I am starting to think about speakers for upcoming build. While I will need all new speakers for 7.1 setup, I am planning on building the sides and rears into columns. Column depth will be about 5". Any recommendations on speakers that could be used? (keeping in mind that I will need to match L-C-R)
(Also looking for threads on how to best build speakers into columns for best acoustics).
Thanks!

Depends on your budget but I use Axiom audio ... the surround speakers ( QS4 & QS8 ) are 6" deep

Thanks Scruffy- appreciate the advice. I am not sure if these would work for my application, as I was thinking more of a single face speaker to mount inside rectangular column face.

Just some food for thought. My column speakers sit partially in the column and partially in a pocket in the wall. That strategy expands the speaker choices.

Do you have a brand of speakers that you like? Do you have a budget? With the column design, do you have some flexibility in size or whether the side walls by the speaker will be open. I've liked several of the columns that have a 3 sided grill cloth insert into them.
For my theater, I will be using paradigm studio speakers. The on wall LCR's up front and the dipole ADP-590 rear. They are just over 6 inches deep and squarish in shape and so would probably fit in a column fairly well.
You may also wish to consider placing in-wall speakers in the columns. It seems like more and more quality companies are making them, and they are specifically designed to work built in.
I would think for acoustics that either having the column open on three sides where the speaker is placed or using an in-wall would be best, but obviously people have done it other ways. I just find it a bit confusing that we would give a newbie heck for placing their speakers in a cabinet and then end up doing the same with our rear speakers in a column?

Triad makes some great sounding in walls that will work easily in your situation.

Thanks all. I am trying to avoid cutting any holes in drywall, hence the desire for a shallow self-contained speaker that can be mounted directly in the column vs the wall. Havent really though about cost (although I am more of a "value" type of guy!), Local home theater shop (which carries primarily B&Ws) is recommending Klipsch and an Onkyo Integra amp based on my desire to keep the cost reasonable. They also have a pair of speakers that are 100k, buy that was a bit out of my prices range :)
These are for sides and rears, so I am not sure about how good/powerful they need to be, buy I would like them to be matched to whichever L-C-R I end up getting.

Well 5" is quite limiting hence my suggestion above that fits into 4" of depth. I have their smaller brothers in my columns.
