My meager little setup consists of the following:

AVR: Onkyo TX-SR576
Fronts: Polk TSI300
Center: Polk CS10
Rear: Polk TSI100
SW: Polk PSW111

Anyways, I ran the auto setup on the avr and it set everything to the following:

Nay.

I don't know how Ausyssey is set up on that receiver and what sort of options it gives you, but if you have a sub you should set ALL other speakers to Small with a crossover of 80 hz.

Thanks, after reading around that seems to be the overall consensus.

the bottom line is how you like it to sound. The AVR set the Xover at 40 hz because your mains go down pretty low. Try leaving the mains on large and manually change the xover in the AVR for the sub to 80 HZ and see how that sounds. Keep tweaking to where it sounds good to you and have some fun.

And according to the settings that your receiver applied after running Audyssey it would appear that they are capable of that. If you are interested, there is plenty of discussion within these forums regarding running your speakers as SMALL with an 80Hz crossover, regardless of their low-end capability.

That said, your receiver applied those particular settings because of the results Audyssey reported to it. The settings that any particular manufacturer's receivers use are dictated by the manufacturer, not by Audyssey. So, "correct" or not, there is some logic behind the settings that were applied. The 40Hz crossover was chosen for the speakers that were set to SMALL because Audyssey detected an in-room -3dB point that was lower than 40Hz. Even though the speakers may not be spec'd to go that low, a speaker's output can be reinforced by the room. Your front speakers were set to LARGE because Audyssey reported a low-end capability that is below the point that ONKYO chose to use as the cut-off for SMALL vs. LARGE.

But there is no reason that you can't change the settings that your receiver applied after running Audyssey. It may be preferable for you to run your front speakers as SMALL. Since a 40Hz crossover was applied to your other SMALL channels, you could leave that setting, although many would probably recommend that you raise it to at least 60Hz and maybe even, as recommended above, 80Hz.

You may want to check out the dedicated Audyssey thread over in the receivers and amps subforum for some more info.

I missed read the OP. I thought he had set them as large.

But on a side note don't you think that 40 HZ is a low setting for the small channels? That is why I missed read. I just don't trust the auto setups.

My point was to him was to just have fun with his system and to explore what sounds best to him while applying the advice given on this forum. I will make sure to read more carefully in the future. And thanks for pointing out my booboo.;)

Audyssey DID measure his speakers, in his room and in their location in the room, to have a lower -3dB point than 40Hz. Whether the measurements were done correctly is an unknown. As is the quality of the mic that ONKYO provides (it is probably OK). But, yes, there ARE reasons why a higher crossover point might be preferable.

If i set all the speakers to small and change the crossover to 80 the sound is ok but it seems as if the mains are begging for more. having them set to large really brings them to life. i will try leaving them set to large and maybe bump up the crossover to 60hz and 80hz and see what i like. Audyssey's settings might only be a suggestion, like wearing pants in public.

I suggest you read "Small vs Large"

It will help you understand.
