Dear all,

I'm moving into a new, small, apartment, and am looking to buy floorstanding speakers that can fill a room that is approximately 14 feet deep by 12 feet wide.

The problem is that I can't have any subwoofer, center, or satellite speakers, so I need a pair of floorstanding speakers that can sel sufficiently do a good job in a home theatre setting (mostly for watching movies).

Looking to spend no more than $2,000 for a pair. Was looking at a pair of Paradigm Studio 60s - they look good (very important for my girlfriend) and have received great reviews.

What would you suggest?

Many thanks for your help,
AP

OK...I understand why no Sub or Surround ("Satellite") speakers for an apartment. Mind you, I'm not saying you couldn't do it, just why there might be an issue. But why no Center? A Center is soooo important to movie-watching.

Unfortunately space is very limited. To give you an idea of our constraint, we have a 72" wall, on which to fit 4 entertainment systems units (DVR, PS3, Receiver, Monster Power) and we need at least one media storage cabinet. With these constraints, finding a set-up that looks good is not as easy as I would have hoped (particularly since we want a good looking TV cabinet).

You'll likely get much more of a response (and controversy) if you go here:

You're letting the tail wag the dog my man (or your gf boss you around...lol). I can't imagine you can't find a cabinet that will house 4 pieces of equipment and a Center speaker. Or a Center on top the cabinet, but under the TV (we're just talking a TV, right?). I'd post a picture of one, but I'd have a hard time choosing from the, oh, 1,000 or so that must be out there.

Sigh...you hit the nail on the head. Of the 1,000 pieces out there, probably 1/1000 meet certain asthetic requirements which appear to change at random...

On the other hand, if you guys do end up getting married, she’ll just make you get rid of it and get a new one if you get one she doesn’t like to begin with.

Personally, for cramped rooms, where the seating is pretty much on center, spending the same amount on a pair of mains as you would on mains and a center lead to better sound in my book. If your seating is not too off axis, a good set of mains set up with a phantom center is better than trying to jam three speakers into a less than ideal setup.

Also, if you like the sound of the Paradigms, and they meet the aesthetics requirements, go for it. I don’t think you will find too many people that would claim Paradigms are a bad investment.

I suggest Totem Arro. They are small, sexy, and have very nice sound stage.
