View Full Version : PlayOn Media Server For $19.99 - Hulu Disabled From PS3 Browser
DarrellG 06-29-09, 11:28 AM I haven't tested the browser with Hulu in a while since I have PlayOn but according to this article, it's been disabled with the FW update.

PlayOn is awesome, I use it every day. I actually subscribed to Netflix just because of PlayOn. For $19.99 it's a steal. People have also added their own plugins which have made it even better. The NFL plugin is great for me since Cablevision doesn't have the NFL Network.

mproper 06-29-09, 11:32 AM I love PlayOn (strictly for Hulu and Youtube....I use NF through my 360).
It was $29.99 at one point when I bought), but they've raised it to $39.99. Is that what you meant, cause I don't think it's ever been $19.99
Still a steal, IMO.
YoMaMa84 06-29-09, 11:47 AM Cool, I'll buy this tonight when I get home from work. Since i can't stream Hulu with Tversity.

There's a 2 week trial to try it out, before you buy. Just FYI.

mpkelley20 06-29-09, 02:54 PM Wow! I've been using this since the early beta tests and purchased it once it went live. Never knew about the plugins to access other content. Just having Netflix and Hulu content for me was the big seller. But with all this other content, I may have to rethink my cable subscription! Thanks for posting this.
_Avarice_ 06-29-09, 03:01 PM To what content do the NFL plugins give you access?
DarrellG 06-29-09, 03:28 PM To what content do the NFL plugins give you access?
Well it's hard to tell since it's not football season but I was pleasantly surprised at how much content they had. I was able to watch all the mini-camp interviews and the old games that were shown on NFL Network.
It looks like it's a really nice amount of content.
_Avarice_ 06-29-09, 03:31 PM I'll have to check that out! What's the easiest way to find user-created plugins?
So I would download this onto my PS3 thru its web browser? I tend to not download anything onto my PS3, usually just the PSN store, updates, or transfering files from my Mac with a thumb drive for music and movies. For some reason I'm worrisome (warrented or not?) about downloading from the internet onto the PS3. I'd hate to get a virus and lose 200 gigs worth of stuff as well as all the time and money I've put into that thing.

No, this software installs to a PC (http://www.themediamall.com/playon#get-started) and streams from the PC to your PS3.
Zookster 06-29-09, 05:34 PM For $20 bucks PlayOn is a no-brainer. It was worth it to me at $30.
But as mproper mentioned, give it a thorough test during the trail before buying to make sure it will work with your system. (Their forums and tech support are good resources for troubleshooting glithces.) With that said, the biggest issue I have with PlayOn is either your PC or PS3 have to be wired to the network router, and they are unable to offer HD content.
confidenceman 06-29-09, 05:43 PM Excellent. That price is more like it! I'll do the trial tonight and tomorrow and buy before the June 30 expiration for the coupon if I it works well. Thanks for the heads up. :D
TedSeattle 06-29-09, 06:32 PM Just tried it. I'm able to watch clips from CBS, but every single thing I've tried on Hulu has given me a "corrupted data" error.
(My PS3 and PC are both wired to the router.)

Funny since Hulu is owned by NBC/GE!!
vttait23 06-29-09, 09:31 PM My PS3 is located in my basement (router is upstairs). The signal strength is only around 50% and PlayOn really struggles when trying to play video (buffers all the time). For those out there with good internet connection, does PlayOn content usually look better than standard defintion televion? Do you have problems with playback (buffering?) Also, is PlayOn a one time fee or a yearly renewal? TIA
Conspiracy* 06-29-09, 10:38 PM If I have to stream from a PC Im not interested. I only have laptops and I have them to sleep. Hulu doesnt play anymore? I updated yesterday and I watched hulu last night.
TedSeattle 06-30-09, 03:07 AM PlayOn still supports Hulu. I got a reply from their support team, and after fixing my Adobe Flash installation on my PC, I can now view Hulu videos via my PS3. So, it seems to work as advertised.
TyrantII 06-30-09, 08:44 AM hmmm, where would one go to see plugin support? Do they support Comedy Central? Is support pretty wide?

New Plugins are being developed every week it seems.
You need to register for the forums to download them.

confidenceman 06-30-09, 10:44 AM Set this up last night. Brilliant. I can't believe I've waited this long!
I haven't had cable for well over a decade (can't stand the idea of paying for 2 decent channels and 100+ channels of garbage). But this is a fantastic alternative. I've always dreamed of being able to choose which channels I want. Sony needs to jump on this kind of tech and get it standard on their system ASAP! Does away with the need for a browser altogether. Just get some sort of video streaming compiler like this, and there's no need for anything else. If MS can do it with Netflix, then why not?
Plugins were ridiculously easy to install and get running (though I did need to restart my PC to get them to stream properly to my PS3). I've gotten a few "corrupted data" messages so far, but for the most part everything works great. Also, my PC is so old at this point that the streamed videos are playing better on my PS3 than on my PC.
Seeing how active the plugin community is, I can't wait to see what else comes down the pipeline. :D
Does this only work with PC's? Am I outta luck since I've got a Mac Powerbook?
Bazylik 06-30-09, 01:31 PM is it annual subscription or one time fee? Also, how many TV channels does it support out of the box. I see CBS, but what about ABC, NBC and the rest of basic national channels support?
Degenerazn 06-30-09, 01:38 PM One time fee.

I never knew about plug ins, thanks OP, I'll have to try it out when I get home.
Protopet 06-30-09, 02:01 PM http://news.spong.com/article/18406/Microsofts_New_Ad_Deal_Why_Hulu_Blocked_PlayStation
The movie service Hulu ceased to work with the PlayStation 3 over the weekend in the United States. Could the reason be a new partnership with Microsoft?
Revolution magazine reports that, "Microsoft will provide consumers with personalised content and advertising across all media platforms within three years, claims a senior company executive."
The executive in question is Scott Howe, corporate vice president of advertiser and publisher solutions, who told the mag that Microsoft would be using a 'decision engine' base on Bing, and that "The wheels are in motion and we've already started collapsing our ad platforms together."
We're also informed that "Last week Microsoft and Publicis Groupe struck a deal to tap into data from TV set-top boxes to targeted TV ads... The second part of the deal involves developing new digital ad formats to build on Publicis Groupe's existing initiative, called the Pool. The Pool is an alliance involving Microsoft, CBS, Hulu, Yahoo, AOL and Discovery..."
Of course the tie-in with Hulu, and its cessation on the PS3 could simply be ****-up rather than conspiracy.
Or some testing...
dogdoctor 06-30-09, 03:27 PM Can this do Netflix HD feeds? (something I'm very interested in). I'm a complete nOOb when it comes to streaming. I was pleasantly supprised when I got my PC connected to the PS3 for access to images and music via the media player.

The plugin includes an options menu that lets you toggle SD/HD. No such option for Netflix, but that might just be determined by bandwidth. Not sure.

No, it doesn't. You need a Netflix device, like the XBOX 360, Roku player or one of the Blu-Ray players that supports Netflix HD streaming.
Robert Clark 06-30-09, 03:49 PM Thanks for the link. Playon works great and is much better than fumbling through ps3's awkward browser ...
mulder_fbi 07-01-09, 12:21 AM Thanks OP. I picked up 2 licenses (quicker than having my dad figure out paypal. :-P )
TheDaywalker 07-01-09, 03:03 AM I got mine!
Thanks for the info!
haysoos123 07-02-09, 06:32 PM Does this only work with PC's? Am I outta luck since I've got a Mac Powerbook?
I run this through VMware with Windows XP installed on my Mac Pro, but if you don't have an intel Mac, I think you're out of luck. I think they say they're working on a native Mac version, but they have no idea when it would be out.
Conspiracy* 07-03-09, 06:22 PM Ok...I missed the boat on playon. But my hulu still works via the browser. Why do I keep seeing that its been disabled?

Maybe you didn't update your FW to 2.80? It wasn't a required FW update.
markj_canada 07-23-09, 07:33 PM im glad i got in on this software for $20...it works pretty good except for a hulu outage for a week or so...
ive been trying out lots of the plugins and there is now a spike tv one but doesnt support full episodes yet...has anyone tried the nba plugin? i cant seem to get that one to work...not sure why...
DarrellG 07-23-09, 09:22 PM No, I haven't tried the NBA one yet, but the NFL one works beautifully.
TheDaywalker 07-25-09, 12:16 PM argh....lots
of corrupted data stuff.
DarrellG 07-25-09, 12:36 PM Try stopping and restarting PlayOn. That helps sometimes.
Also, make sure you have the latest version.
I thought tversity pro has hulu too?

thanks..will try that!
confidenceman 07-26-09, 08:49 PM argh....lots
of corrupted data stuff.I usually only get those if the sites themselves have bad video links. Quite a few of the AdultSwim ones for example. Otherwise, the reliability and speed of the videos has been impressive.
MIAaron 07-27-09, 12:58 PM Is there a way to make PlayOn remember your system benchmarks? Currently PlayOn rates the system on every startup. My anti-virus has startup scans and I only get a "high" rated cpu. If I run it again after the AV scan, it rates the cpu "max". I wouldn't car much, but something about the auto-detected video quality puts meaning into these ratings. I get hiccups every 10-15min with it on 'high', but none when it is rated at 'max'.
Zookster 07-27-09, 01:57 PM I have an Intel Core 2 T5600 processor in my laptop, which PlayOn rates as "High." What would I need for PlayOn to rate it as "Max"? I hit the retest button and it still comes up "High." My bandwidth, on the other hand, does come up "Max" and I have 2 GB of RAM (running XP).
Also, if I set Video Performance to Max (which I haven't yet), should I get better results if I uncheck "Always Process Entire Video"?
MIAaron 07-27-09, 03:42 PM I don't know what you need for everything to be rated as 'max', but I'm using a desktop with an old AMD 4400+(939), 2600xt, 2gb low latency ram w/ xp.
Conspiracy* 07-27-09, 03:57 PM I let my trial expire because it only showed up to a certain episode of Naruto via Hulu. I know hulu has EVERY episode of the original run series but PlayOn only showed up to Ep 113 or so. Anyone else experience this with other shows? Inuyasha does the same only 40 eps showing when Hulu has them all. Can someone confirm?
Do you have to have a netflix acct to watch movies on PlayOn? I didnt think u needed to because it says free netflix but when I try to go to it it says to enter my log in info...?
MIAaron 07-28-09, 09:31 AM You have to have a netflix subscription. You just enter your login ID and password. Either pay $10/month or find a friend that would trust you with their ID & password.

This is because PlayOn gets the episode list from Hulu's API, which only provides the first 40 eps (I believe). It's a problem with Hulu. Well, not really a problem, but just their system only providing the first X number of eps in their API, so there's no way for PlayOn to grab the entire list.
Easy workaround is just to add the episodes to your Hulu user queue, and then pull that up. Of course, Hulu also only provides the first 20 or 40 (I forget) items in your queue in their feed, so you have to manage it appropriately or eps will "drop off" the bottom of PlayOn's list.

Correct. It's free with a Netflix subscription (i.e. it's not pay-per-view or anything). Of course, I don't condone using another's user id/password, just for the whole 'morality' thing. You also do not get access to Netflix's HD titles with PlayOn.
DarrellG 07-28-09, 10:51 AM I always leave mine on "auto" and I have a 2.5 GHZ Dual Core and 4 GB of RAM.
