Is there even one on the market yet that is using the Realtek chip? Unless there is, that's not a question that can be answered.

ACRyan Playon!HD.

(The Xtreamer will also be on the market later this week.)

From what I've heard, the Sigma chips traditionally have been higher quality while the Realtek chips have been faster. The new generation of Realtek chips that the PlayOn! HD and Xtreamer use have been said to be really good, though.

What is the general consensus of the ACRyan? Have there been any actual unbiased comparisons reported? As in not someone that was mad because their WD was never a DVD player, and went out and bought the ACRyan and "ZOMG, teh picturez are teh b3tter than teh WDz!!1!!"

User reviews of the Xtreamer should be just days away and will definitely be found in the Xtreamer - Discussion, Reviews, Information Thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1155845) as soon as they are out.

Yup lets hope they are good, some people are acting like this thing is the second coming. IMO the gui is pretty weak. But thats second to how it performs.

If the Xtreamer performance and functionality lives up to the marketing hype, it will be.

But where is the hype coming from?? WDTV haters on this site or is this company really pushing this product out there somewhere??

The Hype began here in Europe because, here in Europe, the Xtreamer has the same price than WD TV... but it brings Lan, DTS Downmix, possibility of internal disk, etc! If it does what they say it does, then in Europe, unfortunately the WD TV will be way behind...

I mean have you really heard about it outside of thie forum and maybe some euro one like it?? I have a hard time believing it has some crazy hype going.

Popcorn has been out for a decent amount of time and it does everything the xtreamer claims to do as far as I know..

So why is there this crazy hype your claiming.

Maybe I'm missing something.

I think it is fair to say we are all anxiously waiting for pro reviews which will surely appear over the next few weeks.
The first user feedback (PlayonHD is already available) indicates the Realtek based platform is a strong performer and handles pictures a lot quicker than the existing Sigma chips.
Also price points (at least here in Europe) are for once very competitive.
I am on the fence too but waiting for the forementioned reviews before jumping.

Same here, if not for this forum, I probably never would have even heard about Xstreamer.

MAybe it's just me, but I'd rather have better than quicker.

Yes, it's just you. Most of us would like better AND quicker. That's what the Realtek chips are promising.

The problem is that Popcorn costs 220€ or more here in Portugal... Xtreamer will be at 119€ with Wireless dongle until 1 july... so, just do the math and you will find the Hype! :D

might turn out be a turd, but people are excited, and if it does everything its meant to do then its great value.

Interface videos seem faster than when i had a popcorn a110. And flash support (if they can add on2 vp6 codec support) would be a major plus and could see the release of lots of streaming plugins.

Just quicker, as OPPOSED to just better, I thought it would be obvious that quicker and better is a given, I guess "but I'd rather have better than quicker." wasn't simple enough. Where are they promising better quality on a device that isn't out yet?

That is why I wrote 'quicker' as it is about the only tangible element known so far.
Better? Remains to be determined and also depends on what functionality you would be looking for in the first place (I personally do not care about flac or dts support but others may be do).

We will not know for sure until this device is objectively tested and compared against its direct competitors ;)

Exactamundo!!! While all the shilling is humorous and all, the real test is going to be once it gets in end users hands.

Does Realtek chip supports older DV25 codec from DV camcorders and perhaps those new players will support that format ?
