View Full Version : Panasonic 46 S1 possible burn in? Or not
C*Tedesco 07-05-09, 11:54 AM So I've had my Panasonic 46 S1 for about 3 months now. I followed the break in rules by Panasonic for the first 200 hours. I used the break in disc DNice recommend. I also only watch HDTV on this set.
Now the issue.
While watching the Wimbledon on NBC I noticed to my surprise a burn in on the sides of the screen which resembles which would be a 4:3 burn in. It's very prominent on the greens, especially the background when zooming in on the player between points. (darker green)
It's really bad, and it's permanent, nothing I do gets rid of them. My first thought was to call Panasonic, which they told me this would not be covered under the warranty...so theres that.
My question is, when looking at any other HD program, I cannot replicate what I will call 4:3 burn in. It's so far, just NBC Wimbleton. Could this be a problem on the broadcasters side? Sounds crazy, but I can't figure it out.
I do not watch 4:3 programming on this set, only 4:3 would be commercials in 4:3 and FIOS guide. I can't believe this would cause the 4:3 burn in.
Any thoughts on this?
I also have the same problem on my 46s1, watching Wimbledon. Also, i saw it last night, watching the fireworks program on NBC. When it was all black, with the fireworks going on, i could see the sides that would be 4:3.
So far, i only see it on NBC, nowhere else.
C*Tedesco 07-05-09, 05:33 PM Wow, well, this could be good news if we hear more people who have the same issue. It seems bizzare though, why would this happen?
Update:
On this forum I've heard a couple other people have the same issue with NBC so hopeuflly they will post here with their concerns.
abc123puck 07-05-09, 07:23 PM i had this same problem starting with the macy's fireworks last night. i thought i had 4:3 burn-in on my pio 6020 but maybe not now
abc123puck 07-05-09, 07:25 PM just curious, do u guys live in south Florida; because maybe the local nbc provider is having some broadcasting issue
C*Tedesco 07-05-09, 10:54 PM I'm actually in Maryland, not sure if it's national or in certain local markets, either way I'm trying to find out if in fact this is an NBC issue.
I'm from Indiana, using Directv HD with HDMI. Yes, it was the Macy's fireworks from last night. So far it looks like its a NBC issue.
C*Tedesco 07-06-09, 09:47 AM Thank God, I was getting in a yelling match with the Panasonic rep Friday about this. I might have to call back and aplogize.....ha!
I didn't watch the fireworks, just the tennis match and it was bad. I am still trying to reach NBC to find out what that is?
I also saw the semi-visible sidebars by watching both NBC broadcasts of the Macy's fireworks and Wimbledon. I definitely believe it was an NBC problem. I turned on my picture-in-picture function and I could still see the sidebars in the PIP window. Hopefully, NBC corrects the problem. It's making people think they have burn-in.
C*Tedesco 07-06-09, 09:13 PM I actually wrote to the NBC technical team regarding this. Don't think I'll get a reply from them, but I'll let you know.
thebigdaddye 07-07-09, 01:27 AM i remember back in like January or around that time i was watching a football game and i'm pretty sure it was nbc and when it would show a light background or very dark i could see side bars on my hitachi crt 57f59 hdtv and i thought at first it was burn in ,but i never watch 4x3 material. i then watched the game until it went to a lighter scene and could see it again and so i changed the channel to another hd feed and the 4x3 side bars were gone. i could hardly see them on the original channel unless like i said the background was very light or dark, but it turned out to be the source which i pretty sure was nbc. if you only see it on the one channel then i would not worry about it. i also have a panasonic plasma 42s1 an i make sure i only watch 16x9 shows all the time. hope this helps
bigkev4123 07-07-09, 01:46 AM I noticed the same thing on Comcast in Detroit during Wimbledon and the fireworks. I have the 50g10 and I was a little worried but I just figured there was something wrong with NBC broadcast as I did not see the problem on any other channels. I don't think you have burn-in

Thanks, we do appreciate it.
theformer45 07-07-09, 06:37 AM I had the same thing on my 54S1 while watching Wimbledon, so I went upstairs and turned on my JVC lcd, it had the same issue. I have not had any other problems with either set. I agree, it has to be an NBC issue.
optivity 07-07-09, 06:52 AM One downside w/HDTV is on occasion you may notice flaw(s) associated with a source program.
I remember the 1st time I noticed a de d/stuck pixel on my PDP(s), after I "freaked-out" was able to determine the problem was associated with a spot/scratch/etc. on the camera lens instead.
cristian_ro 07-07-09, 07:06 AM same here ... watching Wimbledon i noticed the 4:3 burn in only on the dark green behind the players. I thought my son forgot again the on-demand screen on after watching it . I thought it could be from my SA8300 guide but... i guess you guys noticed that too so i am not worried anymore. NBC needs to fix that!
