View Full Version : i want a FAST 42" plasma for hardcore gaming
that's right, anything above 32"-37" is going to murder my wallet and my eyes since my living room has very limited space, primary use will be gaming ,wii titles 480i 4:3 / 480p 16:9 through component cables and xbox360/ps3 at 720p through hdmi, is there a plasma at these dimensions that does really fast scaling ? more than 2 frames behind on 480i and 720p is unacceptable fto me, 30ms max i kinda good as long as it is CONSISTENT, no fluctiations between 10-30ms, i play some smash brothers brawl and i want the controls to feel as close to my old blurry crt as possible.
I've done a fair amount of searching through a lot of threads here but the only good results i found were in 42"-60" range, can anyone show me any input lag tests performed on 37" or smaller plasma sets ?
tbird8450 07-04-09, 09:25 AM Does anyone even make plasmas under 42" anymore?
schroedk 07-04-09, 09:25 AM I could be mistaken, but I don't believe that there are any plasmas <42" produced anymore. Anything below that will be LCD.
Ok recommend me a 42" plasma then with really low input lag even at 480i through component cables (btw do the cables still affect latency if the signal is 480i ? composite and rgb scart should be as fast as component right ? ) that's still in production so i won't have any real problems finding it
c'mon guys it's mid 2009, there HAS to be something just as fast as this one or even better ( http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=13669373&postcount=30 panasonic 42PZ700U )

mkoesel 07-04-09, 11:37 AM If you really, really want a 37" check forum sponsor Visual Apex for the TH-37PR9U hospitality (hotel) display. However, it is not a very good value (costs as much as a 42") and you also have to buy input boards separately if you want more than the single VGA/Component input it comes with.
Even if you go 42" or bigger, I'd still check out all the Panasonic commercial plasma monitors that Visual Apex sells. They are notable for their ability to easily adjust overscan which comes in handy for games and game consoles.

excellent ! any review that provides actual numbers and comparisons ? hdtvtest.co.uk was not very helpfull " Objective measurements placed input lag with [Game Mode] activated at up to 21ms faster than our resident Samsung F96 LED-backlit LCD TV. Even if [Game Mode] was not engaged, the TX-P42G10 was on par with the F96 regardless of whether [Intelligent Frame Creation] was on or off. "
what about sony W4000 ? hdtvtest.co.uk claims that panasonic vierra 2008 PZ series are pretty much lag free as well, does this apply even at 480i or only when feeding with 720p through hdmi ? btw what's more difficult for a scaler to process quickly on a 1920*1080 screen ? 720p or 1080i ?
The Panny S1 and G10's are definitely the best Quality:Speed 42" PDP's you're going to find. Even though I have seen no real measurements of their contemporary plasmas, I would feel pretty confident in saying you definitely want to avoid the Samsungs. Their reputation precedes them, and I'm sure you're probably aware of their history if speed is something you've researched. There is a guy on the FPJ forum that measured an unnamed Samsung plasma (unsure of the model or year) at almost 80ms, and said it was even worse than their already awful LCD's (which are in the 60's by his measurements). I know the LG LH30 (LCD) is supposedly very fast, but I'm not sure if that translates into their PDP's as well (or if they even make a 42"). Even if it did, I doubt it'd be faster than the Panasonics--probably about the same. Picture quality on the LG's is really no where near the Panasonic's.
There's about a 300 euro price difference in my country between P42S1 and P42G10, P42V10 is even more expensive ( 1600 euros *gulp !! ) , P42G10 costs 1050 euros and P42S1 costs 750, P42S1 runs at 100hz but P42G10 does not :S , afaik 100hz proscessing is useless for gaming and adds even more lag, is there a way to turn it off in the P42S1 ?
discopaul 07-04-09, 04:02 PM Well, LG, Panasonic, and Samsung make 42" plasmas that are plenty fast. You'll have no problem with any of these brands with respect to speed for game playing.
FWIW I ran the lag calibration test of Guitar Hero Metallica on my Panasonic V10. I ran it 5 times and the video lag was 0ms each time. This same test yields around 22ms lag on my old DLP.
There was some audio lag in some of the runs (sometimes 0ms, sometimes 30ms), but this should be fixed when I hook up my receiver.
Test was run using Xbox 360 at 1080p connected directly to the TV via HDMI. I haven't tried lower resolutions, but I think the 360 will be a better/faster scaler than the Panasonic.
