This is a list of Sony CRT's capable of High Definition display in no particular order. Some have hdmi, some dvi, and some just component connections. Not necessarily a definitive list. The "KD" indicates digital tuner. No non American models listed. If you have any exceptions or additions please note with a link. I am not making any comment on the quality or lack there of on any of these models. Simply trying to provide a list of Sony HD crt's for the interested persons. Just a note, the KW-34HD1 retailed for $8999 in 2000.

Thanks for the update. Many of these sets are selling on craigslist for ridiculously low prices now as people feel they must have lcd or plasma. If you buy a nice Sony hd crt for one or two hundred dollars and it has a problem in a year or two, it's no big deal to the pocketbook.

I have the 27 420 with HDMI for 4:3 gaming
The 34 960 for movies and gaming
and a 24 GDM FW900 monitor for computing and gaming. :D
I think I have all the reference CRT's in every size if one is hiding out there I will find you. :)

are all these HD tv's non HD digital tuner ??? any twin digital tuners????
ie digital ''ready'' but need a separate tuner to get OTA digital
or do any CRT's have built in tuners

and are only the XBR's real 9x16 tubes

opps just reread the opening post
so only the 34'' XBR's are digital tuners

No.

My 30XS955 has QAM and ATSC tuners built in. As does the 34 and 36" (4:3)

As do the 34XBR960 & 960N. I think these had PiP too. The 970 had the lesser tube but probably kept the tuners - can't remember.

Yeah, the 34XBR960 had the dual tuner PiP. There's 2 coax jacks on the back for the tuners, one for analog and one for digital. The 970 did away with the analog jack and second tuner.

FWIW, I don't believe the 970 was a true XBR. It didn't have the Super Fine Pitch tube, it lacked the nicer audio system of the XBRs (no "sub"). It was a downgrade from the 960.

Wasn't the XS line basically an XBR minus the "sub"?

That's odd. Your profile doesn't list your location, but the better 40XBR800 is available on Craigslist for $200 in Cali and $225 in Georgia. If you're trying to save money by looking for the 40XBR700 instead, stop.

which is more preferable the 40XBR800 or 700 (and why?)
are these in 720p/ 1080i or 480p?
are they 16:9 screens or 4:3?

are CRT HDTVs made anymore? what is the biggest size?

are CRT Hdtvs better blacks and clearer pics than flat panels? only limitation is the size , bulk and weight, correct?

-- sorry about so many questions, just trying to learn..:)

1. I have read 40xbr800 is the better of the two.
2. 1080i
3. 4:3
4. No. The Sony 40 inch was the biggest hd crt ever made.
5. Many people still believe the hd crt is superior to any lcd or plasma, others will call people fools for saying that. Weight is the big problem and only used ones out there. Trust your own eyes, not what other people or brochures say.

Yup, weight is the biggest concern. Having carried a 30 kg IBM P275 21" monitor (Trinitron tube) up the stairs, as my elevator doesn't stop at the 1st floor, i definitely know what i'm saying.

Otherwise, it blows any flat panel away. Colors and black level are the two magic parameters. Imo they are also the most important, but some people may disagree. Well, happy viewing of your 6-bit panels then. :D

I currently have a Sony KD-34XBR960N. I'm thinking of upgrading (mainly due to wanting a bigger screen), but am having a tough time deciding what type of plasma would be a good replacement.

I'm looking at the Panasonic 58" V series and Pioneer 50" (whatever I can find as Pioneer tv's are going away).

Any suggestions on the two? I know Pioneer has better blacks and contrasts, however it seems Panasonic is making some good strides especially on the V series?

thanks!

^^That review is a year old and he never fixed the cut-off conclusion text?

But yeah, that makes me want a 960 of my own, or at least to finally get my 36XS955 calibrated...
