View Full Version : YOLD fix. A serious one!
MaxDam77 06-25-09, 04:58 PM Ok, my PS3 had the YOLD syptom in more than 2 or 3 ocasion and my PS3 is still alive. I have nothing to lose since my warranty ran off so I'm about to try Gilksy's method. Why you ask me? because when I put my nose near the PS3, it smell like something is burning inside.
There is a tutorial in pdf that can be found at that site: http://www.haxnetwork.net/page/3
You have to register first in order to get it but there is a 6 part video found on youtube.com, imo ,the most legit one and according to the forum and comments at youtube, it works.
I watched closely and with all attention the videos and I was amazed by it.
I haven't seing any post like this so I thought I should share it: here is the link to all 6 parts at youtube:

Sundull 06-25-09, 05:03 PM I tried it, but my PS3 still does not work. So, I don't know. I hope it works for you.

I'll let you know. I need to get a heat gun first.
257Tony 06-25-09, 05:08 PM Looks like its the same thing you do for a 360. There are a few shops around that can actually replace the solder with some good ole fashioned leaded stuff, that seems to be the best fix IMO.
saiga6360 06-25-09, 05:13 PM Not sure if I have YLOD but my PS3 won't start up. When I press eject and turn on the back power switch, it makes a loud noise like the fan going into overdrive for a several seconds and then nothing.

That sounds more like the fan test! Be carerful to not over do it!
saiga6360 06-25-09, 05:20 PM The issue started happening in the middle of a game and this was the only way I could eject the disc. I only did it a couple of times though then I gave up.
Ive done it twice now, and both times has came back to life! Dont know how many more times it can take though. Make sure to get some Artic-Silver 5, as the compound, find it at radioshack for like $10
TyrantII 06-25-09, 07:51 PM MaxDam77, I wouldn't recommend this unless you PS3 has the YLOD. If it's still running, leave it alone until you need to do it.
REeflowing it also typically is only a temp fix for a few months. They also might not replace it for the $150 service charge if you tamper with it more then just opening it up.
saiga6360 06-25-09, 07:58 PM Yeah, I wouldn't do it unless there's no other option. Fortunately for me, it looks like my credit card extends the warranty and I can get them to pay the repair fee. It is something at least, when all hope is lost.
DarrellG 06-25-09, 08:14 PM There is actually stuff now that's better than Arctic Silver 5. It's made from diamonds and leaves no residue behind. I forget the name but I think you can get it from Newegg.
Just pay 150 bucks and get it fix legit

Glad to here you found someone to go with you. By the way how much did you pay?

I'm not sure if I mentioned it before, but I live overseas, in the caribbean. More precicely: Dominican Republic. When I first got my YOLD, I contacted sony but for not being located in the US or other listed countries, I can't get service eventhough I have a P.O. Box located in Miami.
Dominican Republic is in the "coming soon" list btw.
So getting Sony to to fix my PS3 is out of the question unfortunatly.
I guess I sounded desperate. But not having your PS3 for at least a day or two,....It's incredible but no other console gave the same effect, I have to turn it on everyday, for a movie, an online game of KZ2, COD4 or Fifa 09, check for updates,....
I will take your advice TyrantII, I will not perform this fix, because it is still running so far. But in a way, I'm glad I've found it because I know that soon or later, the YOLD will come again and, ...I will have too...
Thanks again to you and all the others.

I think we just found out why you might have heat issues :)
Not so lucky on the PS3, but lucky bastard on the weather. Today is finally nice in Boston, but it was cloudy/rainy here for the past 10 days strait.

Lol, I have a HUGE fan over the living room. And today is really hot,..like most of the days. But I miss the snow and skiing. I haven't got back in North America for more than 10 years. The irony! :D
What town in DR are you in? I'm from Valverde Mao but live in NYC.

Puerto Plata! :)
Nice little town.
DarrellG 06-26-09, 12:27 PM Apparently, Newegg does not carry the diamond thermal compound.
