When beginning to set contrast and brightness, what numbers should I start with? The contrast and brightness on my HD1000 projector go from -25 to +25, with "0" being right in the middle. Do I start with both set to zero? I do contrast first, then brightness, correct? Thanks.

It doesn't really matter which you start with. The process is iterative.

Even if you zero'd things out ...you'd still arrive at the correct place regardless. It just takes longer if you start from an end rather than the middle.

Thanks. My Sound and Vision cal. disc says to do contrast first, then brightness. But I didn't know what numbers to start with, because I noticed if I start with a higher number on one it makes the other one lower, and vice versa. I'll just start with 0 on both.

It is iterative. Go back and forth between them, and you'll arrive at the correct spot for both. Generally contrast adjustment is more likely to have an impact on black level(brightness setting) than the other way around, which is why it's generally lazier to do contrast first, then brightness, but there isn't any reason you can't do it the other way. Just make sure you go back and forth and make sure both are right.

On my projector or flatscreen I adjust brightness first because the setting for contrast seems not to have a dramatic influence on the setting for brightness. So I set brightness first to get the right level for black and then I adjust the right level for contrast. A couple of iterations isn't necessary, IMHO.

I think the HD1000 has no autoiris or something like that. So I think it doesn't matter if the testpattern is a combined one with bright and dark nuances or if two patterns are used, one for blacks and one for whites.

On a projector with autoiris it might be better to ckeck the level with both versions.
