View Full Version : What is the best channel for college football?
I just got my lcd tv, but am wondering for others who have been watching college football. What channel broadcast the best results espn, espn2, comcast sports, cbs, nbc, abc or? Or does cable sometimes have a better broadcast even with their compression issue?
appreciated
coyoteaz 07-26-09, 06:09 PM Whichever one is carrying the team you want to watch. Occasionally you'll run into a lesser quality game on ESPN2 or ESPNU, but even then they're still HD and not really that bad. The only bad non-local games are the #3/#4 games in ABC's regional coverage at 3:30, which weren't HD in the past. ABC has changed its distribution infrastructure since last season, so it's possible that even those will be in HD this year.
In general, the CBS SEC games are considered the HD gold standard. The few games HDNet carries are also very good. After that, the NBC Notre Dame games, ABC & ESPN/ESPN2, and Fox Sports Net games usually all look fine, unless there are technical issues.
machpost 07-27-09, 08:07 AM The few games HDNet carries are also very good.
Are HDNet even carrying any games this season? Lately, they seem to have steered away from carrying major team sporting events, unfortunately.

Even a lot of HD games on ESPN and ABC look bad to me. ESPN and ABC have gone downhill so much that they make NBC look good.
CBS OTA is the best by far, then the Fox channels like Big 10 and FSN (even though it's two channel sound). Hit or miss is CSTV/CBS College Sports.
Of course the above is my opinion. Things differ by region, carrier, display, etc.
steverobertson 07-27-09, 09:40 AM I agree CBS is way ahead of the rest. I think ABC can look good on their night games sometimes but not always.
CBS is good as long as your local station isn't cutting back on power like ours does. As far as cable, Fox Sports Net has the best picture. ESPN doesn't come close to it.
McDonoughDawg 07-27-09, 10:15 AM CBS, without a doubt, how can you beat the SEC?

No doubt SEC football rules and lucky us ESPN has a 15 year deal with them
mx6bfast 07-27-09, 10:46 AM I'll have to answer this 2 ways. Main judgement:
FSN by far. Why? They have a little tiny scorebox in the top left hand corner of the screen. They don't overload us with constant crawls of scores and sound effects. PQ is usually really good too.
2nd is a strange one, Raycom. They have more of a scoreboard up top, but it doesn't go all the way across and doesn't have a checkboard/grey effect in between the scoreboard and top of the screen.
Then FOX, CBS, ABC, ESPN, NBC
Now in terms of PQ:
FSN, ABC, FOX, Raycom, CBS, ESPN, NBC
Our local CBS, NBC, and CW affiliate multicast causing little movement on the screen to turn into a blocky mess. Static shots on CBS are much better, and even if that is what motion scenes looked like they'd be in 2nd. I've seen my local CBS before they started multicasting, and if they weren't. they would definitely get the nod over FSN. Under non-multicasting circumstances I would usually agree CBS would be the best. The Fiesta Bowl on FOX with Boise St/OK was one of the best PQ's I have ever seen for a game. NBC is just horrid.
1) FSN (Fox Sports Net) - Best PQ I've seen
2) Versus - Very good; right up there with FSN
3) Big Ten Network (BTN) - Good
4) CBS - PQ is good but you get a lock of macroblocking
5) ABC - PQ is ok but can be less sharp at times - All ABC games will be in HD this season according to the press release ABC/ESPN released last week.
6) ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPNU - PQ varies from good to ok.
7) NBC is by the worst. Trying to watch a Notre Dame game with all of the macroblocking and other pq issues is not fun.
8) CBS College Sports - Poor; just piss poor.

I'd mostly agree with this one, except here it seems like the ABC games are generally significantly lower quality than the ESPN networks. Don't know if that's just a local (WSB) issue or what.

I think each city is going to look different with the locals based on what the stations are doing with the bavdwidth.
I must agree that FSN national games have the best PQ, and their scoreboard takes up the least amount of screen space.

Here is my list (picture quality):
1. CBS-HD
1. HD Net

7. Raycom-HD
8. ABC-HD
8. Fox-HD
10. ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU-HD
11. NBC-HD
12. CBS College Sports-HD
Overall Presentation:
1. CBS-HD (remains on top b/c of picture quality/overall production quality/5.1 sound)
2. ABC-HD (best overall production other than PQ/sound; best broadcast crew in the industry (pro or college) - Musberger/Herbstreit/Andrews)
3. FSN-HD (great PQ/good broadcast crews (e.g. Dave Lapham)/minimal on-screen graphics)
4. Big Ten-HD (great PQ/production good)
5. ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU-HD (mediocre picture quality/great production)
6. HD-NET (subperb PQ/ minimal on-screen graphics/not much else)
7. Versus-HD (great PQ/ good production)

Then blame your local CBS affiliate, which is most assuredly multicasting (bits for subchannels detract from HD), and your provider Cox, who is most assuredly compressing the already compromised CBS signal.
Anyone who has seen a CBS owned and operated station, which does not multicast (all bits for HD), will attest to their HD image quality. It's among the best available.

Not +1 Ken, +100. Absolutely true. I have heard of 1 gigabit per second bitrates coming out of the truck. Compressing that down to 19.4 mb/sec is painful, but it still looks fantastic. A guy I know who gets to watch the Chicago White Sox/Cubs raw 1 gigabit feed microwaved from the ballparks says the raw feed he gets to see before it gets compressed to 720p makes you want to cry because it's so good!
I WANT MORE 08-02-09, 11:44 AM After that, the NBC Notre Dame games.
I would not have agreed with that prior to whatever they did last year to improve their PQ. I agree that now ND games and Sunday Night Football look very good on D*.:D

Yes, because NBC switched to a different, better network distribution system.
In my area Comcast Plymouth MA
ABC is head and shoulders above with their Saturday Night Game after that CBS is nice, Fox is pretty decent and NBC/Notre Dame is a distance fourth for the non cable networks
ESPN is nice for cable
But ABC is the clear cut winner from my vantage point.
so my overall order would be :
1. ABC
2. CBS
3 ESPN
4, Fox
5. NBC
mikey mo 08-02-09, 05:02 PM CBS, without a doubt, how can you beat the SEC?
Sad but true. My Buckeyes can attest to this. However, Michigan did beat Florida a couple years ago in a bowl. Lloyd Carrs's final game as I recall.
Don't confuse this thread with facts, Ken H!
To me, all the carriers mentioned are good to great as long as they are doing game whose teams I care about in HD. Big10 Net consistently does very, very well IMO. ESPN can vary wildly.
I'd give the nod to CBS, too, but now get to see how they do in a non-O&O town.

Not so for all affiliates. WGNO in New Orleans doesn't have subchannels. However ABC's O&O's are probably a different story

The SEC and other CBS sports generally have very good to excellent PQ over WWL-TV in New Orleans (no subs).

One thing that SEC/ACC fans always seem to dismiss is the inherent home field advantage the southern teams get when playing in bowl games on their turf. Nothing like Miami of Florida getting to play in the "Orange Bowl" for its bowl game. I would like to see some southern teams come up to Michigan or Ohio stadium to play a bowl game for a chnage.

I would love to see cold weather bowl games and I would also like to see games in home stadiums given to teams who have the best record. Some of these netral sites just don't cut it you need to bring some passion into some of these games

That's what the regular season is for. And don't you remember when Florida State went up to Michigan during Desmond Howard's Heisman Trophy year and absolutely beat Michigan? I do.
Also, USC plays the Rose Bowl in the Rose Bowl and they tend to beat most Big 11 teams they play whether it is in the Rose Bowl or in Big 11 country.

They also have a recruiting advantage. Many would rather come down south than go north, just like with bowl games. As a fan of both LSU (two degrees from there) and UF (live there), I would love to see either travel up to play in those venues. Too bad the out of conference games for both teams do not include such a challenge.
CBS looks best to me here in Gainesville on COX.

I love CFB and would love to see some better out of conference games played by the big confrences instead of the cupcakes that a lot of schools play. I think they should have conference challanges like they do in the BB and could rotate it around each year.
Better yet, since they all live and die by the BCS standings, allow any team which accepts a bowl invitation to only schedule non-conference games against teams within ten of it in the previous year's BCS. Allow each team one exception for "traditional" rivalries, or more if the traditional rivalry also would qualify under these BCS-related rules.
This way no one would get to play all cupcakes (one would be the max as a sort of pre-seaon warmup, so they all would be under the same guidelines.
ABCTV99 08-04-09, 07:25 PM Well if we're talking content, CBS would not be high on my list, though their picture is usually pretty good. With all due respect to lcaillo, I just cannot take another season of the Verne Lundquist/Gary Danielson Tim Tebow love fest ("he just makes the world a better place") nonsense. Bite me. (the sad part is Tebow will probably run for President one day and win).
That being said, I like the Herbie/Musberger team on Saturday Nights, I think that's probably the best produced game week in and week out, they tend to keep it clean and simple, just football, but the throw a lot at it.
There is A LOT of HD College Football on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. In some cases 7 days a week and it can be all over the place, though most of the A-Net stuff, to me, is consistently decent, especially on Saturday nights. The FSN regionals to me are a mixed bag. They usually use regional crews, so you get stuff that ranges from really good to really bad. Sometimes really outstanding color, detail and contrast and sometimes its a mess. Versus' stuff looks decent but to me is rather bland an uninspiring. Raycom puts forth a valiant effort, but I cannot overcome that horrible graphics package.
I think some of these arguments need to be a bit compartmentalized though. It might be unfair to compare a CBS or ABC game of the week against a 7 camera Big Ten Network or MTN remote, that might be using students as part-time help.
lcaillo 08-04-09, 07:33 PM Being a Tiger fan living in Gainesville I can understand people getting enough of the Tebow business, but why people seem openly hostile about him puzzles me. He seems to be a genuinely good guy, and that should be celebrated. We hear enough of the degenerates that make the news in sports.

I agree but Gary D is way over the top. "Every SEC regular season game is like a bowl game". Tod Blackledge was much better than Gary b/c Tod was right down the middle. Gary was good when he was on ABC but he is just over the top on CBS. For some reason he has a really strong need to wave the SEC banner every time no matter if he is on the air on on a radio show. The dude is just shameless.
lcaillo 08-05-09, 07:19 AM There is great football in lots of places and it cycles. I did not hear a lot of SEC banner waving in the 1980s, when other than Bama, the conference was not consistently producing many power teams. Back then we had to bear the Irish and Big Ten love fest.

FSU has actually played @ND (twice, 1-1), @tOSU (twice, 2-0), @Michigan St (1-0) and @Michigan (1-1), since 1982, so we do go North of the Mason Dixon.
Now those assclowns from Gainesville, well they are busy playing the likes of Chareston Southern and The Florida School of HVAC repair.

Well, those assclowns do play FSU every year. How has that worked out for the Semis?
Like I said, there is great football in many parts of the country. The dominance of one conference or one team cycles, and in another few years the SEC may be in the toilet. For now they have great football, better than most others. Watch it and enjoy it, or not. I just like to see great games played with class, regardless of where. It would be nice to see teams like LSU and UF challenged out of conference more, but they beat each other up pretty well.

brandonnash 08-06-09, 07:42 AM I always watch notre dame on NBC and until last year the picture quality was great. You must be pumped. I love watching USC football it is very entertaining. I have people ask me all the time who my favorite team is and I always say all of them I just like the sport. I have been partial to FSU over the years though. Living here in the NE is frustrating being a CFB fan as most in the area could care less about the college game in any sport it is all pro around here. I find the NFL on Sunday's to be boring compared to watching games on Saturday to me it is a let down.

Good to see a Seminole with some perspective. I can recall some pretty lame years at LSU, and UF was not much better. I think FSU needs to retire Bowden and move on. He did a great job but sometimes it is just best to step aside and let some fresh younger coaches build a new fire. They have it set up pretty well for the transition. They need to just do it.

I'm sure others would have their own list.
To most of the country...?
That list is one individual's idea of what 'most of the country' is interested in.
Why don't you wait until the ratings for all the games in that period of time are in, and go back and compare the 'games of interest' to the entire list. I'd bet you find major anomalies.
lcaillo 08-07-09, 11:11 PM All I can say is...................
2003 BCS Championship LSU 21, OU 14
2008 BCS Championship UF 24, OU 14
boom, boom...
farmer_joe 08-08-09, 01:37 PM Can't wait for the Kentucky Miami game... Looks to be a good matchup. Kentucky is getting to be a better football program every year it seems - and the basketball program is going to be out of this world this season. Can't wait for these games to hit my farm.
If anyone is interested, Matt Sarz has had TV schedules for the first few weeks of games up on his site. He also has an interesting explanation of how ESPN is attempting to resell rights to certain SEC games to regional broadcasters.
His site is now at: http://mattsarzsports.com/

I doubt it. Most of his games highlighted are the most anticipated games of the 1st week by almost all Pre-Season Magazines/Shows and they will draw the highest ratings.
DNicolasL 08-10-09, 09:17 AM I can't wait for the FSU - Miami game. I wish college football on ESPN looked better though.
Anyways enjoy the season I know I will
I am pumped. I love college football. When I was 11 years old as a Boy Scout I started ushering at University of Minnesota football games. I did this through High School. Then I went to the University of Minnesota and got student tickets for 4 years. When I moved to California I got my Masters degree from USC. I have had USC season tickets now for 9 years. There was a big gap between the two but there is nothing I enjoy more that going to a college football game. My wife feels the same way. Close behind going to the game is watching it on TV.

That is awesome I hope you enjoy the up coming season it should be another great one. I think my dark horse if you want to call that will be OK St I think they are loaded and will give the big boys a run for their money this year
slowbiscuit 08-12-09, 10:05 AM Heh, we're going to find out REAL quick how good Okie State is when UGA comes to town...
To me, the best channel for college football is all of the above.

Yes we will and look forward to that game as well.
You nailed it all the above works for me as well.
CBS has a CFB show on this Saturady at 1 ET I believe the dvr is set to record. I am really looking forward to college gameday starting back up as well
I agree heartily. Over the years it has proven to be the most accurate as far as I have been able to tell.
http://www.lsufootball.net/tvschedule.htm continues to be my favorite schedule website for college football.
Have we heard any word from ABC/ESPN about having more than 2 games in regional coverage available in HD? ABC moved to their new MPEG4 distribution setup, so the obstacle of only have 2 feed locations available is gone.
Who cares about their predictions?
The beauty of college football is that whatever team you care about plays in the most important game -- for you.
And we are finally getting to the point where the majority, maybe even the vast majority, of all college football games are presented in HD.
So no matter if you root for Florida, USC, Ohio State, Oklahoma or Cincinnati -- or a host of other teams -- you are able to be able to see most or all of their games in HD.
I doubt it. Most of his games highlighted are the most anticipated games of the 1st week by almost all Pre-Season Magazines/Shows and they will draw the highest ratings.
steverobertson 08-12-09, 03:01 PM Fred,
No kidding remember the days when CBS was the only HD game all day long and how bad it was to switch to the SD games on ESPN after watching CBS for 3 1/2 hours
Or watching Navy play someone (anyone) on HDNet! :)
chitchatjf 08-12-09, 10:28 PM This is just a guess, but I would assume all ABC affiliates have at least 1 subchannel, limiting its bandwidth; and most have 2. That is why ESPN games look better than ABC.
not in Boston
coyoteaz 08-13-09, 01:00 AM But WCVB converts the 720p ABC feed to 1080i for broadcast, which introduces its own set of problems. IIRC, WEWS Cleveland and KDNL St. Louis are the only 2 top-30 ABC stations to provide a 720p broadcast with no subchannels.

That is very true howver I have to say it looks pretty darn good what little I watch the channel which is mostly news for me.
