I am trying to figure out the best way to edit these m2ts files without giving my PC a heart attack...I am hopefully building a new PC in the next few months that should be better.
Anyway...will I have better results using some 3rd party conversion program to convert these m2ts files to an uncompressed avi file and them bring them into my editing software? I own Premiere CS4 and Pinnacle Studion 12 Ultimate.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

A little converter tip: I convert all the files from my HD camcorder's for editing on my PC with a free converter called "Format Factory", just thought I would mention that converter in case you were looking for one, and I have tried them all,, Prism, AVS4U, Any, and a bunch of others.
Format Factory is the fastest and does the best converting of any of them and my PC does not crash when editing the converted files.

Thanks for the info!
Could you please tell me what format you convert to and gave the best results?

That's what I do. I use Cyberlink PowerDirector 7. It can take the files that I create in my Canon HG10 and make a movie of them without first having to convert the files to some other format which results in some loss of quality. Direct from the camcorder to the finished video in one step. I generally upload my movies to Motionbox and they can accept m2ts files for upload so when I render a movie, I go from m2ts to m2ts.
Here is one:
