View Full Version : How come there is no blu ray music
ps24eva 07-08-09, 03:37 PM How come you can't use blu-ray to replace the CD.
I know mp3 has sort of replaced the cd, but we all know mp3's are absolute crap quality.
Even FLAC or CD is crap quality compared with Blu-ray.
I want blu-ray music disks for the road
jorgerod 07-08-09, 04:58 PM Probably for the same reason High Quality Formats like SACD and DVD-A have died or have been relegated to Niche status. Audiophiles and Audio Enthusiasts comprise maybe no more than 20% of the music buying population. The other 80% are content with MP3 and other overcompressed formats because they only want to hear sound, not melody.

Morpheo 07-08-09, 04:58 PM Why put a 10 tracks or so album on a 25/50 GB disk? There's no use. Given that multi-channel audio isn't about to become a standard anytime soon... (I understand it would be useful to put an entire catalog on a single disk, but this application is too "user-specific" to be widly adopted by the "industry")
jvillain 07-08-09, 06:34 PM If the music studios hadn't given up on DRM then they would probably be pushing to get on BD and off of CD. But they have sort of seen the light so BD doesn't look like any kind of a saviour for them.
Besides until spec 3 gets finalized there is no standard way for a deck to access the music. While I may not believe in downloaded movies the days of buying CDs to stick in a car are over. I just can't see any one wanting to develop a whole new deck format that involves shiny disks. Expect to see more Blue Tooth and flash style decks in cars and less shiny disks in cars in the future. Weight and space demand it and the fewer people digging through their CD holder while driving the better.
For the home their are a few audio only disks.

even multichannel fits just fine on DVD-A
eightninesuited 07-08-09, 07:22 PM even multichannel fits just fine on DVD-A
There are 100x more blu-ray players in people's homes than DVD-A players. The whole DVD-A SACD was a waste of time!
I hope they just can the whole SACD and DVDA thing and just start releasing multi channel audio on blu-ray. Or better yet, include the audio tracks on concert blu-rays as well.
AmishFury 07-08-09, 10:18 PM actually i know more people with DVD-A players than bluray players... and that's not counting computers with decent soundcards
plus again niche market bigtime... sales of lossy formats are outperforming sales of even CD
also to be perfectly honest 16bit 44.1KHz is more than enough... no listener will ever get any real benefit from 24bit and people claiming they can hear the >22.05KHz tones are generally full of crap even above 15-17KHz is a bit of a stretch...
But there IS music on Blu-ray:
just a few examples:
classical collection (seperately available, too): http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=5068
2L sampler, they have now several classical releases:
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=5296
Neil Young archives:
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=1200
and then there are the music videos of concerts, ballets and operas.
audiotomb 07-09-09, 07:35 AM the neil young boxset and great reviews will inspire some key artists or their respective record companies to flogg the old canon one more time in blu
now if the NYA don't sell that well, it may be tough
not everyone has $250 to splurge on such a collection
why don't the beatles do it? zeppelin? who?
zeppelin discs were recently half off at bb,
wonder if it's cleaning the shelves before a blu box set?

I beg to differ when it comes to DVD-Audio tracks encoded with FLAC. :p

How do you do this w/multichannel?
Also- does anybody have problems with verified FLAC encodes 'skipping' from time to time?
MSmith83 07-10-09, 12:34 PM How do you do this w/multichannel?
You can do both stereo and multichannel through foobar2000. Check the surround music format section of AVS for more information.

I don't have any issues with my FLAC files. I encode them through foobar and use WASAPI exclusive mode in foobar for listening.
