So framing starts tomorrow. I will be posting pictures daily this week.

PLEASE if you see something done wrong tell me. I've got the guys here for 2 weeks. I don't know much about construction. Ok well maybe a little but please let me know if you want a close up picture, if you think something is wrong etc.

I look forward to getting through this next month and then it's showtime and NFL time ;)

So bd, where are you located and what's the story behind the name 'ammo dump'?

Live just outside of Toronto, Ontario. The Ammo dump comes from having to relocate all of my gun safes to accommodate the theater.

well you've come to the right place.
Lots of experienced eyes will check it out.
Just post progress photos often and you'll get plenty of comments.

I was working out the Oakville area for a couple of years...

Some very nice residential areas in that Burlington/Oakville stretch of the QEW.

I did my trade schooling in Stoney Creek. I can't say that I miss that drive... lol...especially on the bike when crossing the Skyway.

Look forward to following your build.

Looking good. For my own education - how do know if you should have a vapor barrier. Is there any concern with trapping moisture between that vapor barrier and the concrete?

Ya got some good insulation for the theater area. Can't wait to get the screen up!!

Tomorrow will be finishing the frame, pot lights and electrical maybe insulation depending how fast we move.

...really..?

Pot light = Can light

bdoyle13: Only comment I'll make is based on your method for the wiring entering the boxes. I suggest...(seeing as you have a good deal of extra within the boxes themselves) that you pull back a little out of the box, like you did for the yellow 20A circuit. It won't make a difference now, and may never will, but I can say having that little bit of slack that you can pull back into the box if repairs are needed, is worth the extra few moments of effort.

I'm assuming nobody sees anything wrong so far?

i do.. being in the same geographical area (Brampton for me) I can tell you a few code violations already and some bad idea's.

1. Steel bottom plate, big no no. that sucker will rust in 1 year's time. ATLEAST put a sill gasket underneath it. It's 4-6" wide foam roll that seperates concrete and whatever. Best case, use this foam and Pressure Treated 2x4 for the bottom plate.

2. That speaker wire is NOT in-wall rated. If it catches fire your insurance company could dismiss your claim.

3. That bag insulation on the wall should come down and it be PROPERLY insulated like an above ground wall. Code is ashphalt paper on the wall, pink fibreglass on all exterior walls and 4mil vapour barrier over it all, taped and sealed all around. Another method of insulating can be seen in my build thread (see signature below).

looks good though..

How can you tell the speaker wire is not in wall rated? I've never heard of speaker wire catching fire..?

It's not bag insulation. The wall is insulated 4 feet off the ground with a vapour barrier covering it. It passed code 2 years ago when the house was built. Why would there be a problem with it?

Thanks for the info looking forward to answers.

I believe that it's properly insulated for an unfinished area. Standard building practices in Ontario seems to have the insulation only covering the foundation wall down to the frost line.

Once the area is "rezoned" as finished living space, the requirements change.

Because in-wall rated wire has a PVC jacket on it. It would look more like Cat5e wiring instead of that clear speaker wire. Well, if a fire starts somewhere, the speaker wire catches and it spreads like crazy on the speaker wire, your insurance might not be valid. Wire is cheap (check out http://www.monoprice.com)

that IS a bag insulation. it pass 2 years ago as an UNFINISHED basement. if you insulate infront of it and vapour barrier the whole wall you will get a double VB situation and get moisture. It's also the cheapest, crappiest method. you should tare it all out (except the white spray foam in the joist cavaties) and insulate using the roxul you have, cover the whole thing with plastic and you're good.

my words of advice. STOP. continue reading on building practices (this might not be the right site for you for basic DIY) before you go further.

Correct. once it becomes finished space you must insulate the full height. and this cannot be properly done w/o tearing down the diaper builders call insulation put on basement walls in ontario

take note how thick it is in the middle. now go to 2-3" from the bottom and check. thin as hell, how do you expect that to insulate?

also it's not very well sealed to the wall is it? moist air will get up there, it will find a cold spot on the wall near the top and condense, turning into water and eventually creating mould.

Thanks Mike P, although I'm not tearing it all down to insulate the last 4 feet. Today I finished most of the drywall.

I'm not worried about fire as the insulation I got is sound prrof and fire prrof. I watched a demo where the guy help a blow torch to the insulation I've put in the ceiling and it didn't go up. Plus as of last nigt I would have had to start tearing down drywall on the ceiling to re-wire.

It may not be exactly to code and I thank-you for trying to stop me but it's already drywalled. I'm not loosing a days work now.

I'm not insulating in front of the vapour barrier.

I've done the entire ceiling in a non flamable and sound proof(hopefully) insulation. I'm not worried about heat down there as it stays pretty warm in the winter already and I"m laying carpet.

Beerparty,

I've changed the layout. I haven't scanned one into the comp yet as I am to tired ;) I will see if I can get one up next week when I have a few days off from the basement.

"PLEASE PLEASE if you see something done wrong tell me. I've got the guys here for 2 weeks. I know jack **** about construction. Ok well maybe a little but please let me know if you want a close up picture, if you think something is wrong etc."

I've seen a lot of people on this forum start threads asking for help and then as soon as they receive it, from very intelligent people, they proceed to argue and disregard that sound advise.

I'm not sure what causes it...stubborness...a need to jump the gun out of impatience and then a lack of willingness to fix errors? I don't know.

In any case...you've made some mistakes. Another one is believing that safe'n'sound is "sound proof". That's been proven to be crap. I would recommend not planning on an expensive sound system, least ways being able to turn it up.

The people on this forum that have very successful builds are the ones to take things slow. The ones that ask a question and then wait for the flow of answers before moving ahead. Many times there is a concensus on which way to go and not listening to that mass agreement would seem crazy to me.

You will likely lose interest in your thread from some very key players if you continue on that path.

That said I hope that the build continues to meet your satisfaction and you do indeed enjoy the end result. :)

I've actually done some experimenting with both in-wall rated and unrated speaker cable (Scraps) and my blow torch. I couldn't tell the difference in the way they burned and neither propagated flame longitudinally "like crazy".

IMHO a bigger problem I've seen here in the basements turned theaters is the lack of adherence to fire-stopping code. Wall cavities communication with ceiling joist spaces and soffits framed before the walls and ceiling are drywalled are the common mistakes which will allow fires to spread faster.

Whoa, slow down a little Jd,

I do appriciate any advice I get, but when the framing is up and the drywall already being put in place you can't expect me to throw away $1,000 in wood another $300 in metal and some drywall and start over from scratch.

Some people may think Safe 'n sound is "crap" as ou say but my brother did his basement with it and I think it's great on the noise.

Why would I not invest in an expensive sound system? I've alrady purchased it anyways. The house is over 2100sq/ft it will be 3000 when the basement is done. It's only my wife and I so I can crank up the stereo / HT whenever. I already make the house shake with my living room system.

You seem to be upset that I didn't rip up the framing. I'm sorry if it's pissed you off but I can't stop everything on stage 4 and go back to stage 1.

MikeP and Jd,

I think the Safe 'n sound insultaion is a preference for some and some don't like it. So no big deal. I've read many positive reviews on the material.
I've done the entire ceiling with it so it should be quite enough. My brother did only the area over the theater area and it is still fine. However I think he should have done the entire thing as some sound does spill out.

With regards to the steel framing on the floor. The contractor advises it is galvanized metal framing. He also advises that if it rusts 20 years he'll come back and replace it. The only concern with rusting would be if there is a flood.

So is the metal framing a prference over wood?

On the contrary, I'm not mad at you at all. I simply think if you began a thread for advice that you should not have moved to stage four before you had taken all the advice for stage one. You're right, it is too late now. This is a very valuable spot to learn and get advice...there are very smart and talented individuals that spend a lot of time on this thread helping people. The unfortunate thing is that when OP's begin to make their own calls on everything they lose the original support they could have had.

By 'crap' I mean that the marketing scheme for Safe'N'Sound is crap. It's been proven that it does very little beyond the regular pink in terms of isolation. It's just a ploy to make you spend more money. Any insulation in the ceiling is going to help (depending on your standards). Most people don't have any insulation in the floor joists, and that's likely the reason you notice a difference at your brothers.

The reason I said not to invest in an expensive system is because it is generally viewed as pointless to have an expensive system and not take the proper steps to isolate and treat the sound in a room. "Shaking the house" is not the idea for those with high taste in audio.

Again not ticked off at you, but I don't see the point in these threads that pop up asking for help and then jump the gun on things. Like the bottom plates, like the wall insulation, like the speaker wire, like the safe'n'sound. The code recommendations really should not be overlooked, however, and your contractor should know better...and as such he should have to fix those things at his expense.

I will lay off on the critique though - because it does sound like you are looking more for a regular room with a big screen than what many people here look at as a dedicated theatre. If you aren't an audiophile and are more of a picture guy - that's fine. Each to his own.

After doing some searching on AVS I've found some theaters are done completely with metal framing and no wood studs.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1059029&highlight=

There are 3 pages of responses and not one person complained about the metal framing.

Don't get me wrong I do want advice but I'm talking about about things like: Holy **** positive and negative can't touch your gonna blow your house up!:eek:

If it is a preference please let me know that it is your preference or you would recomend something. Scaring the **** out of me saying the metal will rust out in one year is a little crazy.

bdoyle13
07-23-09, 10:42 AM
Thanks Jd,

Just read your response as I typed the last one.

Ya it's not a dedicated home theater ie: enclosed theater only.

It is a long room with a bar at one end and screen at the other. I though I had posted that in this thread but it may have been in the design thread Big M was helping me with.

I do appriciate the advice 100% The only problem is I can't wait days in between posts to have the contractor start up again. If I could I would but he's on a schedule so I'm kind of stuck. That's why I'm doing daily pictures in hopes that if something major is F'ed up that I can call him on it.

THANKS

THANKS

No worries then. It must have been in the other thread.

I'm understanding the thing with the contractor - it can be much easier for us that DIY to twiddle our thumbs. Of course the guy I got to help with my family room only showed up 1/4 of the time, so it didn't matter with him either. Then I fired him and did the rest myself anyway, lol.

1/4 of the time? Nice I'd fire him to.

These guys have been great, good references and they do all the Home Depot and RONA installs for my area.

They've been here everyday at 8am and don't stop till 4:30pm I don't know when the eat. Enough computer this morning I'm supposed to be helping. ;)

Off to the basement.

Just outside of Hamilton.
With regards to the steel framing on the floor. The contractor advises it is galvanized metal framing. He also advises that if it rusts 20 years he'll come back and replace it. The only concern with rusting would be if there is a flood.

So is the metal framing a prference over wood?

citing a DIY home theatre forum is not the best place to get sound construction advice IMO. Especially when you consider geographical differences.

http://forum.canadianwoodworking.com/showthread.php?t=24081

simple google search will reveal that in our climate, its not a good idea to have steel or non-PT lumber in direct contact with concrete. ESPECIALLY new concrete which is still curing. I have steel in my basement for my bulkheads simply because its straigher.

For the record, i have no problem w/ Roxul SnS. I actually lined my entire ceiling with it, and I'm in a townhouse! :)

Make sure you get that in writing from your contractor about the replacement in 20 years (my guess would be less than 5 though). Also I can tell there is no building permit (and thats ok), but they would have told you the same things as I am now.

I think it also has something to do with the fumes. Code requires CL2 rated wiring in my area, for the price, i'll stick with it.

Can I stuff it around the main HVAC area? I didn't put any on top of the main one and I have enough to go from the outer wall to the furnace. Is this Ok to do?

you might want to consider using the double hook style (see my thread) for strength. you will be putting A LOT of weight on those. They are available at Lowes for sure (thats where i got mine) and probably Home Depot and Rona.

Thanks Mike I will check out your thread now.

EDIT::::

Maybe I missed it but do you have a close up of your rack stuff?

If you mean by double hook, a hook in one slot and then about 2 down another hook in on the same arm?

If so that's what I'm using as well. If not I need to know. Thanks

I missed this before. There is generally nothing wrong with using metal framing in contact with concrete. IT is galvanized to resist corrosion. you can even get framing made for wet areas that has an extra thick galvanizing on it. I have used it to build a commercial car wash. Pretty much 95% of all commercial buildings use metal framing and it is always in direct contact with the cocrete, even in basements.

The reason for not allowing standard cables in a wall does much more to do with fumes in a fire rather if they burst into flames more easily. When normal cables burn they can release poisonous fumes and melt away, leaving gaps for hot gasses to move to another stud bay or area. The CL2 cables have thinner jackets that met less and release release less fumes. Plenum rated cables are even less still. Most likely you will be fine with standard speaker cable in the wall since you will not have a fire, but you are more at risk for issues if you do have a fire so it is always best to do it right from the beginning. I agree that many times, people do not use fire caulk on their holes and that can help quite a bit in a fire. The Fire Caulk is available in most home improvement stores for $5 a tube.

As far as insulation, defnitely do not do a double vapor barrier, but there is nothing wrong with removing the existing vapor barrier and then placing insulation up the entire wall, including the concrete and covering that with a vapor barrier. In fact, this will help get better insulation in the previously insulated areas due to covering any bad areas or gaps. This is the same principal as rolling out batts perpendicular to the attic joists after installing batts in the joist bays. It works even better than one set of batts in the bays, but double the thickness. As long as the vapor barrier is as close as possible to the habitable area you should be fine.

Of course, you or your contractor should always talk to your local building official to be sure about anything you do.

It has nothing to do with your tests.
If perhaps one does have a fire in your home, and non rated wire (either speaker or otherwise), is in place, this gives the insurance companies the leverage to not pay for anything since the negligence was on the homeowner. If you needed a permit to finish your basement, then that means you would have needed inspections and the inspector would have, most likely, told you or the contractor to remove all the non in-wall rated wire.

It is very inexpensive to do this change while you could have, but it can still be accomplished cheaply before you paint. My advise would be to do this so everything is up to code.

As for the insulation, being Canadian, I would have removed the insulation from where it was, or removing the existing vapor barrier, and placing it between the studs and placing new vapor barrier between the studs and drywall. Coating the concrete foundation with a moisture proof material would also prevent possible water or moisture from making its way inside behind the wall where mold grows like wildfire. This would also give you better R factor and noise stoppage.
Remember, nothing stops noise like mass.
In the least, I would decouple the subwoofer from the floor so the vibrations do not go throughout the house and adjacent nieghbors.

Thanks for the advice guys. There is deffinitely not 2 vapour barriers. My contractor had advised me about this as well with regards to moisture and mold.

Ok, I got 3 hours sleep but all of the construction is done. I have only the screen wall and ceiling to Prime. Everything else is primed and ready to go.

I'll probably prime the last wall and ceiling on Saturday. I did them at seperate times 'cause I'm using a regular prmier on the walls but for the screen wall and the ceiling I'm using a primer with a grey tinge as I was reading that this is better when painting the area black.

Schedule, hopefully.

Bar construction starts on Sunday.

Paint August 13/14

Equipment and screen install and calibration August 16/17

Carpet delivery and install August 21

Baseboards Installed and Couch Delivery August 22

August 23 and on......who knows touch up and finalize.

Here's today's shots. It's a little picture heavy today but now that all the garbage is cleaned up and I moved the work out gear out of the way.

Next update will probably be Tues/Wed next week when there is more progress on the bar.

Why would you have to tear down the drywall?
Did you staple the speaker wire? If you did, you shouldn't have.
If not, then using the existing speaker wire to pull new rated wire should be easy.

Just because the insulation can't catch fire, doesn't mean everything else will not.
Remember, wire is a conductor for heat.
A rated wire and jacket will resist the burning for a longer period of time than a non rated wire and jacket. If you have a fire, the wire will spread the fire faster and give the occupants less time to get out. There are building codes for a reason, not following them leaves you liable for your own family, home and possessions.

Don't be stupid and think that it will never happen to you, it can happen to anyone. I wouldn't put my own family at risk for 1 day of work.

Remember what Mike Holmes says, "do it right the first time".

bdoyle13
08-06-09, 07:49 PM
I didn't staple it down so I guess I could pull it through. It's certainly something I can look at doing even in a month or two when I get another $200.

I don't think things will never happen to me. Trust me I work in front line emergency service and I know what can happen.

where did you buy the mouldings and the Cabinets for the bar?

bdoyle13

The cabinets are base cabinets from Ikea.

All of the mouldings are from Home Depot, Rona, Lowes and a custom framing shop near Toronto. It took quite a while to get all the mouldings together but I think it's paying off. I'll be posting more photos tomorrow.

Hopefully we should be staining the bar on Thursday/Friday and a final coat Saturday for the top of the bar.

Wow--looks great. My favorite part is the drum set in the alcove. My room doubles (when it is finally finished) as a jam/recording room as well. Very nice work.

Congrats! Looks fantastic!! I just went back through the thread again to see what the panel was on the left of your rack, great idea for an access panel for hook ups and wiring!

Is that Foo Fighters live at Arrow Hall?

This is a kick a$$ space my friend. I really like how the bar and the above storage turned out. It makes me want to re-configure some things with my bar. Great job
