I had a question on mounting a 52xbr9. Sony has noted it weighs 57lbs. The room I want to mount it in has only one stud dead center of the room. The studs are 24" apart so I can only secure it to one stud while having the TV remain at dead center. Will this be enough support for the TV or should I support it in the sheetrock for additional support? What should I use for the sheet rock support locations. I did read about suggestions on installing plywood behind the TV but my wife does not want me cutting sections of sheetrock....

Finally, can anyone recomend a mount that will swivel and tilt, yet still be wide enough to spread out the bracing in the sheet rock to avoid a wobble when being moved to connect additional devices? More flush to the wall when retracted the better.

Thanks for the help.

You've got a couple options that I can think of:

1 - Use the center holes on your mount to go into the stud. I would make very certain you are in the center of the stud and that you use 3.5"+ lag screws with washers to secure it to the stud. If there is another hole in the center that you can get a third in there, do it. I would guess that if you do this right, that would be enough support. You could add some toggle bolts to the corners to secure to the drywall by itself for some added support.

2 - Go with the plywood method. You would only need a piece of plywood a little bigger than the mount base. You would not need to cut out sheetrock. You would need to secure the plywood VERY well to the sheetrock...probably using 6+ toggle bolts and 2 - 4 heavy screws into the center stud. Then you can use 1.5 inch (or so) lag screws to secure the mount to the plywood.

I think these are your best options.
