Hey guys is it just me or is it that some standard DVDs like Doomsday and The International actually looked sharper and more film-like than something like Alvin & The Chipmunks on blu ray...and not by a little either.
Edit: Btw I should add that I am in no way advising anyone to watch those 2 sucky films. Doomsday was just lame and bad, the International was boring and way too complicated for the average movie goer. You know, I wonder if maybe the producers of these lame ducks say to themselves: "maybe if we pull out all the stops and make the video and audio top notch some lucky suckers will buy our dvds" .

So... you're comparing apples to oranges? Not all movies look great.
As far as Doomsday goes... the Blu-ray release for that disc is amazing and the DVD looks like dog **** in comparison.

An upconvert cannot create detail which isn't there and at the end of the day it's still upconverting lower resolution.
Was Alvin and the Chipmunks CGI ? I think some films will always look more film like regardless of format they get released on.
I suppose it's a question of how they were filmed, film stock used, camera's used, lighting used for certain scenes, how they were transferred to the home formats, how they were edited, processing used or not used, the look the makers were going for, etc etc.
Too many variables though to just compare one film to another.
I mean on DVD the sharpness may just be edge enhancement and what looks like film grain may just be background noise.

Hmmm.. I don't understand. Alvin and the Chipmunks is a very good looking blu-ray. It's not as nice as Doomsday on blu, but I'm pretty confident that it looks better than any DVD as far as resolution.

I guess everyone has an opinion.
