Word is Warner went back for additional restoration since the last DVD master. If this is a Warner release in the UK, it is likely from restored elements. It is also likely there will be a US release at the same time, just not announced as yet.

Oh definitely agree. I love the DVD--it is amazing looking.

I expect the Blu-Ray to be spectacular.

The restored DVD was DVNR'd to death. MASSIVE amounts were applied and Warner knows that by today's standards, it would be a disaster in High Def, so I hope to God they went back and started from scratch.

Yes, the DVD is OK. It's 480i so you can deal with the loss in detail because DVD sucks. But Lord have mercy if the BD comes from the same master.

The DVD looked really good, so I will assume the Blu-ray will be amazing.

Yeah, I guess I didn't catch the DNR, because it was SD-DVD. I guess my eyes are much more sensitive to DNR on Blu-ray.

Did anyone else have the hots for Eva Marie Saint in this movie? I'm 25 and I was like that is the type of woman I would love to meet. I can't stand the women in my generation.

Looks good to me.

Are you sure it wasn't the just the way they filmed Cary Grant-Eva Marie Saint?

I would assume, they would use nice optical filters to flatter the skin tones of the stars.

Besides, if it's too detailed---we could obviously tell that the Mount Rushmore sequence was a matte painting! :)

I've got the remastered versions of this and Rear Window. Both are phenomenal renditions...even upscaled! If the BD is better...I'm in for any Hitchcock classic.

But Lord have mercy if the BD comes from the same master. It can't come from the same master. Lowry Digital's remaster was in standard-def only.

The view from the top was. The carvings are actually in the middle of the mountain.

I was obsessed with the film and visited Mount Rushmore with my parents in 1967 and spoke to some of the rangers who were around when the film was filmed eight years previously. At no point were the cameras on the mountain- everything came from telephoto shots on the ground. The scene with Eva Marie Saint fleeing in the car was cheated- you can't see the mountain from the parking lot. And the scene in the cafeteria was filmed in the actual cafeteria. I think they said the crew was in and out within a day, possibly in just a few hours.

OH MY GOD, PEOPLE! The digital restoration is well known to have been overkill, ala Citizen Kane. They just noise reduced everything right out of the picture. At DVD resolution, it isn't a big issue because 480i does not have the resolution to handle fine detail. If Adam is correct about Lowry's work being standard def only, then we are probably OK.

I saw a 35mm print of NbyNW right after viewing the DVD and I was stunned at how the DVD did not resemble the print at all. And the print was in damn fine condition. The reel changes were rough, but otherwise the print was exceptional.

One of my all time favorite films.
I was in Grand Central Station with my mother and sister the day they shot those scenes (I was 10).
There's a scene where Grant walks across the floor, and you can see the main staircase in the distance. They had those velvet ropes set up to guide people in so they wouldn't be in the crowd on the staircase. We were just off to the right and watched.
Yep, I was *almost* in that movie! :D
Waiting (im)patiently for this one and the rest of Hitchcock on Blu.

If Adam is correct about Lowry's work being standard def only, then we are probably OK.Here's a link about that, by the way.

From an interview with John Lowry for Sound and Vision (http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/features/701/creating-the-video-future.html?print_page=y):

We started out working at standard-definition on films like North by Northwest, Now Voyager, and Citizen Kane.

[...and further down...]

The detail in Casablanca was much more striking than on North by Northwest. Was this due to different scanning resolutions?
We did Casablanca at 2K. That led to a significantly better result than North by Northwest, which was done at standard-definition .

For a couple of years already, WB has said this would be released in the U.S. in 2009 for a 50th anniversary edition.

If they don't, I will order it from the UK (along with a Region B Blu-ray player if necessary!).

:DThat is called a DIE HARD FAN! Great! Hopefully it is region free so we can all import it in case?;)

Oh yea ,oh yea !!!!!!!!!!!!

No doubt the DVD was polished pretty badly but being SD it made little difference.

Looking foward with great hope this will be done right. Just the thought of the opening music makes me excited with anticipation.

Let's hope when it's released in the US it's not in the stupid "book" packaging.

Why studios can't stick with the established standardized packaging I'll never know.

Sounds like only Warner did the new transfer. I've been pretty impressed with Warner's most recent restorations of old movies like HTWWW and Dirty Harry, so this should come out nice too.

That's too bad; another disc I'll have to put in a normal case myself and look for a mocked up cover I can print. :(

One of the all-time great main title sequences.

I've always felt that the 'grid' graphics during the end credits of the Bourne trilogy could be a tribute to NBNW. As the subject matter of the two is pretty similar this is probably not too far fetched.

Yep, I won't need to buy a Region B player after all. However, I did go ahead and buy a new 1080p projector instead of the 720p I was considering, and this movie is one of the reasons. When it comes out, I want to know I have the best display I can fit into my viewing room.
