View Full Version : What is your longest gaming session?
joebloggs13 07-06-09, 11:00 PM Would you fall in the...
1-3 hrs
3-6 hrs
6-9 hrs
9+ hrs
What game?
For myself, being a relative newcomer (after a long hiatus), I have logged about 5.5 hrs as my longest single session. Oblivion
As an adult, 9+ easy. COD4 online.
As a teenager, a friend and I would rent Koei games on the NES and play them over the weekend from Friday night until Sunday night. Minimal breaks for food and a bit of sleep.
terryb28 07-06-09, 11:10 PM By far Street Fighter II for the SNES. Probably typically played 9 hrs. straight on a regular basis with friends in middle school. I don't think I'm capable of sessions like that anymore, but that game had me hook, line, and sinker when it came out.
I've played some marathon sessions of Civ that must have been 12+ hours.
randy5554 07-07-09, 12:01 AM Probably around 9 with Perfect Dark multiplayer on the Nintendo 64. I can't wait for the XBLA version this fall!
Billbofet 07-07-09, 12:11 AM My longest session was back in college during a snow day.
My two roommates and I played Tekken 1 and Twisted Metal 1 for at least 10 hours. This was within about three months of the playstation being out, so we were mezmorized by the graphics that could only be possible on this witchcraft device.
Good times.
I played BF2 over 10 hours multiple times. ahhh whats a fun ass game!
COD 4 online ps3, played from about 9pm until about 8 am once.
darthrsg 07-07-09, 02:27 AM As an adult, 9+ easy. COD4 online.
As a teenager, a friend and I would rent Koei games on the NES and play them over the weekend from Friday night until Sunday night. Minimal breaks for food and a bit of sleep.
Pretty similar here.
Now I may get a 6 hour run in on a game(last was Little Big Planet), back in high school I know I pulled many 12 plus sessions(Fallout PC).
Johnsteph10 07-07-09, 03:57 AM Goldeneye 64 on the Nintendo 64 - 4 player in college...
Started Friday morning and played until Monday morning sometime with breaks. I remember falling asleep and waking up with totally new people in my room several times.
whiskey > work 07-07-09, 07:13 AM suikoden for ps1. 48 hours straight
maximuslcd 07-07-09, 07:43 AM Everquest on ps2, I used to work out of town and was in a motel everynight, I had regular 6 hr sessions everynight. Nowadays after 2-2 1/2 hrs i'm just done and ready to move on to something else.
My longest gaming session was probably around 8 or 9 hours straight with Turok for the old N64 back when the game was first released (I don't even want to think about when that was). There was an area with a series of platform jumps, obstacles and lots of enemies and if you screwed anything up, the checkpoints were spread really far apart, leading to a lot of replaying. I spent a significant part of the day cursing my way thru that area. I got thru it but had a mammoth headache afterwards and was pretty much out of it for a couple of days.
These days, I'll put in a couple of hours at a time at most, usually in the evening after work as a way to unwind.
mproper 07-07-09, 08:46 AM Back in my college days, I once logged nearly a 30 hour Doom session in college. And probably a 20 hour Final Fantasy VII session.
My longest session in the current generation would probably be in the 6 hour range (Rock Band 2 or GTAIV). I just don't have the time I once did, so my typical session is probably less than 2 hours nowadays.
Back when I was in school me and friends would play from whenever it was we got up untill we went to bed.
I remeber in the summer at one friends we'd play till we were to hot, jump in his pool, run back up stairs and keep playing... Think it was 4 player UT on dreamcast and then late Halo CE
Now a days for me to play over a hour and half is huge deal, which makes playing RPG's really hard as I usally only play about 30 minutes
When Assassin's Creed came out I had ordered it......it arrived Friday at my doorstep, when I came home from work at 5:00pm I grabbed some food, put the game disc in and started playing. It was around 8:00pm SATURDAY night when I finally stopped playing and went to bed. I paused for bathroom and snack breaks. When I went to prepare for bed my eyes were unbelievably bloodshot, a bit scary as I don't think I had ever starred at a screen for so long and had never seen my eyes that bloodshot before.
So....5:30pm Friday night to 8:00pm Saturday night....at age 41.
At most now it's the occasional 9:00pm to 3:00am once every month or so...
masterrh 07-07-09, 10:31 AM Blood gulch ctf
I got Resident Evil 2 for the original Playstation on it's launch date. I started playing that afternoon and didn't stop until I'd finished the game the next morning.
joebloggs13 07-07-09, 11:56 AM I hear you about not being able to find the time. I usually have some spare time to play at around 9pm, so I through a disc in, and before I know it it's after midnight...and I have to be at the crack of ass:D...Oh well, the life of an addict.:)
27 hours, Halo 1.
30 hours, MPBT Solaris on Kesmai Gamestorm.
62 hours, Dungeon Siege MP.
silvam14 07-07-09, 12:12 PM Great thread. I think I logged about 6-7 hours on Simcity 4 one night. Started a game at 10 and next thing I knew, it was 5AM!
Mass Effect...in one session...now been thru the x360 vers 6 times and the PC version 14 times...I liked the game is an understatement.
agnathra 07-07-09, 12:43 PM Would you fall in the...

What game?
For myself, being a relative newcomer (after a long hiatus), I have logged about 5.5 hrs as my longest single session. Oblivion
this will not only show how sad i am, but how old.
back in college when the 1st might and magic game game came out (87 maybe?), i sat at my computer desk in my room for about a week, only leaving my room to eat and go to the bathroom, literally. fortunately i had a bed in there. so that's at least 16 hrs/day for a week. total time (i added it up at the end) was between 115-120 hours. there is a reason i avoid world of warcraft.
in modern times the longest session was on the day halo3 came out. a 3 person session over live...it took us about 15 hours straight to get through the campaign on legendary.
if anyone has a longer session than the might and magic one, you have my congratulations and pity :p
formulanerd 07-07-09, 01:04 PM i remember running act raiser (rented) non-stop on SNES for a full 4 day weekend, paused the game for sleep, bathroom, and food.
Once a year some buddies and I take our consoles and TVs to one of our places and have a Video Game Night from 7pm through dawn. Lately Rock Band and Halo 3 have been the popular 'early' games, then we turn to working on whatever our current single-player projects are as the night goes on. And White Castle sliders almost always make a [later regretted] appearance.
Lord Flatus 07-07-09, 02:57 PM Back in the day....a chemically assisted 4 day black-thumb inducing session of NHL Hockey on the Intellivision.
dbburns 07-07-09, 03:51 PM I played Dead Rising for over 14 hours straight to get the 7 Day Survivor achievement. Got up early on a Saturday morning and finished it by midnight. What a waste of a day. :( On the bright side, on the way to getting the 7 Day Survivor achievement, you get the 5 Day Survivor achievement as well. Woo hoo. 40 achievement points.
jtexasflood 07-07-09, 04:00 PM I had a gaming session where I didn't leave my seat for 1 week. I had one of those theatre seats with the built in toliet and a refrigerator next to me. It smelled, but man was it fun. j/k. Only about 9 straight hours with army of two and a 92" screen. good times.
In college I played Baulder's Gate for probably 18 hours straight. Absolutely amazing game but I must have put almost 200 hours into it and never finished. Which is why I'm really looking forward to Dragon Age but fear it. My career would take a big hit if it hooks me like that.
On 360 I've had a couple weekend binges on games I really liked. Fable 2, Banjo Kazooie N&B, Mass Effect, Bioshock and GTAIV have all gotten me for 6 or 7 hours.
jones07 07-07-09, 05:05 PM 6 hrs with Gears of war 2......this past weekend on the way to my 1st and 2nd 50 wave game ever, with 3 great guys and one very good female. Felt great to play with folks in their late 20's an 30's.
Hate playing on teams with kids :(
PS: Wife give me many dirty looks :D
chad473 07-07-09, 07:26 PM probably tecmo bowl on the nes. I can definitely remember playing a season or two straight through when I was like 10 or 11.
Between work and my nephews I don't don't get a whole lot of straight gaming time in anymore. Mostly just midnight to 3AM...ish EST these days. Back in the day...I had a marathon session of Defender on the Atari. It started at like 7AM and went until 9PM when my mom unplugged it cuz I wouldn't come to the dinner table. I had like 50 or so lives I think. Good times...

oh yeah, forgot the atari. got it christmas morning at 8 am and played nonstop till 4 am. probably my longest stretch without sleeping. but not as sad as the might and magic marathon since i was actually playing WITH someone.
deedubbadoo 07-08-09, 12:48 PM I have no idea how many hours straight we logged but myself and two buddies put in some serious time on Gladius for the original Xbox. I almost lost my girlfriend over that game...not joking at all.
talyler 07-08-09, 05:37 PM I've played FFXI for over 12 hours straight with nothing but a piss break many times. I was a disaster when I played that game. Worked full time, then pretty much played that till my eyes bled every day and nonstop on weekends. Racked up 150 days (3600 hours) of playtime over a couple years.
These days it's hard to play any game nonstop for 2 hours. I have to take a break and do something else for a while.
Lord_Zath 07-08-09, 06:03 PM Longest gaming straight (no breaks) would have to be a four-player 99 stock round of Smash Brothers. Took just over 1 hour, 45 minutes straight.
Other notables - A full weekend of nonstop PTO (Pacific Theater of Operations) for SNES, followed by a wonderful two week christmas vacation of PTO II when it came out (also for SNES). I've also done the famous Civ-a-thons mentioned above.
@tal - I'm having the same problem. I wonder if it's me getting old or if games have changed. Or both!
oh yeah, forgot the atari. got it christmas morning at 8 am and played nonstop till 4 am. probably my longest stretch without sleeping. but not as sad as the might and magic marathon since i was actually playing WITH someone.
Yeah unfortunately after that Defender marathon I was restricted to only 3 hours a night and 5 on the weekends. That was only if it was just me playing. If my brother or sister wanted to play then we would have to rotate every 15 minutes. I was not a happy camper after that. lol
dogmanky 07-09-09, 10:44 AM Back in the LAN party days it was UT and Team Fortress for 12 hr runs, but nowadays my longest is a 8 hr run with Fallout 3 on the 360.
whityfrd 07-09-09, 12:21 PM Burnout 3 takedown for atleast 5 hours every night for 4 months. What can i say i owned noobs and always enjoyed the homemade destruction derbys with friends. Literally the best video game i ever played. Still have it on the origionals download and play it from time to time. Just not alot of people play it anymore.
michanecash 07-09-09, 12:28 PM 9+ hours when halo two came out
I remember a few 9+ hour sessions:
The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time (Beat the game 100% in 7 days when it came out)
Final Fantasy X and XII
Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II
SOCOM II (quite a few times LOL) and some on SOCOM 3/Confrontation (online of course!)
Nowadays I don't have much time to play games like I used to, but if I do/can play for an extended amount of time I can't go for more than 4-5 hours without needing a break. If I do go for 3+ hours it's mostly playing Guitar Hero (all of them except the first one), Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare (online) or Gears of War 2 (online).
brandonnash 07-12-09, 02:12 PM 11 hours once playing a Russian at internet chess. That was a single game with no time limit between moves. That was my longest chess game and my longest pc game I ever played. Had no idea I had played that long, but I started playing on Friday night and finished just after the sun came up. This was years ago.
whiskey > work 07-12-09, 04:26 PM pretty sure I had some real long sessions with sim city on snes. Loved that game
slyderulz 07-12-09, 05:07 PM 12-14 hours with Halo: CE...easily and often
Anytime I have a marathon gaming session now (to the point where the vision gets a little blury) it's called getting 'Halo eyes'.
quickfire 07-12-09, 05:18 PM The longest time spent playing a game....theirs been plenty....
22 hours straight playing Gears of War 2 earlier this year.......heck on Saturday June 27th 09--started my week long vacation...I started playing Gears 2 at 4pm and played non-stop till 11am the next morning (which is about 19 hours straight game play)!!!
my GT x STRYKKER x
Red Cell 07-14-09, 06:43 PM +1 terryb28
SFII was Epic on SNES.
That and PC Counterstrike, Quake II, etc
cgmoore 07-16-09, 01:34 PM Wasteland and Pirates! on the C64... there were several lost weekends chalked up to those two games alone.
Somebody else mentioned "black thumbs" from the intellivision pads. MAN that brings back memories!
joebloggs13 07-16-09, 08:26 PM 11 hours once playing a Russian at internet chess. That was a single game with no time limit between moves. I am also a big chess fan. Are there any really good chess engines out there? I own Majestic chess and chessmaster 9000, both of which are good games.
ddrheretic 07-16-09, 08:49 PM Wowglider put in some serious hours for me =)
I've had some many long gaming sessions that not just one comes to mind.. Some of the fondest were twisted metal 2 with friends loser passes their pad.. Goldeneye got some serious 4 player love as well.. Goddamn I hated how the smoke would kill you if it touched ya..
mikeloxlong 07-17-09, 09:34 AM right after graduating college, on the OG XBOX, I went from 7PM to 7AM and about 20 beers playing some Rainbow Six 3. Only bathroom breaks. god, that was an awesome game. Played on a 19" CRT with stereo speakers but I was still killin' fools
These days, I've been able to pull a 8PM to about 4AM playing COD4. playing on a 110" and all the bells the whistles.
My gaming has grown up but stamina has decreased. One of these days, we should all do something similar. Let's throw out a date, pick a game and play it for as long as we can. LOL! First AVS All Nighter raising money for some charity

+1
I've definately pulled some all nighters with COD4 and WaW. Heck, I just pulled one last week with 1943. Apparently I have an addictive personality. :D
e_e_emarpea 07-17-09, 03:14 PM my longest gaming days were probably from EverQuest. Several times I logged 24 hours in a 24 hour period. Hence the nickname EverCrack. Thankfuly I was married by the time WoW came along (so maybe 6 hours a session? lol).
pcweber111 07-17-09, 10:53 PM I once ran a full 24hr race of Le Mans on the 24 hr Le Mans game on the Dreamcast with stops for restroom and snacks. Good game btw. I will never do something like that again but it was an interesting experience.
vanguard 07-18-09, 03:12 PM Just a few months ago I spent over 7 hours playing L4D. Blood harvest on expert was at the very edge of my group's ability at the time but we all wanted the achievement. 7 hours isn't that extreme but it was 9:00 pm to 4:00 am. One of the guys we played with was in England, 6 hours ahead of us. His game was from 3:00 am to 10:00 am.
Insane hours.
plasmaowner 07-20-09, 12:16 AM Back in the Street Fighter II days at the arcades (1987) I would go to the mall as soon as they opened 10am and be there until they closed 10pm owning people on SFII non stop. I was 15 back then :D
Can't give an exact amount, but my friend and I played every NES game we could rent and would spend all free time playing. We would sleep and eat of course, but that was about it. You name a game, we played it. Dorks, yes, but it kept us out of trouble. Didn't live in the best of areas.
As we got older we still played Tecmo Super Bowl tournaments (best game ever made by the way). Tournaments are easily over 6 hours long.
Just in case you are interested in retro gaming... you must check out Gold Medal Challenge '92 and Tecmo Super Bowl. Highly competitive and ridiculously fun to play with friends.
mbeiler 07-20-09, 09:21 PM Christmas evening 1998- somehow got away from the family to play this new game called Half Life. Didn't stop playing until I beat it the next morning around 6am.
Most recent marathon was probably GTAIV which I played heavily for 4 or 5 days stright. (I was unemployed)
l88bastard 07-20-09, 09:49 PM Halo 1 on a 4 way lan...my buddy had four tvs in his house spread out in different rooms and we had 4-16 crackheads playing from 6pm until whenever about four times a week....most games would end well after sunrise...like 9-10am....it was brutal walking out of his dark mancave into the sunlight of the unknown into an unforgiving day! Lets just say between BF1942 and Halo1 lan action, all of my 2002 was a wash...I don't know how I managed to graduate university in early 02 but I did, but once I did all I did was hit the halo and 42 crackpipe!
SAVholic 07-20-09, 10:59 PM I had like 7 hours of COD4 once
plasmaowner 07-20-09, 11:45 PM Back when RE first came out (1995) on the Playstation, I played it non stop for about 24 hours until I gave up frustrated as hell. It was the best graphics I'd ever seen and boy was it scary. I started playing it at around 6pm and finally gave up 6pm the next day. I was at the very end (or so I thought). I got stuck on the part with the crows and pictures of an infinite, baby, child, etc. You had to press the button under the pictures in a certain order. If you screwed up the crows would come flying down to pick your brains out your head. Man I spent hours running around not knowing what to do going back over everything thinking I missed something. That was the only room left and I for the life of me was stomped. I was stuck on that part for days. When I finally figured it out, I was for sure I was about to beat the game since I now could open the door down the hall (back of the mansion). HA! To my surprise I still had a LONG ways to go and was still at the very beginning. Man was that a great game or what! Such good times!

Thanks for sharing,
Halo 1 lan parties was some of my best gaming in history. I remember thinking I was so good until I start playing online (xbc) and at lan parties. I got owned so bad and was determined to get better. Me and my friends would spend several hours learning the maps and tricks that made Halo1 so great (grenade jumps, soft landings, double melee attacks, timing power-ups, couch jumping, plasma pistol/rifle freezing/raping, mastering the sniper and beloved pistol, etc). We eventually got so good that we starting playing in tournament under the 00clan. I played as Darkman00, friends Murda00, Blade00. I stopped playing Halo all together when Halo2 came out. I was very disappointed with the gameplay, they just took all the skill required out of it IMO.
HorrorScope 07-21-09, 12:41 PM My personal best so far is 11 minutes and 27 seconds. I keep falling on the ground bouncing like a fish out of water then waking up to a foamy mouth.
formulanerd 07-21-09, 03:57 PM Thanks for sharing,

they removed all the glitching you worked so hard on... lol
jholzbauer 07-21-09, 04:51 PM Christmas Day when I received Decathalon for the Atari 2600. I played the game for 10 hours straight. I had taken the rubber portion of the controller off so it was just the white joystick part. I wore a dime sized indentation into my palm which lasted for days. I still am one of the kings of those olympic type games.
Had some Quake 2 matches in college until 5:00 am. More recently, some long Civ 3 matches. More recent than that, nothing more than 5 or 6 hours. Kids will do that to you.
I was just wondering what kind of physical aliments arose from playing these marathon hours? Bloodshot eyes, sore neck, etc., but what were some of the more serious afflictions did you gamers experience? Believe me I'm not knocking you guys, I think it's pretty incredible to be able to play for sooo many hours.'m not much of a gamer but even short periods of playing tears my thumbs up!

Halo 2 sucked and still sucks, Halo 3 is very weak but better than two. Like you I thought I was pretty good at halo until I played online and like you, I stopped playing once halo 2 rolled around. The original Halo is one of the best games of all time and I still have four copies to play whenever I have friends over...I think I will always play the original, just love everything about it.
Halo, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are my all time favs!

Lol, yes, I had a similar experience...I was a broke 19year old (I had a mortgage and a car payment at the time!) and did not have any money to buy a memory card after I bought the PS1 and Resident evil brand new...I figured that I could beat the game in one sitting and would just get a memory card later when I had the cash..... HHHAAAAA I got to the part where you fight the HUGE SNAKE and I could not friggin beat the thing...
I was sooooo tired and I figured that it was the boss of the game because it was so hard and awesome, lol.....I tried for hours to beat it and was increasing frustrated because I knew that I could not turn the system off because I would loose all of my progress...I felt like I was on the cusp of everest but eventually I gave up out of sheer exhaustion and frustration....I went an got a memory card the next day, eventually passed the snake and realized that the game was VEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRYY long and that I was an idiot for thinking I was anywhere near the end of it, lol.
And MAN OHHH MAN when I fought the boss the TYRANT it was like 3am and that thing freaked me OUT! Best single player game ever, my all time favorite!

ohhh I had the 2600 and Decathalon! It was one of the best games on the system along with pitfall II, boxing, adventure, bezerk, football and some tank/plane game that I dont know the name of.
Decathalon killed my palms, always had callouses from that game, big painful blisters lol, but I had two brothers and sisters so we all had messed up hands lol....played that game for countless hours!

I didn't get laid until college. Does that count?

HA! That snake!! LOLOLOL.... I must have died 20 times on that part! Thats sooo funny, whats even funnier is you didn't even have to fight him, just simply run and get the emblem (or whatever it was don't remember) and run out the room. There were so many things that made the game so great. While many hated them, I loved the fixed camera's, the slow loading times for doors to open. I even loved the controls! :D The voice acting was so bad it was good, "you were almost a Jill sandwich!" I will agree that RE is one of the greatest single player games of all time. Check this clip out, should bring back many memoires and a few laughs. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kn7seaYsVGI&feature=related) :p
Did you ever play the remake on the gamecube. I loved that one two and feel it stayed true to the original.
I've spent many 12+hr sessions playing CIV4 or Simcity games back in the day...
agnathra 07-22-09, 10:00 AM I was just wondering what kind of physical aliments arose from playing these marathon hours? Bloodshot eyes, sore neck, etc., but what were some of the more serious afflictions did you gamers experience? Believe me I'm not knocking you guys, I think it's pretty incredible to be able to play for sooo many hours.'m not much of a gamer but even short periods of playing tears my thumbs up!
when i did my week long marathon, it was mouse/keyboard. no sore thumbs and carpal tunnel hadn't been invented yet.
plus i was a teenager. they can withstand a lot of punishment. i used to not even get hangovers :) or laid :(
