CNN's got HD cameras on location and in the room. They're also using a wide shot of the committee room that is in HD. I assume that's the pool feed.

View Full Version : Sotomayor Confirmation Hearings on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC URFloorMatt 07-13-09, 07:41 AM CNN's got HD cameras on location and in the room. They're also using a wide shot of the committee room that is in HD. I assume that's the pool feed. SJKurtzke 07-13-09, 10:28 AM Oh CNN..yet another case of having HD cameras on almost every shot while masking it all in 4:3 SD for no real reason URFloorMatt 07-13-09, 12:23 PM Well, there's a reason: they still haven't upgraded the infrastructure in Washington or Atlanta to bring HD, which makes you wonder who's making the decisions at CNN. If you're going to run your coverage out of Washington, deploying your limited supply of HD cameras was a completely wasted investment. If you want to do HD remotes for the hearings, then you should've had your coverage broadcast out of your HD capable facilities in New York. I really don't see any reason why CNN would want to broadcast it's coverage out of The Situation Room studio. It is a cramped and, frankly, ugly set, and CNN looks pretty bush league next to Fox News right now (mostly due to everyone hunched around that table fiddling with their laptops). I'm being reminded why I started watching more MSNBC. It's just too bad Verizon doesn't carry MSNBC in HD. SJKurtzke 07-13-09, 12:40 PM It really is sad that we've seen next to no progress from CNN on the HD front for such a long time. You begin to wonder how hard it really is with budget-strapped MSNBC can manage to make an HD-capable studio that doesn't feel cramped like TSR--in a limited space like 30 Rock. They need to invest in some major overhauls to both DC and Atlanta--they both look so dated in comparison to the competition right now and TSR isn't helping the claustrophobia feeling with the garish pillar bars and overload on graphics URFloorMatt 07-13-09, 01:00 PM The weirdest thing to me is that Fox News has been in the business for much less time than CNN, and yet they got better real estate closer to the Capitol with more space for a studio? At least Fox's view of the Capitol isn't blighted in the foreground by Union Station's enormous parking garage. Granted, CNN's Washington studio is light years better than NBC's ancient facilities at WRC-TV miles and miles from any major DC landmark. But then again, MSNBC wasn't stupid enough to run its coverage out of those Washington facilities. And even then, Hardball hasn't broadcast out of the Washington bureau in over two weeks now, and I bet when Matthews finally gets back to Washington he's broadcasting in HD too. fredfa 07-13-09, 04:19 PM Why would CNN want to upgrade its facilities in Atlanta or Washington HD in any kind of timely manner? I mean how much actual news comes from those locations? And those hacks at Fox News can't mount any real competition, can they? Great thinking, CNN. Way to squander what once seemed like an insurmountable lead. The network is the poster child for how a company run by committee can become so totally dysfunctional it can't adapt to a changing market with any speed at all. Ted Turner must not be amused at how they have screwed up his legacy. Now Ted Turner vs. Roger Ailes would have been truly fun to watch. And the viewers would have been the winners. Skipdrive 07-13-09, 04:34 PM Perhaps CNN feels it's more limited resources - being so far behind in the ratings n'all - are better placed and its viewers better served by investing in more overseas bureaus, more real reporters in the field, and a greater dedication to actual newsgathering than it's far higher-rated "fair & balanced" competitor...? After all, when a major newsworthy event breaks, perhaps people tune into CNN for the best pure reporting (this is what the ratings spikes indicate, no?), not necessarily to see a pretty HD studio. Just a thought... URFloorMatt 07-13-09, 11:17 PM Granted, CNN's Washington studio is light years better than NBC's ancient facilities at WRC-TV miles and miles from any major DC landmark. And even then, Hardball hasn't broadcast out of the Washington bureau in over two weeks now, and I bet when Matthews finally gets back to Washington he's broadcasting in HD too. It turns out this was partly wrong. MSNBC's coverage did originate in Washington, but MSNBC rolled out it's brand new HD studio in Washington today, so I didn't notice. http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/msnbc/msnbc_debuts_new_hd_studio_in_washington_121383.asp Imagine that, eh CNN? Timing the opening of a new studio with a major news event. Every program on MSNBC is now HD save for most of their documentaries and reairings of Meet the Press. CNN, meanwhile, airs nothing but SD coverage from 9am until 7pm during the weekdays. I'm sure glad they invested in HD remotes for those one-minute reports every other day from the Pentagon. thebland 07-14-09, 07:05 AM What is CNN's abhorrence to true 1.78 HD? Even the far in the last place MSNBC is is using true Hi Def! |
