View Full Version : Looking at upgrading some of my components, please assist.
My current setup:
Sony STR-DG720 Receiver
Pioneer S-HF21-LR 100W Front Speakers (http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-S-HF21-Bookshelf-Loudspeaker-System/dp/B000EBBDLK)
Polk CS10 Center Speaker
Sony SS-MSP75 Surround Speakers (came with a 5.1 kit I had)
Sony SAWMSP75 AMP (came with 5.1 kit I had)
Would like to keep the Receiver and center. Looking at what I should upgrade with the rest if anything.
Live in an apartment, watch a lot of blu-ray movies. Any suggestions? Was thinking of leaving the sub/surround, and just focusing on new fronts (probably Polk to match the center speaker).
Suggestions?
m_vanmeter 07-01-09, 12:45 PM if they will fit your room decor, Polk Monitor 50 or 60 towers would be a great addition to your setup. Excellent prices and free shipping http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=polk+monitor
50's are that much better than the 30's?
What's wrong with your existing gear? I guess, specifically, the Pioneer speakers. What are your limitations? What are your expectations with curing "upgrade-itis". :)

The rears are cheap/lacking. Was told I should try to have the C/L/R same brand for best sound. Which made me think of replacing the fronts, with polk, move pioneer to rear.

Sounds like a good plan. Look for Polks that best match your center and budget.
4xoddic 07-05-09, 03:04 PM Your Pioneer S-HF21-LR 100W Front Speakers Sensitivity --- 80 dB (100,000,000 or 100 Million times the threshold of hearing); while the
Polk CS10 Center Speaker Sensitivity --- 90 dB or (1,000,000,000 or 1 Billion times the threshold of hearing) appears to have a sound level 10 X your mains.
I would guess you're currently balancing the center with the mains by adjusting volume.
Sony SS-MSP75 Surround Speakers Sensitivity --- 85 dB
Look for L & R Main speakers with Sensitivity ~90 dB, & with woofers at least as large as your CS10s:
5.25-inch diameter bi-laminate organic fiber cone woofer
1-inch silk/polymer composite Dynamic Balance dome tweeter
Overall frequency response: 53Hz-25kHz Mains should go at least that low.
I have 5 Polk RT-7s (7.5 in woofer), but I used a Polk CS200 w/2 4.5 in woofers as the Center Channel before I got the 5th RT-7. Sensitivity was within 1 dB.
hd_newbie 07-05-09, 03:23 PM Rule of thumb is this:
1) Upgrade your room if you can if you can't
2) Upgrade your speakers
Once you upgrade your speakers, your next best investment will again be upgrading your speakers. Just make sure you feed them ample power.

Still celebrating the 4th?
m_vanmeter 07-06-09, 01:10 PM "bodean" - to your earlier question...Yes, the Polk Monitor 50's are better than the 30's and the Monitor 60's are better than the 50's. Polks numbering scheme does mean something, usually more and larger radiating speakers.
