What next?

Of course, companies are getting better and better at copywriting the DVD's we buy so they can't be...well...copied. ;)

I have a couple that I bought that I simply cannot rip. Both have the same problem: in Brasero I get a read error; in k9copy, I choose the largest titleset and there are several titles under it with different data and all about the same size. Well, it's doesn't matter which one I pick, k9copy get's a little ways into it and freezes up. I simply cannot rip these discs...at least not with my current knowledge. Which is why I throw myself at the feet of the REAL brains here at AVS Forum. :)

What say y'all. I'd really like to get these things ripping and off the shelf.

Side question: how do I install a newer version of Handbrake (don't worry, Tux. I'm still playing with Mandriva but not there yet. ;) ) . I know I have to compile it, but how? Are there any options to ./configure? I'm still new to all of this and haven't really had much time to play with it. Thanks!

Have you tried Ogmrip? It is in the Ubuntu repos's, not sure about Mandriva.

I have not tried that. What can it do that K9copy and Brasero cannot? Can it get around the copyright stuff better?

Side question: how do I install a newer version of Handbrake (don't worry, Tux. I'm still playing with Mandriva but not there yet. ;) ) . I know I have to compile it, but how? Are there any options to ./configure? I'm still new to all of this and haven't really had much time to play with it. Thanks!

It's a bit old, but if you scroll down through the comments you will see the one about installing the gstreamer-plugins package (a dependency).

If it doesn't work, you are likely missing more dependencies, so if you post the make errors here, we can help you get those installed.

I still use the free version of DVDFab HD Decryptor running under WINE because it does the best job of handling all the Sony copy protection schemes.

Paying for a copy of AnyDVD is the only thing that works better than DVDFab, but using AnyDVD means running a real version Windows (I doubt it even work with a VM).

I'll try that. If I have to, I do still have a laptop running Winduz. I can always rip, then transfer.

AnyDVD works in a VM. I used the free version in XP in virtualbox before it expired. Works great for blu-rays...I'll prolly buy a copy.

I have been running the current SVN HandBrake for the last few weeks. I built a new quad core machine, installed i386 9.04 Ubuntu and then had issues running (GTK problems/incompatibilities) the deb binary for 8.04. So instead of wasting time figuring that out I decided just to build the SVN source (have updated and rebuilt a few times just for fun).

See here (http://handbrake.fr/?article=development) to get started and this wiki page (http://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/CompileGuide) for compiling tips. Not sure how upto date that page is but it will get you started. I didn't use it...I just "followed my nose" to get it to compile. Which generally meant installing library dev packages for Ubuntu to make configure happy.

I did not use any specific arguments to configure, the defaults were fine by me. Of course YMMV. It's been fairly stable but I have had a few glitches. To be expected since it's a SVN checkout.

The DVDfab link above used to list "Wine" as a "Supported OS". While it doesn't appear to affect functionality under Wine based on DVDFab 6.x, the "Wine" omission is worrisome- without DVDFab, we would be dead in the water- whether you run Windows or Linux.

Philosophically, I don't believe in paying for the right to backup/transcode my property, nor fueling this DRM cold war with money to either side (those enforcing/creating DRM and those breaking DRM).

Avidemux and Handbrake are great free transcoding tools, but simply nothing can touch DVDFab for the DVD ripping part.

So, the free (beer) DVDFab Decrypter has been the savior since it came out.

It's really a sad state of affairs when such a critical media PC function is tied up with one app/company- I don't count AnyDVD due to it's Win-only, rootkit-like design and costs (no, malware ridden warez doesn't count). Unfortunately, it (currently) appears to take a paid commercial entity to keep up with the DRM /copy protection game in a timely fashion :(

BTW, even after the DVDFab "trial" period of 30 days, it will still work forever as a full DVD disc ripper- the transcoding, disc splitting, shrinking and BD functions are disabled, but you can still rip the full VIDEO_TS folder from a DVD to hard disk.

Just use the classic DVD Shrink under Wine, or k9copy, to shrink/transcode and/or re-author the ripped VIDEO_TS folder if needed.

If you guys are talking about Sony DVDs w/ ARccOS protection, you can rip them under Linux, using VLC.

So I had to reload Ubuntu again because I finally got my 1TB Hard drive and am ready to start ripping movies again. I stopped for a long time because my poor 80gb was full. I have plenty of room now.

I am currently running Ununtu 9.04. I didn't change versions.

At any rate, I have K9copy installed and the latest DVDFab running under Wine. BOTH programs crash when trying to rip a DVD. I have tried multiple DVDs with no success. I ran k9copy from a terminal and the error I got was simply "k9copy is crashing"

Yes I can. I didn't try with Xine, but I did try with XBMC and it plays fine. :confused:

Could a change in filesystem screw it up? The last time it was working, I was using the ext3 filesystem but after reading the "Filesystem: does it really matter" thread here, I chose to use the JFS filesystem on this install of Ubuntu.

That is the only thing different between this install and the last one that worked.

Only the full disk option of DVDFab works well in Linux, the other options will crash under Wine, that's well known.

I found the problem. I failed to install libdvdcss2. I got that installed and all is well. :D

*facepalm*

I'm glad to say I have to correct myself, I just tried the latest DVDfab 6.1.2.5 and in this version the "Main Movie" option doesn't crash anymore in Linux!

So now there is no need anymore to do a "Full disc" back-up if all you want is the main movie.
