View Full Version : Xbox 360 in a home theater
So I have set up my home theater and have my xbox in it, but it got me thinking. If you could have the perfect xbox 360 for the home theater what would it look like?
For me, a bigger hard drive would be first so I could load a bunch of games on it and select from them without getting up to change discs.
Just for fun, what other options would you like to see?
mproper 07-09-09, 04:41 PM Something that fits in my rack like the rest of my components. Why consoles insist on wanting to be the "central hub" of my home theater and then giving me a design that doesn't work in any rack known to man astounds me.
It's like I bought a car that has tons of bells and whistles and works great, but it won't fit it in my garage with all my other cars and has to sit outside like a red-headed stepchild. Then my friends come over and laugh at my "toy" that looks like a Playschool reject.

signmastr 07-09-09, 04:51 PM Even with a huge harddrive (I have 60gb) you still need to change disks when switching games. Copyright protection I believe...
coyote_5 07-09-09, 05:00 PM yeah playing from your harddrive without a disc won't be a possibility until the games are available as digital content downloads.
RobertR1 07-09-09, 05:57 PM Starting this fall, you'll be able to buy "Xbox 360 Classics" and download them directly to your 360. No disc required. I'm sure they'll slowly creep that service to newer games over time. Personally, I don't mind swapping discs and I like the ability to trade them in or buy used games during the slower times of the year.

Ditto. If I'm paying for a game, i'd like a hard copy of it. Never know when you're gonna want to play a game and there is no internet connection to verify that its yours.

3x ditto
Since were dreaming a USB Blu-ray for movies, and HD sound over HDMI so I don't have to have a ps3 as well.
ogbuehi 07-09-09, 09:45 PM Blu-Ray capabilities would be nice. Built in wireless capabilities instead of having to fork over $100 for that adapter.
mystik610 07-09-09, 10:13 PM I've had my 360 hooked up to my home theater for a while...but heres a list of things that would certainly be nice:
-Ability to bitstream lossless audio
-Built in blu-ray drive
-a larger hard-drive for sure
-a classier looking dashboard that directly integrates windows media center
-a classier, lower profile, hardware shell that looks more like a home theater device than a toy
-keyboard and mouse connectivity
-a full functioning web browser, possibly IE based, with FULL flash and java support. The PS3 browser blows hard.
-built in wireless N adapter for streaming high definition video AND audio without a hitch
Had even a few of these features been available, I might have never spent money on getting a PS3 alongside my 360. In fact, if they were to release a new xbox 360 SKU with these types of specifications, I'd probably poney up the cash for one.
That being said, the reason the 360 is successful as a gaming device is that Microsoft focused their resources to making the 360 a good gaming device. Sony, on the other hand, tried to make the PS3 a home theater device and put gaming on the backburner.....and as a home theater device, the PS3 isn't spectacular either (although it is a good value!)

From an HT perspective, I don't care about wireless. A good setup is wired. I want a gigabit network port, rather than the 100 megabit crap we have now. Fan noise is really not an issue, either. I don't want to see wasted efforts on a web-browser. I've got an HTPC for that crap, if I ever wanted to do that. What I want to see is an even better Xbox, not some wimpy PC-wannabe.
Quieter fan
+1
Make it near silent.
magawake 07-12-09, 12:10 AM So, will they ever upgrade Xbox 360's media player? I want to play flac natively.
How about 2 way communication for advanced remotes, or *gasp* remote IP protocols for controlling over my LAN? That would be nice when trying to integrate it into the entire system.
Hmm, other things...
- Blu-Ray? Yes.
- Larger hard drive? Yes (I have the 120GB, and would love to use an aftermarket one that's 500GB or up for game storage, videos, etc.)
- Play nice with my Mac for remote streaming? Yes (it's a pipe dream I know!)
- Cable card/DVR incorporation? Maybe. I've got a TiVo HD XL already, but it would be sweet to have everything in one box.
- Faster app loading and customizable home screen...oh yeah and apps! (Why does Netflix take so long to open up anyway?)
- Quieter fan, disc drive, etc? Absolutely. Who needs a jet engine in their living room anyway?
- I'll agree with the standard rack size...even if it's just a case option.
- More USB ports...all these accessories and so few ports. More ports especially on the back! I hate having to charge my headset through the front port of the box...that's just tacky.
I'm sure there's more but it's early...

Many of you guys seem to be thinking of living rooms rather than HT setups.
