Guys,
This is my first post and I'm just looking for advice. The wife gave me clearance to do fill my media room (just in time for football)!! I was hunting around locally and found this setup for sale for $6000. 2 questions
1. Is it worth the price
2. Is this overkill for my first home theater? Would a non audiophile like me be happy spending way less on a simpler system?

Is that a package deal from a custom HT installer? If you're handy, you could probably purchase and install everything yourself and save a bundle - use that savings for some blue ray and hd-dvds, tivo hd, ota antenna (for those foozball broadcasts), etc.

You could go way lower in price and equipment for an entry level setup, unless you're an ultra A/V perfectionist...

Happy hunting!

Thanks for the reply
It is actually used from an individual.
My house is wired for 5.1 already, so I am definitely handy enough!!

Anybody have an opinion on the Bose vb20? I read differing views on its
blu Ray compatibility when playing through it.

What level are the Speakercraft Speakers? They have 3 "trims" if you will.

Personally, I stay away from Bose stuff. I love their products and quality and everything sounds great to me, but in the end, I just want more control than their receivers and systems give you.

1. Is it worth the price

Probably not too far off. Everything is pretty nice stuff. I would be concerned with how it was used and why the dood is dumping all of it.

2. Is this overkill for my first home theater? Would a non audiophile like me be happy spending way less on a simpler system?

This would be overkill for me, and I would describe myself as a non-audiophile as well. I think you could be seriously happy for $4K or less for everything. I could think of a lot of things to do with $2K. Also, if $6K is close to your budget, then this package isn't in your budget. Acquiring the equipment is just the start (or some part of the start) of the project.

If your getting it for under 6 grand go for it sounds like a decent setup, ask lots of questions though like why you getting rid of it all and go for it and have fun.

Yeah, I was trying to get out for $6000 with seating. I think I would be better off finding someing for about $4000.

Is anyone familair with the speakers at Best Buy? My friend works there and said I could use his discount. Just not sure where to start!!

It's a nice system, but I can't answer whether it is overkill for you or not. I can tell you, if it is in good condition and the speakercraft speakers are not the cheapest, it's a fair deal. Here are the street prices I've found for that equipment new:

Optoma HD-80- $2,500
Denon AVR3808CI- $900
Toshiba HD-DVD Player- $100
Panasonic DMP BD10A Blu-Ray Player- $400
Monster Power HTS 1600 Home Theater Power Center- $200
Logitech Harmony 890 remote System- $150
Draper Onyx 120" Screen with black felt frame- $900
4 Flush Mount wall speakers - Speaker Craft 6"- ranges from $150 ea to $1000+ ea
1 Martin Logan Dynamo Sub- $500
1 Martin Logan Vignette Center Channel- $500
2 Martin Logan Towers and Center channel - Montage- $700 for the pair

Are they movies you like? That's only 20 movies, so that may or may not tip the scale for me personally. For me personally, I would be concerned with the bigger picture and whether this equipment matched up with my goals and budget for the room.

Best buy offers Klipsch... the synergy series... they are good for the price. Magnolia stores offer more "up scale" brands, but still nothing like some of the people here have bought.

I had the Klipsch SF-2s and they were great for the price, recently upgraded to the Reference line. I would also look at online brands like Acxiom and HSU... it is tough because you can't hear before you buy, but I have heard nothing but great reviews on them... and they have a good return policy. (I have an HSU sub and it is SWEET).

This is definately a fun "problem" to have... enjoy the process!!! I wouldn't buy something just because it is a package and is worth more on the streets... especially if you aren't happy with it, or could be happy with less.

If it was me I'd try to tell him to leave out the panasonic bd10 and hd dvd player. Reason being is that you can get the current panasonic bluray blayer (bd60) for around $200 at costco now, and HD dvd well it's pretty much a dead format now.

Other that that it seems like pretty good gear, for the price though I can't comment since I don't know what street prices are for them. As for overkill, well to me there is no such thing as overkill only the wondering of what ifs...what if I went with a bigger/better speaker? or what if I want to add another sub?...which then leads to upgradeitis...enjoy the ride:)
