose, meaning you can hop, aim in the general direction of an enemy and fire, and you'll almost always hit them. Although it felt odd at first, as more and more enemies fill the screen it's a blessing and works well with the pure arcadey feel of the game.

It has up to 4 player co-op on Live, but since I didn't purchase it, I didn't give this a shot.

The game is fun though, mindless as it always was, and fast paced. I chuckled when I heard the first Kamikaze - RRRRAAAAAHHHH!!!! Great to hear the good ol' sounds come back.

If you liked Serious Sam back in the day, you'll like this. I'm not sure I want to drop 1200 points on the thing, since it is so one-dimensional, but my good friend who I put in a ton of co-op hours with back on the day on this game (and it's follow-ups) wants to give it a whirl...so if he does...then I'm in.

just played the demo a bit. The "hitbox" isn't graphical like on the old one.
Also it doesn't have lives, you die, you go back to where you last saved.
Y is save, its all a bit confusing at first but once you get used to it you never have to take your hands off the joy sticks while in combat.

Having been playing manily MW2 it lacks the intenisty of those fire fights it always felt like I had the wrong gun for the current enemies/situtation (sam)

Played the 360 demo, pc version is much better regarding the hit detection and not nearly as much in the auto aim department. Obviously graphics are much better on the pc but the 360 holds up ok. Bottom line is it's still dang fun :D.

Were you refering to the old game or current one?

I was referring to the new one. Back in the day I remember being really amazed by the draw distance - that was one of the things the Serious Sam engine allowed - and I remember thinking how cool it was to look at an expansive desert, or a massive courtyard, compared to the tight quarters I was used to on games like Doom, UT, Hexen, etc.

But now, with games like Oblivion, Fallout, Flashpoint, GoW, etc., where there is so much going on (trees, grass, animals, buildings, vehicles) all within the draw distance, the Serious Sam engine just looks dated. Many of the larger areas in Serious Sam are pretty much one big texture on the ground that stretches for quite some way with only a few palm trees to break it up. Of course, there are some levels that do have a good amount of stuff going on, but if you play the demo and are thinking "holy crow - this looks boring!!!" have no fear, it looks nicer as new levels are introduced.

Not that it's bad or effects the gameplay at all, it's just noticable. Here's an example of what I mean...

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/screenshots/1132/med_SSHD_Gameplay_2.jpg

not sure i like the auto-aim + hit box thing you mentioned. can you play this with 2 or more players on the same xbox?

I'm getting more used to it and just counting it in as part of the ridiculous arcade twitch-shooter Serious Sam is. This game isn't really about pure aiming skill, it's more about playing with your friends and laughing as you circle-strafe and bunny-hop like crazy while avoiding about 50 on-screen enemies. :)

I don't see a way to have 2 or more people on an Xbox, the only co-op settings I see in game are for online parties.

I bought this and played some online co-op with one other person and it was a heck of a lot of fun. I didn't notice any lag at all. Next weekend I'll try to get a co-op session with 3 other people.

And the demo doesn't do it justice. Most of the other levels are a lot more interesting. But you still have to play it for what it is, an action-packed shoot-em-up, and not treat it as if it's trying to be one of those more strategic shooters like the Call of Duty series.

Nope, not a bust, it's fun for what it is, a frantic, crazy, retro shooter. I went through a few levels with my friend co-op, something that we did 10 years ago on our PC's when we roomed together.

The graphics are updated, the controls smooth, the auto-aim there but not offensive in any way. The audio is good - although it's the original audio samples.

If you want to play some brainless crazy shooting with 100 enemies on screen at the same time, this is for you. It has some very basic "puzzles" (really just finding secrets), but it's mostly run-n-gun. If you played and liked Painkiller, this game is very similar.

Serious Sam is what it is. One of the best co-op games you'll ever play. My friends and I crammed in 5 laptops into our tiny dorm room and seriously, it was the best experience. 5 of us against the overwhelming massive horde of baddies.

Another group of friends and I crammed a bunch of desktops into a room and did the same thing. Never got old.

As a single player, it's a good game. Not spectacular. You end up circle strafing backwards a lot of times because of the way the baddies come at you.

I haven't tried the new 360 version yet (am waiting for a sale). But I don't know how to replicate the LAN feel of a bunch of friends in the same room. i'm not a big fan of split screen gaming (i want my own screen!). and as nice as online gaming is, i prefer my friends in the same room.

and serious sam is meant for KBM. no autoaiming/wide hit zones you find in console FPS games.

does anyone know if they fixed the scoring? i remember the guy that got in the last shot for the huge bosses got the massive points, not scoring by who does what share of damage. so n00bs could get wrecked all over the place and still throw in a few shots when the boss was near death and get the most points when others did far more damage to the beast.

Like you I used to play this on my PC with my buddy, who sat at his PC near me. It was a ton of fun, and this game does do a pretty good job at replicating that feeling as best it can. I've only played this co-op with my same buddy, but I'm in CA and he's in MA, and we still had a ton of fun.

I don't know about the points issue - in all my time playing the previous versions I never thought much about the score, I was just focused on trying to finish the game!
