I've been looking around for over a week now, and nobody seems to have the canon bp-827 battery in stock for a reasonable price. I'm leaving for vacation in about a month and may be forced to pay more for this darn battery just for the "convenience" of someone having it in stock. I have checked the usual outfits, adorama, b&h, abe's, even new world video and mac mall. They are all backordered, and progressively more expensive as we go down the list at google products...

Upon second look, it really looks like nobody has this battery in stock. Any suggestions? I don't really want to buy two bp-819's just to get a decent amount of recording time...

I know you are asking for the canon version, but have you considered the knockoff versions?
I've had a knockoff version of this battery for a couple of months. Works great!!! I got it off ebay and recieved it within a couple of days.
from sellbuz
got free shipping and got it for 33% off the asking price

I have seen some of the off-brand extended batteries, but I don't really feel comfortable with those. Plus, I'd prefer to be able to charge in-camera like I do now.

Is this battery just new and not generally available yet?

Edit: I'm sure I'll be able to find one in Tokyo (yodobashi camera shows it on their site) when I get there, but that cuts out the first day's worth of filming, and the airport, and anything much else on the way there...

Try this one. It will work great with your Canon camcorder...

I purchased the same one for my HG21 and it's excellent, Its the only non canon brand battery that allows you use the charger that came with your camcorder, you just plug it into the battery outside of the camcorder as pictured , it will charge without any issue, no need to buy a seperate charger... the only drawback is you will not see how long your battery life is from the canon viewscreen...(is that worth another $40)...And the battery itself will tell you its charge status if you really need to know....

The company delivers fast and the battery works great, excellent quality...They also offer even larger capacity ones as well....
Canon has basically tried to lock out any competition to it camcorder accessories line whether it be with the mini proprietary shoe, and now the additions to the batteries, they then mark up their items to an extreme price..
Don't fall for the bull thats spread about the web about off brand batteries killing most of the camcorders.
There are a few really cheap battery suppliers that you should stay clear of, but most of suppliers make great batteries for the Canon camcorders that work perfectly at half the price...

My HG10 and now my HG21 have performed without a hitch with OEM batteries....The money I saved has allowed me to buy more useful accessories....some of them even canon....

Specs:
Canon HG10
Canon HG21
WD-H43 Canon Lens
Rode Stereo Video Mic
Glidecam 2000 Pro

So how long does that one last? I see it's listed as a 2400mAh, which is fairly close to the 827, but I've had off brand batteries that don't last nearly as long as the mAh rating would indicate.

Mine went just a little over 2 Hours if memory serves me, I am now recording to my SDHC 32Gig Card which holds 2Hrs 59 Minutes worth of HD footage, I will give you the exact time as soon as the camera is forced to shut down.....

Hmm... The original 809 battery lasts a little over an hour, I'd really like it if a huge battery would last 3+ hours.

By the way, the battery I recommended charges just like the warriorking recommended battery, so maybe it is the same battery. I think there are many like this, but maybe they are all the same manufacturer.
It was only $30, including shipping.
It was a 3400mH capacity I think, but you can look at the
I recently bought a second battery (but the next size down) and it seems fine, too.

OK I shut down after 1hr 20 Minutes, thats recording to the SDHC card with the LCD screen at its brightest setting using the 2400 battery..The 2hr mark was with my HG10 using a 2400 battery ( my mistake)...seems it draws a little less...In my experience the included 807 that came with my HG21 is lucky to last 40 minutes... I would grab a couple of 3400's or better, you could get 2 for the price of a single canon brand...

I went for make an offer. Bought the BP-827 for $30.
Bought the Bp-819 for $17. Both had free shipping.
By the way, I don't take credit for finding this. I think I found it through a previous "oem battery..." topic.

And how is the battery life with the 827 type model?

I've filmed for maybe close to 1 hour. I haven't even recharged it. I'll be taking it on vacation next week, so that will be the big test. Some times you just have to take a chance.

Well, I ordered one of the ebay 827's (for $30), I'll try to give it a rundown test whenever it gets here. Maybe I'll have to cancel my backorder on the canon battery if this one works well enough.

I just did a run-down test of the knockoff 827. I charged the battery up, set the hg20 on my desk and hit record on MXP mode. Approx. 3 hours later it gave up the ghost. Not bad for $30! I just ordered a second one for a spare.

Oh, and the brilliant LEDs used for the charge indicator could probably be used for a makeshift flashlight :p

I went with a Canon BP 819 -- the medium-sized battery. Had to wait awhile for stock to replenish, but B&H finally got more in early this week.

This is just my experience, and I do not intend to claim others are wrong, but knock-off batteries for Canon cameras and camcorders just have not worked well for me. I think the Canon battery prices are as obscene as the hp ink prices for their printers (for example), but I pay it because the Canon batteries perform well and the knock-offs have not.

I was hesitant about that too, and aside from not getting a minute-by-minute countdown on the screen, I'm pretty happy with the battery I got. I picked up two of them (which should be good for 6 hours of recording time) for 1/2 the price of a canon 827.
