I'm in the planning stages of a future 5.1 (maybe 6.1) Home Theater for my 'Great Room' (Kitchen / Family Room Combo). Originally, I was thinking of going 5.1, but now I'm kind of considering a 6.1 setup. My room is a little funky shaped, and I know the seating arrangements are not ideal. I'm hoping that with the technologies of the AVR to help calibrate and set up the soundstage, that the placement of the speakers can be a little forgiving. This is not a dedicated HT room, and the use will be 70% TV/Movies, and 30% music.

The equipment I'm considering is an Onkyo TX-SR607 for AVR, and the HSU Enthusiast 2 package for speakers (VTF-2 MK 3 Subwoofer, HB-1 MK2 Horn Bookshelfs for L/R/SS, and HC-1 MK2 Horn Center Channel).

I have attached a sketch of my room, and the places I thought of placing the speakers. The RED X's are the proposed placements for the L / R / CC / and Surrounds. The RED Z is where I would think of installing the extra speaker if I were to go 6.1. The RED Circle is where I would install the sub (on the ground, in the corner behind the sectional sofa). The GREEN hexagons are the seats that are the primary viewing seats (mine and the wifes). My wife wants to keep the speakers off the ground, so I compromised to mount them with some Omnimount 30.0 CA mounts from the ceiling, pointed in the direction of the primary seats. I will be utilizing 12AWG speaker wire.

I guess my question is will this be a suitable installation for this room and setup? If not, where would you move the speakers to be installed? The seating cannot move, so I guess the only thing that can really change is the speakers and their respective distances.

Please let me know your thoughts and recommendations...

If you could, I'd go for a symmetrical setup. Unfortunately with your layout, that means the sofa acting as a big separator between the kitchen and great room, TV and front speakers along the 19' 5 3/4" wall.

I agree... go for the symmetry... that being said, I have a non-symmetrical setup, and it works well enough, but where I am there's no choice for now, to go symmetrical the sofa would be half on and half off a platform...
Another reason to not do what you're thinking is to not have the tv mounted above the fireplace... besides any arguments as to the longevity of the tv, that high up is usually too high for comfortable viewing for a full length feature and leads to neck strain, like sitting in the first row of a movie theater...

I guess I should of said that the 'fireplace' is a gas one, and is more of an aesthetics fireplace that doesn't put out much heat, mostly just for show. The TV is already mounted and has been for over 2 years. It may be a little high for viewing, but I like being able to recline my seats and relax, kind of like laying in bed watching TV. So the TV and room setup won't be changing places. I know it's not ideal, but moving the couch would cut off the bar/counter and I currently have bar stools where the couch would go; plus I like the open 'one giant' room feel, I don't want two separate rooms in one. If this were a dedicated HT room, then that would be a definite option.

With that said, are the proposed speaker locations adequate?

Well then, as stated, "the proposed speaker locations" are less than ideal... Whether or not they're "adequate" becomes a matter of does it sound good enough to you to warrant the tradeoffs.
