Didn't see an existing thread on season five, and I wanted somewhere to post the first pictures I've seen of the fancy (and expensive) "Dharma Initiation" collector's edition version:

Too bad I no longer own a VCR, lol.

My parents and my sister have one... but I wouldn't go through the trouble :p. I used to be a sucker for collector's sets, but... these days I prefer just a uniform looking collection, too much over-the-top packaging as it is.

After the season three release, they changed the slipcover design. So my collection won't match anyway--I might get the fancy one.

After watching seasons 1 - 4 over the past week and a half, I'm ready for season 5. I'll probably skip the super expensive deluxe Dharma Initiative edition; I got rid of my vcr many years ago. At least it is an interesting looking set that caters to the fans, but I'd prefer a set that will line up nicely with my season 1-4 BDs.

Nice set... but not for me.

Nice for the collectors, I guess. I'll stick with the standard release.

You watched 80 hours of a TV show over 10 days? Wow.

That is pretty intense... but the show is pretty awesome. I thought I was keeping a good pace and Season 1 took me... about a week.

Yes. I took a week of vacation, and I couldn't hit the stop button. I'm just slightly paranoid about the "others" right now. I don't think I've ever power-marathoned through any other series at the same pace.

Its impossible to push the stop button once you start this phenomenal show.. I can relate. Funny release by the LOST crew, good stuff.

...and I thought I was watching too much LOST. ;) My wife and I just started with Season 1 about two weeks ago and we are only on disc 5 of season 2.

The Season 5 collectors edition looks nice, but I'll probably stick to the stripped down version.

In the last two or three weeks I've watched the first two seasons already with friends. I'm just about to start the third season tonight... I can't wait to get to the fourth season where I'll be seeing stuff that's actually new to me.

I had to stop watching the show as it broadcast - it just got too frustrating that way.

I have a DVHS so I still have a VCR. Meh, haven't hooked it up in over a year. The only reason I'd hook it up is to watch Two Towers EE and all the Star Wars movies straight through. I have little interest in this set.

now has anyone checked if that is even a real vhs tape? or some kind of box?

After the season 5 finale, there are so many things in the early seasons that can be reinterpreted, it's made the early seasons more interesting.

I guess what he means is just watching only 1 EP a week is kinda stupid. at least for me. feels just more coherent to me watching it all together, in only few days.

I'm really looking forward to S5 release tomorrow, I might have to re-watch it before Season 6 starts up. Season 6 can't come soon enough for my liking though :). I signed up for HD cable just for Lost (although there are 3-4 other shows I follow and we watch a lot of hockey!). I'll only be getting the $60 regular edition, not the $100 Dharma edition though. May as well try and keep the cases looking the same (despite the black sheep Season 3).

I'm normally a sucker for collector's sets, but not this one. Not a fan of the whole discs-in-sleeves things, I like plastic hubs for easy accessibility. And the biggest extra is a VHS tape - well oops, I don't have a VHS player around anymore (maybe somewhere in the basement?) so crap-load of good that does me. I'm sure anything interesting from the VHS tape will end up online eventually.

Best Buy is advertising an exclusive disc with their version, so perhaps that's a DVD-version of this VHS tape? I'll probably just get that.

This one is a must buy for me.. I've watched Lost 1-4 more times than I'd care to admit :D It's pretty amazing all the stuff you can pick on by going watching old seasons again after the new ones have played.

This show is just made to watch in high def, as far as I'm concerned. Got my copy this morning and checked out a few of the bonus features and about half the season finale. The Lost University via BD-Live doesn't work yet, so I guess I'll see what that's all about tomorrow.

Hey giantchicken, what kind of case is used for season 5? Is it like season 1 and 2's cases with the thin hubs/disc buttons? If so, I may consider buying a Vortex 5 disc blu-ray case for replacement. Thanks in advance for your help.

This one is like the cases for seasons three and four--the case opens up with one separate hinge/disc holder flap on both the left and right side panels of the case, with the central spine area empty. Seasons one and two held more discs, and featured empty interior right and left side panels with one large hinge in the central spine housing all of the disc holders/flaps.

The case is housed in a thin cardboard sleeve like seasons one, two and four. Season three (the first one released) is in the larger and thicker hardcover case with velcro enclosure--it doesn't match the others and looks funny sitting in the middle of my collection. I hope that future pressings of season three include an updated slipcover that matches the rest of the series.

heh, wow that is pretty intense!

but yeah it is maybe the greatest show ever.

i was pretty intense when I caught up on 24 seasons 1-5 after having watched season 6 live (i have to say i came in in a lucky spot since starting in S6 gave away almost none of the crazy plot twists of 1-5, coming in during 5 or 7 would've given away a lot though! especially coming in during 2-5)

not quite as intense as your LOST marathon, but almost as bad haha

i wish FOX had put them out on bluray though as I had to use old DVD

If anyone picks this up from Best Buy, can you care to comment on the bonus disc that is supposed to be included that is exclusive to BB? I'm trying to decide it its worth it to pick that one up or just order from Amazon.

Wow just saw the Dharma Initiation Kit in person - it's practically the size of a vinyl record sleeve (though much thicker obviously)! Crazy huge.

k got the best buy set... Regular not dharma kit

the bonus disc is a DVD that is in a sleeve with the tag and shrink wrapped to the box that contains the following.
Lost on location: This place is death
Lost on location:316
Ben Vs Desmond
Lockes Leg
Rose and Bernard Retirements
Deleted scenes.

also...

The set contains 2 slipcovers:

The outer slipcover slides on horizontally and is the picture you see in the best buy add, this has the envelope for the Luggage tag and the DVD built in on the back, at first it appears that you can take this off but it would damage the cover.

The second slipcover is the artwork that we have been seeing all along and is slides on vertically.

Then the set has a regular 5 disc Blu ray case (21.8mm vortex size)

There ya go!

I just replaced the 5 disc case with an extra 6 disc case I had and now all six discs are in the case.

At my local Best Buy, the non-Dharma box sets were only available in the exclusive box. The Dharma Initiative set did not include the exclusive DVD disk.

And I'm sure glad I waited to see the Dharma set in person before buying it. It's way too big to sit on the shelf side-by-side with the other seasons, and I'm not going to devote part of the limited space on my top shelf just for the fifth season. Complete series, OK, but not for just one season. It is much less impressive in person as well. It's just a big, cardboard box with Dharma stuff printed on it.

Hey everyone. I picked up the Dharma Kit the day it came out, and I had a question. Does anyone else feel as though the dialogue is muffled? I've felt this way about every single Lost release, both DVD and Blu-Ray (I have them all). I recently upgraded my system and it still sounds the exact same way.

Whenever a male speaks it just sounds very boxy, especially Hurley and Richard Alpert. It really bothers because I love the show so much (I've watched each episode many....many times) and it's kind of distracting. I've read a lot of reviews on the sets and no one mentions dialogue problems, but some people on forums mention they have the same problems. I just watched Inglourious Basterds on Blu, and no dialogue problems there.

I'd love to hear some other opinions! Thanks guys, anxiously awaiting February 2!

I've noticed. The dialogue isn't perfectly recorded or to the standard of most movies (unlike many of the other aspects of the show) but I won't fault them for it as I know how crazy their schedule is for post on this show. I've noticed the dialogue more watching this season on Blu-ray than ever before. And to make it a bit worse there are a few characters who speak in a really muffled and quiet tones: Faraday most definitely, Sawyer sometimes, a few others. But for the most part it's never really unintelligible other than some Scottish accents. I don't know if you want more than a "I noticed it too" but, there you go. :) And I agree it is weird when you start noticing these things and no reviews you find sense the same thing. Anyway, also really looking forward to Feb. 2.

Thanks for the response. I at least wanted someone to acknowledge that they've noticed it too! I don't want to go upgrading my center only to find out it's going to be that way regardless. I don't understand how so many reviewers let this slide by, but thanks again for the input!

NYY64,
It's not just you. The dialogue does sound boxy from time to time. I remember on the DVDs a decrease in dialogue quality after the first season. Like Sujay was saying, they probably don't have time to loop all of the bad recordings.
BTW, what is on that ancient VHS tape?

Good to know, thanks.

The VHS tape is Pierre Chang explaining how life will be on the island for a new DI recruit. There are a few episode references and inside jokes if you watch carefully. I believe there are some YouTube videos showing the whole tape if you wanted to check it out - it's only 5 or 6 minutes.
