View Full Version : 768p Display - Do I set the PS3 to 720p or 1080p?
This question is for playing games, not Blu Ray discs.
I can't seem to find a definitive answer to this question no matter where I look. I'm using a 32" 720p (768 really) Samsung LN32B460 that I just recently purchased. I'm not sure if I should uncheck 1080i and 1080p and just go with 720p or should I leave all the boxes checked including 1080i and 1080p, which is what the PS3 does when I put the Video Output Settings on Auto? I would GREATLY appreciate any advise here, because it seems to be an endless debate.
MaxDam77 06-26-09, 08:54 PM I don't think your set does 1080p. Do it manually and check 480p and 720p only. Keep everything progressive.
Uncheck 1080i. Some games will upscale to 1080i if you check it, but from my experience, at 1080i, fifa09 to set an example will look a little blurry or washed out. at 720p, it looked sharp.

Well, when I let the PS3 choose the Video Output automatically it selects all the boxes, including 1080p. I figured that means that it would just downscale the 1080p signal?
Here is the set, just for reference:

funsocaltiger 06-26-09, 09:03 PM I cant seem to find the input info on this set online anywhere. You could try checking JUST 1080p to see if that resolution works. If it does, that would probably be the preferrable input since either way your TV has to rescale.

Yep, just 1080p alone works.
This was my thought as well, but forcing 720p games to be upscaled to 1080p then downscaled by the TV back to 768p seems like a lot of added scaling compared to just letting the TV upscale the 720p games to 768p. Although, I noticed so far that the text and pictures in the PS3 menus look much crisper when I allow all boxes to be checked in comparison to just checking 720p.
Definitely use 1080p. I have a 788p Sony RPTV and I send 1080p from my PS3 to it and it does look and work better than 720p. 768/788 are derivatives of 720p, but they are slightly higher rez.
Correction. I check both resolutions as well. I was thinking of something else. :o
Anyway, most PS3 games on BD are 720p or some are less, so you want to have both resolutions checked for some games that are 1080 and for BD's.
PvtChurch 06-27-09, 12:49 AM 720p. There are very few games that render in 1080p on the PS3, most that do are either PSN games with fairly simple graphics, games that otherwise look like trash, and games that run at a terrible framerate and aren't worth your time. Some games can be forced to upscale to 1080p but your image is not going to look better by forcing it to upscale to 1080p then downscaling it to 768p as opposed to just upscaling it to 768p. Also the former will introduce more input lag.
Chief Ediri 06-27-09, 05:17 AM I been having the same issue.
confidenceman 06-27-09, 07:08 AM You're going to get a whole slew of different answers to this question. It depends on how new your display is, the quality of its scaler, how it deals with overscan, the native resolution of the image content, etc.
I also have a 768p set for my PS3. In my case, downscaling leads to a crisper picture, but increases motion blur. If you get a lot of image "haloing," you may want to force 1080i/p. In my case, rather than keep switching the output resolution, I just leave it with everything (720, 1080) selected. It means I don't always get the sharpest possible picture, but it also means I don't have to think about it.
Best advice: try forcing both resolutions. Choose which you prefer. If you can't tell the difference, then it doesn't matter. :D

If a game upscales from 960x1080 to 1080P you're losing resolution. If it upscales from 1280/1440x1080 you're probably losing more FPS than 127488 pixels are worth. If its using software upscaling it will probably be about the same.
dogdoctor 06-27-09, 01:00 PM Best advice: try forcing both resolutions. Choose which you prefer. If you can't tell the difference, then it doesn't matter. :DExactly. There will be mathamatical equations thrown at you for which is better. Bottom line, let your eyes do the choosing. I had an '04 768p set that quite frankly, 1080i just looked better (esp. from the Satellite sources). So I just did as confidenceman stated. Just checked 720 and 1080i (no 1080p support on my set). Then all games would run at 720 and all BD would run at 1080i. Best of both worlds for me. But as a side note...correct me if I'm wrong, but you wouln't really ever want to just force 1080i. Because if some games don't support 1080i and you don't have 720p checked you might wind up watching it as 480p.
As far as Blu Rays go, you would ABSOLUTELY want it set to 1080p. No questions asked. With games the only issue is the games that will upscale to 1080p first, as people said. I've kept my set to 1080p ever since I got my 768p plasma, but I might look up certain games I play to see if they upscale from 720p to 1080p and will switch the settings when I play them.
confidenceman 06-27-09, 02:33 PM The other thing to consider is that many games are not 720p native (many are less). So outputting them at 720p or 1080p doesn't matter since the PS3's scaling them regardless (and then your display is scaling them yet again to 768p).
Again, just trust your eyes. Just like I said above, you can see there are lots of different opinions on the issue. ;)
Thanks for all the replies. I decided to just leave all options checked, and let the PS3 decide which resolution to use to output each game. This way I don't have to worry about it, like confidenceman said. Also, I can't tell any noticeable differences between forcing some games to output at 1080i/p versus just letting the PS3 output them at 720p, so I'm not going to worry about it. Thanks for all the help though.
