Hi to all !!

My Loewe Calida 32" just shut itself off last night and had that electronic smell that something burned. I like this TV great picture for what it is. It is about 8-9 years old. Local guy says he will fix for $285 plus parts. Is this worth fixing.

I'm confused about whether or not it is worth it to fix. I can afford and justify the $285 but if it turns out to be $600-900 not sure that would make sense.

Any thoughts, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thank you ahead of time.

Loewe Calida? never heard of that brand....but i assume its a crt tube tv....even if its an lcd i would have to say no way is it worth fixing unless u can do it for well under $100....open it up yourself and see if u can find a burned diode, power resistor or similar part...replacing it would probably be ez if u can solder .....and if youre lucky that would be the total fix needed.....

and watch your local craigslist postings....they a have a 'free' section and many people are giving away decent 'still working well' tv's after they get new plasmas or lcd's.....u might get lucky there....

You might want to look at some of the "new toys" in the store. And then decide. Sometimes people want a broken set to repair. I'd expect you will like a Plasma TV but not LCD, if you really liked your Loewe. Your repair bill will probably be 400 or less, really depends on which part it needs. Some parts are cheap. Fixing it yourself is valid if you like an electronic project and get a service manual.
