Aaaaargh. I have an older Sony XBR hi-def TV which I have been using with a cablecard until now. Comcast has been adding/removing/moving so many channels recently that I decided to switch the cablecard (which doesn't have a decent channel guide) for a STB. Figured the switch would be easy as pie. Boy - was I wrong. Took the box home from our Comcast office - plugged it in using an HDMI cable - and got nothing but fuzz - no signal. After an hour long call to Comcast (reps had never heard of the box I got) - still have nothing but fuzz.

This STB is a brand new RNG 110 (made by Samsung I think) - supposedly the latest and greatest in our area. Now my TV isn't the latest and greatest (it does have hi-def and a single HDMI input - but it is probably at least 5 years old and all that entails) - so I read the online manual for the STB to trouble-shoot compatability problems. The manual was clear as mud (like it didn't say whether I should do this that or the other thing when the TV was on or off). Or perhaps stand on my head when I was trying to make the adjustments.

Of course - Comcast can't get anyone to my house at a time when I'll be around until Friday. In the meantime - any thoughts/suggestions/advice would be appreciated. Robyn

Call Comcast again. Ask (escalate) for a technical supervisor. Explain that you just got a new STB (provided by them) and ask that they "activate" the STB.

Or... stay with the cablecard. Yeah... no channel guides. But, whether you have an external STB or cablecard, they still rearrange channels.

I solved my problem. It was a TV problem. My older Sony has a single HDMI input - but it only works on the Video 6 input. Probably couldn't have figured that out in a couple of years on my own (called Sony and the tech walked me through it). Oh well - all's well that ends well. Robyn

P.S. Sony tech support is great. My TV is over 4 years old and off warranty - but Sony gave me the help I needed.

Hi,

I have a problem with my RNG110 box. Basically, the box doesn't always respond to the box. I have to punch in the keys several times to get response from the box.

It's basically acting like a remote with almost dead batteries. Sometimes it responds, sometimes it doesn't. Very random.

Thinking the battery I got is dead, I tried switching to my own batteries. Doesn't solve the problem. I tried to use my universal remote (Logitech 550) and it still doesn't work... still showing the same symptoms.

I tried switching the box (went to the Comcast office and exchange for a 'new' one). And it's behaving the same way.

Just wondering if anybody else is experiencing the same thing? How do you fix it? Thank you!

Let me guess...

You have an LCD TV. When the TV is on... the remote doesn't work properly for the cable box.

Turn off the TV... and the remote works fine with the cable box.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure what you meant though. I have a Panasonic plasma TV.

So do you mean to turn of the TV, and then switch it on using the remote? I mean.. there's no point if the remote works with the cable box and the TV is turned off right? Sorry.. a bit confused here...

Basically what it's doing is acting like a remote with almost dead battery. You have to punch in the buttons multiple times to get a response from the box (like changing channels, pulling up the guide menu)

Thank you,

Ratman

LCD and plasma TV's have been known to interfere with the IR (infrared) receivers in cableTV boxes.

"TO TEST"... turn off the TV and see if the remote works fine with the cable box. (Hint: you will know because the numbers will change on the front panel of the cable box. ;) )

Place a small piece of paper over the front of the cable box. Then try it. If that is the problem you can solve it by finding the eye on the cable box and placing a very small piece of paper over the eye. Some have solved the problem by turning down the brightness of the TV also.

I've heard thin masking tape (the translucent stuff) works, too. Basically, you're reducing the amount of IR signal that hits the eye of the box, so that the remote's more powerful beam hits while the TV's interference is cut out.

kampret
09-10-09, 06:17 PM
oh ok... I didn't know that.... my box (RNG-110) doesn't display the number on the front panel, but I think it flashes a green light everytime the channel get changed...

The weird part is, I used to have directv box (don't know which model) and I never have such problem... Same with the old comcast box (I forgot which model.. either Motorola DCT5100 or Motorola DCT6200).. Never have IR problems...

Thanks for all the suggestions! I can't wait to go back home to try now :)

Some are more sensitive than others. It seems completely random sometimes when these problems crop up.

kampret
09-10-09, 09:42 PM
Putting a piece of paper in front of the panel works! Thanks everyone...

I still can't believe they would make an HD box that have a chance of interfering with plasma/lcd though.... Clearly, most of the consumers of HD boxes would be using it on plasma/lcd....

Tulpa
09-10-09, 10:58 PM
It's the TV that causes the interference, not the box. They throw off so much light and IR junk it gets the remote's beam lost in the noise. I suppose the box makers could filter their IR ports more, but it's not really their fault, it's the TV makers, who probably don't see it as their problem, either.

kampret
09-11-09, 12:36 AM
Yeah... I can understand your argument...

But the thing is, there are plenty other boxes that have no problems with my TV... Now of course, different TV, different matters... but if there are some companies that manage to avoid the problem... why is this still happening to certain box?

I can understand if if happens to non HD boxes that probably are not going to be used with plasma/LCD... but this is an HD box!! they should be aware that most of the customers would be using LCD/plasma...

anyway.. I guess no point in complaning... it's working, and (in my case) beggars can't be choosers right?

Tulpa
09-11-09, 01:12 AM
Like I said, it's completely random, and when it does happen, both sides say, "Hey, not my problem." The box makers sell to cable companies (in the US), not to customers, so they probably don't get any complaints. The cablecos say, "Hey, it's your TV's fault, go complain to them." Seriously, check the thread Ratman posted. First post has Comcast blaming the TV.

kampret
09-11-09, 11:20 AM
Yeah.. I guess there's no point debating about that now huh? I'm just glad that I come to this forum... Comcast's technical support are practically useless.. they had no idea what's going on.. and when I came to their store, all they suggested to do when I explained the problem was to switch the box..

Just got a new Comcast RNG 110 STB yesterday activated it and it worked fine. Was gone for the day, returned home, poered on the STB and TV and the wife gets a No Signal error. I reboot the STB and now get the Power and Data lights flashing at me, and every ~fifth cycle, all four lights flash in sync...still with no signal to the TV. And the remote no longer works with the STB, but works fine with the TV once I remove the STB (plug cable directly into my Samsung LCD HDTV).

Anyone seen this yet? Comcast "Service Professional" is coming out to the house Tuesday.

My Dad just got the RNG110 and we had a heck of a time getting my Hava box to work with it. Apparently alot of remotes have a hard time controlling this box. I finally was able to get a code on the internet that let me get remote control the box. What a pain.

I get the same interference problems between my Aquos LCD and my Tivo HD... so this issue is not limited to cable set-tops.

re: RNG110

I haven't seen these boxes yet... it looks like they are digital-only, a couple of questions:

1) Do they run cooler than the DCT/DCH Motorola boxes?

2) Are they using the same TV Guide program guide and VOD Navigator that you see on the Comcast Motorola boxes?

Comcast tech says I had a bad box, installed a new one, activated the HD channels and we were good. Then I had to pull the entertainment center apart and move for carpet installation. Reconnected everything (after 3 days) and I have no HD signal, even after calling to have box re-activated.

Tech is schedule to come out on a Saturday, he never shows (this is to be their third visit to our house and the 5th box we've had in the last 6 weeks of new service). Comcast reschedules tech visit for next day - w/o informing me. This tech tells us the RNG 110 STB is NOT an HD box! We get an older school HD box and things finally work. Now I am scared sh|tless to unplug the box to hook up an HTPC with digital tuner card...Comcast sux.

It seems that the new I.R. remote protocol is more sensitive than the older one. The new I.R. protocol works on Motorola DCH, DCX, Comcast branded "RNG", and DTA set top boxes. With the Motorola DCH and DCX, they are still backwards compatable with the older remote protocol.

The dark grey Comcast remote is programmed with the new protocol, and the lighter grey Comcast remote is programmed with the old protocol. I have a DCX-3400 320GB DVR that is supposed to come with a dark grey remote. However the local Comcast center gave me a brand new light grey remote. It works just fine without any issue.

The RNG-110 is manufactured by Pace. It run's I-Guide, but it has the ability to keep the on screen graphics stretched to fill the screen even when on a 720p or 1080i channel. All other HD boxes center the on screen graphics in a 4:3 mode on top of 720p or 1080i content. This means the screen saver function actually WORKS and protects the side 'pillar' area's when outputting an HD video mode.

The RNG-110 has a pretty neat diagnostics dashboard. To get to it, power off the RNG-110 and quickly push the OK/Select button on the remote. If you do that fast enough you will see a blue screen with colorful indicators regarding the signal levels (Green for good, yellow for marginal, red for bad). You can read the on screen instructions to get out of the "Dashboard" and into a big menu full of diagnostic options.

The RNG-110 runs much cooler than the standard Motorola set tops. It has a cable card slot in the left side, and from the top vents you can see the Motorola M-Card inserted inside. This is not user serviceable, it comes with the card by federal mandate that was put into effect on July 2007. The RNG-110 has USB, Firewire, Ethernet, IR, HDMI, Component and Composite ports on it. It's a pretty neat little box. Remarkably small considering it does full HD. They've come a long way since those huge pizza box sized Motorola HD boxes.

You can also fine tune the output resolutions. Power off the box and push menu on the remote. The last channel will come back on the screen along with an overlay box in the upper right corner. You can turn on or off individual resolutions. I usually select YES for all resolutions that the TV is capable of. Selectable options are 1080 passthrough, 1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i. There is also a setting for closed captions and TV aspect Ratio (4:3 or 16:9).

I am using Comcast coax out of the wall to my QAM HDTV. Picking up all the local HD stations and a couple of others. I am considering renting a HD STB w/o DVR. I assume from this thread the RNG 110 is Comcast newest HD box. We have the expanded basic service which according to my Comcast business office is equivalent to Digital Starter. With the RNG 110 will we be able to pick up additional HD stations such as ESPN?

Tulpa

The box should get anything Comcast encrypts on the tier that you end up paying for when all is said and done. Pretty much all of their current boxes should do this, as the home office for your area will tell it what you're subscribing to and what channels you should pick up. Additional HD channels may need you to pony up more cash, but it depends on what they offer.

Comcast just replaced my Motorola DCH3200 with the Pace RNG-110. I have it hooked up via HDMI to my Sony xbr9 lcd tv. Odd thing that occurs is when I change inputs on the tv (i.e. from cable box to dvd player, then back to cable box) there is no signal on input source for cable box. When I turn cable box off then on again I get the signal and it doesn't go off unless I change input sources again. Anyone else with this? Seems awfully strange. No response yet from Comcast. Did not have this problem with the Motorola.

We had a 110 activated today.....needed a tech to come out and zap it

I have a Samsung 46B630

Just went out and changed the source on the Samsung from RNG 110 on HDMI to our DVD and back to the RNG 110 on HDMI...signal from RNG 110 was still there

My sequence is turning the RNG 100 first followed by the HDTV

I see something similar on our XBR8. If we turn off the TV and leave the 110 on, when we power back up the TV there is no video signal until we change channels on the 110.

Just picked up my comcast rng110 STB from the service center today. Do I have to call and get it activated before it will work? I would think they activate it when they gave it to me. Yes - you probably will need to activate......however when you hook the 110 up to your TV, you can check to see if you get a picture

I am in MD and the activation # they gave me is 800-995-6893. Mine would not activate so they sent out a tech (no charge) and he was able to activate it with his hand held computer. He said the call center could of sent the same signal as he did but they are not that tech savy.

The 110 manual says this about the port "To connect USB devices (future use)"

Hope this helps

rsecpa, pjp - i have a very similar issue here: the comcast RNG110 box in sony xbr9 HDMI port 1 and PS3 in HDMI port 2. when i switch to the PS3 from the cable box it's fine, but when i then switch back to the cable box it can't detect a signal, UNTIL i change a channel on the cable box - then it's fine. it's strange - TV issue, cable box issue, both? i bet a firmware update would fix it. any ideas?

Question - I'd like to control this cable box using the xbr9 remote - can't seem to get it to work using codes from sony - does anyone have any advice for this?

ok - answering my own second question regarding a remote code for the RNG110 cable box:
this site: [can't post a url until i have 3 posts]

allows one to enter the manufacturer (pace) and model (rng110) -but be sure to click the cable option above it (given a choice of TV, video+dvd, audio, cable, more). i got this code: 00237, below that is a button for "show me more" which gave these codes:
01376
01877
00008
01982
the last one worked!!!

anyway - still have the HDMI input switching issue....

My guess is that the issue is with the RNG 110. I still have a Motorola Comcast HD box in the home theater system and it doesn't have the issue we see with the 110/XBR8. The Motorola is connected to Sony projector via HDMI, rather than and XBR8/9, so not exactly apples to apples, but my guess is it's the box.

I've tried going into the settings of the box (power-off followed by menu) and got the same results with all combinations of HDMI settings.

I haven't called Comcast yet, but will when the office opens.

It's probably two colliding issues, Comcast's "switched digital" protocal and a "HDMI handshake" dropped connection prompted by switching inputs. Switching "channels" originates a call for the new "switched digital 'channel'" and refreshes the "HDMI handshake" connection.

Comcast tried to get me to accept a Pace RNG110 but that model has no RF output for daisy-chaining.

I stood my ground, holding out for the Motorola DCX3200 that offers flexible connectivity options.

My Motorola DCX3200 is daisy-chained to five recorders, one in the same room and four others in a second room; and directly connected via S-Video and composite outputs to two other recorders in the same room. The DCX3200 component output is connected to a HD "Ready" widescreen LCD TV (that doesn't have a HDMI input). The DCX3200 single white/red audio output is split with "Y" adapters to provide audio to the TV and two line in connections to two recorders in the same room. That's a total of seven recorders connected to a single Motorola DCX3200.

The Motorola DCX3200 is seen in the first photo, the connectivity illustration is seen in the second photo and some of the "Y" adapters are seen in the third photo.

Place a small piece of paper over the front of the cable box. Then try it. If that is the problem you can solve it by finding the eye on the cable box and placing a very small piece of paper over the eye. Some have solved the problem by turning down the brightness of the TV also.

Has anyone had any success finding the "eye" on this box? I have an IR extender and am trying to find where to stick the little transmitter on this box to get it to work.

Did you try shining a flashlight at anywhere there is translucent plastic?

stewman12

Yes, I did try that. The problem is the whole front of it is dark, translucent plastic. There were a couple of places that looked like it could by the IR sensor, but I placed the transmitter over them (and pretty much all over the thing), but haven't gotten it to work.

Another trick is to bring the remote right up touching the box and start clicking. If it doesn't respond, you're not over the eye. If it does, it should be right there.

Stewman -

Good luck trying to get your "eye" to work. These boxes are the bane of all custom installers existence. By the way there are actually two "eyes" both on the left side of the box (I took the cover off - snaps off easily) to see them. If you use a flashlight on an angle you can see them.

Your factory remote will work. Even a URC remote with codeset 113 going IR will work. But anytime you try to use any codes through an "eye" you'll get nothing.

If you do, please let us know. I have 4 of these in an installation right now, and nothing i can do works.

I'm one step away from telling the client to call Comcrap and get the standard Motorola boxes back. At least they work.

By this do you mean a remote "eye"? I am using the factory remote - I am just trying to use an extender since I don't have direct line-of-site to the box. Is this what you're saying probably won't work?

That is the input connection for an external IR sensor as seen in the attached photo of a Pace DC50X DTA. In the Pace DTA documentation the external IR is used whenever the DTA itself is inconveniently located, say behind the TV.

See this from the Troubleshooting section on page 18:

Check that nothing is blocking the path from your
remote control to the front panel.
Check that your remote control is currently set to
operate your set-top (consult the instructions supplied
with your remote control).
If your remote control will still not operate your set-top,
replace the batteries in your remote control.

I, too, have the same problem with a new install of an RNG110, as though the batteries are almost dead. Replacing the batteries didn't help with either of the dark gray remotes Comcast provided.

What DID seem to help was shading the top of the RNG110 to keep the tv from illuminating the RNG IR sensor. (I just have a couple of cd cases overhanging the front and the remote is suddenly responsive.) ymmv

Anyone seeing the issue with close captions (CC) on this box? They are not readable.

The CC text is pretty poor. I couldn't get CC to work at all when they first installed, but it started working after doing CC reset to defaults (using power off then menu button to get into control).

You can change the text format in that same menu, I found it best to set to font 4, set background to transparent, and font color red. This is pretty readable and less distracting than when background is blocked out black, but it's not easy to read if there are graphics in that area or the background color is red/orange. Still, I think I prefer this setting over the default. Graphically, it seems like it would be more readable if the line they use to form the letters was thicker.

I read on the RemoteCentral.com forum about using the IR Sensor Extender that comes with the DTAs that Comcast has been sending out. So I went to the other room and removed it from the DTA I had there and plugged it into the back of the Pace RNG 110. Guess what! Works like a charm now. That would tell me that the sensor(s) on the RNG110 aren't very good. If the remote that comes with it performs no better or less that the Harmony remote but using a plug in IR Sensor does the trick...I think we have a fix here.

Ok - so I'm trying to get my Hava to work with this thing and I can't get the damn thing to work. I tried the IR sensors on just about every spot on the front of the box. I also tried an external IR sensor that came with my HDMI Switch, with the sensors right up to it, and THAT didnt work. My remote control works fine (although all the old remotes I have dont seem to work with this box). I've taken forums advice and programmed in the C1982 code for my Hava and doesnt want to work for whatever reason. Is it possible this one uses a different code? Cant figure it out...

Hava uses the same UEI IR blaster chip as the slingbox (to control external devices), Depending on exactly which model of Hava you have it could be a PL, PX or Axium chip... Long story short is that the new protocol in the Cisco RNG boxes is the XMP protocol (the dark grey comcast remotes) and although UEI invented the protocol, their current chipsets neither have that code built in nor can they learn that protocol (brilliant I might add).

There is a light at the end of the tunnel, however - Like the Slingbox, the Hava has a mechanism to accept new IR codes - you have to get (I'll define that in a moment) a .bin file and upload it to the Hava with a computer and then the C1982 code will be available to you (not sure which format Hava uses but C1982 is probably 11982 C=Cable=1 by the way)...

How to get the bin file -
You can go do a bunch of reading on the hifi-remote.com forums and use the remote master program to create and export a .bin upgrade file or, I understand there are folks at Hava who will create a file for you given the right info - there is a pretty good post here with the information.

http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10619&highlight=hava

And, over on monsoon, there is a thread for the PNG 200 which should be equivalent - they already have a .bin file for that that is worth a try...

ok - answering my own second question regarding a remote code for the RNG110 cable box:
this site: [can't post a url until i have 3 posts]

allows one to enter the manufacturer (pace) and model (rng110) -but be sure to click the cable option above it (given a choice of TV, video+dvd, audio, cable, more). i got this code: 00237, below that is a button for "show me more" which gave these codes:
01376
01877
00008
01982
the last one worked!!!

anyway - still have the HDMI input switching issue....

Thanks very much for this. The programs codes listed in the book for the Sony XBR9 don't work, but 01982 works. This is good news for the XBR9 (remote RM-YD029); however, our XBR8 came with Sony remote RM-YD024 and it does not accept code 01982 (it flashes 5 times indicating it didn't load).

Thank you for contacting Sony Support.

I'm sorry to inform you that the RM-YD024 Remote Control does not have the feature to control the Digital set-top box. Hence, it cannot be programmed to operate the Pace RNG110 STB.

Put the set top box on the channels with problems first.
Check the main diag page on the RNG110 set top box. With your Comcast remote, power down the box, and right away (withing 2 seconds) press the "ok/select" button. The main diag page will come up. Check that all the items with colors are green. If you have any that are brown or red, then you are having signal issues that need correcting.

Please post back if you have any lines brown or red.

Has anyone got the ITV function to work? Comcast finally got the caller ID to display on the TV but they cannot seem to get the ITV option to show on the menu of the RNG110. Too easy to talk to someone that really doesn't know what they are doing.

I recently found out that it may be due to the Comcast system showing that I have a different cable box other that what is installed. Not sure. They sent a tech out to fix the issue a few weeks ago and he got nothing done at all. He tried a few cable boxes while he was here to compare pictures. Perhaps he didn't remove them off my account and this ITV feature is trying to sync with a box that I don't even have.

Your having signal level issues. You might have too many splitters daisy chained in the house, or a signal issue due to loose/corrorded/wet f connectors, bad cabling, bad splitters or other wiring issues. If you want to clean up your splitter issues youself, eliminate what you are not using.

Otherwise, best to call in Comcast and get a tech out to get the signals back to proper levels.

I just got my RNG110 from comcast. I am using HDMI cable into my HDTV. Comcast has activated my box, but all of the HD channels display as 4:3, not 16:9. I have spent an hour on the phone, and several hours on tech support chat. My box didn't come with a manual, so I got the details of how to get at the RNG110 menu. When I change from 16:9 to 4:3 on the RNG110, the picture is exactly the same on my HDTV, that of a 4:3 signal. Same as when I change the 1080/720/480 option.

Do I have a bad RNG110 or is there another reason I can't get widescreen?

If I tell my HDTV to zoom, I get widescreen, but then all channels are widescreen, and not just the HDTV. So the RNG110 is taking all channels, whether HD or not, and displaying them in 4:3 mode, with black boxes on the side.

Also, the comcast info menu for the channel is in 4:3 mode. Does anyone know if on HDTV, these menus are wide?

I've noticed some channels coming through in a smaller format. It's like 16:9 but smaller. I've seen this done with ads but not regular TV very much. But after Comcast pushed out some updates back on 2/18 I've seen this more. Not sure pbbear if this is relative to your issue.

Your notes say you switched from 16:9 to 4:3. So apparently no matter how you set it you are not getting 16:9? What process are you going through to make this change.

The Guide and Menu items can also be displayed in 16:9.

Follow these instructions:

(RNG110 manual here with these and other instructions: http://www.midcocomm.com/classlibrary/page/resourcecenter/files/191.pdf. Page 11 for the instructions below.)

Here:
Putting your set-top into “user settings mode”
1. Make sure that your set-top is turned on (POWER light is green).
2. Press the POWER button on your remote control (POWER light goes off), then press the Menu button.
You should see the USER SETTINGS menu, shown right, on your TV screen.
3. When you have finished making changes (see pages 11 through 15), press the POWER button to remove the
USER SETTINGS menu and return to normal viewing.
About the TV Aspect Ratio
The TV that you have connected to your set-top has an aspect ratio (width-to-height ratio) of 4:3 (basic/
standard) or 16:9 (widescreen). You must set the appropriate TV Aspect Ratio (4:3 or 16:9) on your set-top, so
that it is compatible with your TV.
Setting the TV Aspect Ratio
If you have not done so already, put your set-top into User Settings mode, as described above.
Press the U or D button on your remote control and highlight TV Aspect Ratio on the USER SETTINGS menu.
1. To change the TV Aspect Ratio, press the R button.
The TV Aspect Ratio menu, shown below, appears on your TV screen. On the menu, the current setting
(“4:3” or “16:9”) has > in front of it. Also, whenever the current setting is displayed, the DATA light will be
lighted on your set-top’s front panel.
TV Aspect Ratio
4:3
>16:9
2. Press the U or D button to highlight the TV Aspect Ratio you want.
3. Press the OK/Select button to confirm your choice and change to that TV Aspect Ratio.

I just picked up one of these from my local Comcast office, got it set up and activated, mostly seems to be working fine. But is this box supposed to pass 5.1? I can only get two channel audio to my AVR. Using optical only, so the cable, output jack, and input jack are working since I do have audio, just not the audio I want.

I read the manual online and it doesn't mention 5.1 specifically, unless I missed it. I'd rather not call comcast until I know there is an issue for sure.

Thanks!

I would PM Linden on this forum. He works for Pace and may provide insight on what a SAM message is and why the box cannot find it or why it thinks it needs to download new software.

Interesting to note that the Comcast RNG-110 is just a repackaged and re-branded Pace Seattle dc701x. That's good to know, now it's easier to get specifications on the actual chipset.

Hi everyone, this is my 2nd post on avsforum since joining the other day, so please excuse any mistakes I make.

Two weeks ago my Comcast/Pace RNG110 HD STB fried and I got a replacement and tried Firewire on it with no luck. Win7/32 and Vista would not detect it, called CC and they said they sent a signal to activate it but it never rebooted. I asked her to escalate the issue and got the usual BS - "we don't support it, it's factory disabled, blah blah blah!

So I came here knowing that some people have it working and found out about some of the diag menus and discovered it IS enabled! Called CC again. got a good tech and he fixed it and a brown IPPV Enabled (NO) in the diag dashboard.

I'll pass on a few tips that may help some of you:

1. Pace RNG110 is so sensitive that the remote pointed at my workstation TV (which is facing the stb ~25 ft away) will change channels on it! Good or bad depending on how you look at it.

2. I know for fact that the new CC DTA remote will control the stb (without guide and navigation) and it has been reported here that the remote control IR receiver with the DTA works on it also.

3. Found out yesterday about a great $20.00 6 device remote that will control the RNG110 on comcastsupport forums. It is the Universal Remote Control brand Model # URC-R6 - I bought one today at best buy - best $20.00 I've spent in a long time. The 3 digit setup code is 110! Also avail on Frys, buy.com and newegg (check out the reviews at newegg!)

4. Here are the 3 RNG110 STB menus/settings controlled with the remote that I am aware of (1st 2 allow user changes):

4.1 User Settings - Power off > Menu (press < 2 sec)

4.2 Cable Box Setup - Menu > Main Menu > Setup > Cable Box Setup

4.3 Diagnostic Dashboard and Diag Menu - Power > OK/Select (press < 2 sec)
(1394 status is item 21 in Diag Menu)

Any other Diag menus you might have please pass them along -feel free to PM me also.

In case this helps others. A couple of days ago my RNG110 (installed about 2 weeks ago) started rebooting in a loop with the same symptoms others have been reporting and same problems with comcast trying to fix it remotely.

After some of my own troubleshooting I discovered that if you disconnect all the cables (e.g. hdmi, component, video to slingbox, optical for sound, etc.) the system completes the software update, reboots and stops the cycle.

At this point the system was not authorized for on-demand and any channels beyond basic. First comcast attempt to send a signal did not work. Finally they realized they needed to send a double signal also to the network card and that fixed that problem.

Last issue I have is that standard channels that show 4x3 are centered fine, HD channels are full screen and fine, however, when a HD channels shows a 4x3 image it is offset to the right (black bar on the left is twice the size of the one on the right.) Attempts to center via the regular menu setup, or via the user settings of the box have made no impact. Might be a bad box but I would be interested if others have seen this and what the fix might be.

Have not seen this issue -- 4:3 always shows up with black bars on both sides. I have seen a different issue where the HD channels become enlarged so that the outside edges of the screen are cut off (it's most obvious when something like QVC is on where the graphics on the outside of the image are cut off). I "fix" it by going into the cable box menu and toggling the aspect ratio to 4:3 to 16:9 and that corrects it till it comes back (usually about 1 week). It always shows 16:9, but when this happens it seems to go into 4:3 even though the setup is still set to 16:9.

You might want to try toggling the aspect ratio setup and see if that helps.

Recently got a new, larger plasma and so moved our 2006 Panasonic plasma to a bedroom. This tv is 720p, 42 inches. Swapped out our old SD box for a new HD one, the Pace RNG110.

With our other box (Motorola with DVR), SD content set at "justified" filled the screen correctly and HD content set at "Full" displayed correctly. I am having a lot of trouble with the Pace box getting proper aspect ratio on both SD and HD content. I have it set to 16:9 and "yes" to all display capabilities. Turning off 1080i makes no difference that I can see. Most HD programs fill the screen as they should but some have black bars top and bottom (and these are not movies shown in letterbox). Also, some HD programs that fill the screen look sort of stretched in the middle. Many SD channels also have the black bars. Using "justified" or "H-fill" settings on our tv does not eliminate the bars. Using HD zoom as Comcast says to do in these cases enlarges the picture too much so that parts are cut off.

Don't want to pay for two DVR's so is there anything I can do to get the proper displays?

I was annoyed with the RNG110 when I first got it because my TV had trouble tuning channels when going from HD to SD channels. There would be a blank screen and a "video not found" warning for a second before the new channel would display.

The fix is to change the TV display properties in the User Control menu [User Settings - Power off > Menu (press < 2 sec)] to just one input setting. In my case the TV's native display is 1080i. By setting that as the only one as YES and then NO for all other resolutions I was able to get faster and smoother channel changes.

I did the same thing, only for a different reason. I was seeing it sometimes use other resolutions than 1080i, not sure why, but fixed it by setting it to 10808 only. Hardcoding it to 1080i also helped reduce time to change the channels.

When I installed mine (not far from you actually) I asked about it and they said no plans at the time. But that was back in March.

I am curious if anyone is having issues with the mini Guide. You can use the up and down arrows to page up or down. I've found that some times the Menu pops up, it switches to Comcast On Demand or occasionally doesn't respond (while the mini guide is up). This happens with my Harmony 880 and the Comcast remote as well.

i got one of these the other day and the cable guy said the usb and ethernet were disabled. Didn't ask about the firewire, but I imagine that is disabled, too. Someone told me that they were able to charge their ipod using the usb port. Haven't tried it yet, but that might at least be useful. I am finding the lack of output options on this unit to be very annoying. I'm already looking at cable adapters and alternative routing in order to most effectively connect the peripherals I need to access. Also coming across occasional "cannot record" messages, which I never saw on my other motorola box, even with HDMI, so there's clearly some kind of extra copy protection thing kicking in. I'm referring to standard fare -- repeat episode of House and a PBS show, nothing fancy or pay per view. And some on demand works, while other shows would not load on the RNG110 (tho they worked fine on my motorola in the other room). The message said to replug the cables. Very odd, temperamental little box.

I may go back to component, since some of the delay between channels may also be due to HDMI negotiation.

The 3400m is the networked dvr for the Anyroom Dvr service, did you order that? If so you will get the 3200m as the secondary box. If not, you will most likely get what is available for the hd box. Comcast usually doesn't guarantee a model. I think both are about the same in the end.

The Pace RNG110 is a HD converter box that has component, composite and HDMI outputs but lacks RF and S-Video outputs. Due to these limitations I found the RNG110 unsuitable for my use daisy-chaining recorders.

The Motorola DCH3200 and DCX3200 are HD converter boxes that have component, composite, HDMI, S-Video and RF outputs. The RF output is useful for daisy-chaining recorders and other purposes. The DCH3400 and DCX3400 models are full-featured DVRs. My DCX3200 feeds its signals to six recorders, S-Video to one Panasonic DVD recorder, composite video to one Panasonic DVD recorder (where Y adapters split the DCX3200 audio outputs between these two recorders and a TV), and the RF output feeds a daisy-chain including one Philips and one Magnavox HDD/DVD recorder and two Panasonic DVD recorders.

Cable guy who brought one of these out for me said that they like them because they can activate them as either HD or SD, which makes their lives easier. (also allows people to update w/o swapping the box). On the down side, even he had trouble getting the thing activated - they have to call and specify which flavor service you're supposed to have. Not sure HOW they do that when the user is self-installing.

They say it's HD, regardless of whether you're using component or HDMI - composite output is another option.Mine does not have RF out, but if it's any indication, the picture out from composite was pretty bad. HDMI and component seem comparable (on 720 tv that accepts 1080i) but OTA signal still seems sharper. No S-video on these so not thrilled about the way I'm feeding recorder.

I have this box also, I am currently on my third box and it keeps doing the ASTB downloader 3-4 times a weekend during erastic times. they have checked all lines, power etc. I am almost done with COMCAST and going back to DIRECTTV.

This box has been repeatedly unable to start an On Demand program. After the third time in two weeks of needing to reset it I traded it for a DCX3200. So far so good.

The HDMI just brings the digital sound and digital picture into one cable and offers better speeds as I understand it. So, in most part, you should get the same thing with digital sound (digital coax or optical...) and video (component) as HDMI.

As for the RNG110. I've been pretty happy with it. I don't screw around if I run into an obvious issue I know that's not on my end. Comcast has been doing changes in the Denver area and I think they are working out kinks yet. It was quite a while before they got the iTV function into the menu on this box here. A couple of times (over about three weeks) they had picture issues but was pretty short lived. Turned out a node crapped out and they had to replace it. They continue to work on the menu.

I've been battling a pair of these ##%%!! RNG 110 units for about 4 weeks now. It appears that when they are not connected to a TV HDMI sink for a period of time they turn themselves off. The only thing that wakes them up is the POWER TOGGLE command from the Comcast remote. Does anyone know if there is a Discrete ON command available?

Does anyone know the watts of a Comcast HD RNG110 box? I'd like to connect a surge protector to it and my plasma tv. Does it also matter the size of the tv in how much the cable box uses power?

My tv is a Pioneer Elite Kuro PRO-151FD 60 inch plasma

I just had a RNG110 installed. I have the RF output connector. Anyone know how to get the box to allow RF output be the same as the RF input? Having the RF out as analog ch3 isn't really so good.

My RNG110 has no coax output, just an input only. Having a passthru mode would be convenient.

I've read here that some have it and some don't. I would like a second opinion if a channel is messed up. All my basic cable channels are clear QAM and the locals are HD. I'm not trying to daisy-chain the box, but since the coax is there and I have heard other boxes have a pass though mode, I thought I would give it a shot. Thanks for the interest.

Tomorrow is the Superbowl. I received my RNG110 few days ago and everything worked fine except some HD channels (MTVHD, TBSHD, TNTHD) which came up as "not authorized." I spoke to Comcast rep for several hours after being transferred several times. A rep told me to unplug the box for 30 seconds and then the same thing for 10 seconds. After I plugged it back in, all 4 lights started blinking in succession. After a series of blinks, the box shuts off and then power light goes on just by itself. The box will not respond to my comcast remote and there is no changes after resetting and powering down and up. Please help me as the Superbowl is tomorrow. Comcast wants to setup a meet with the tech on Tuesday but it'll already be too late. Anyone have any ideas to diagnose this issue?

Has anyone ever had the issue of the unit turning itself off? This is happening to me and is bad, because i'm using it with the HD PVR unit, so it needs to stay on 24/7..

Thanks

The unit may be shutting itself down because it is near its maximum for upstream signal. Do you sometimes get error codes when running on demand? Does it shut down when you go to access on demand?

If you push [Cable], [power] (to turn off), and then quickly [select] it should show you the diagnostics dashboard, which will be color coded. Do you have any red categories?

It will also shut off when taking a new firmware update, usually happens in the middle of the night. This is normal and should not happen all that often.

Other important things to remember. The HDMI port will be disabled if you do not subscribe to HD service. Different packages also include different HD channels, some only come with the basic networks in HD. Customer Service should be able to tell you what you get.

Can't poinpoint exactly when this started as it's not consistant, but perhaps after a firmware upgrade a while back.

I use the "set VCR" function to automatically set channels while recording to my HDD/DVD recorder. Sometimes it works fine, other times I get just the video feed but the audio is silent. Very frustrating when I go to watch a recording and there's no sound. After it does this, I actually can't get any audio to the TV from the STB at all until I power the STB off and back on. I'm using the component cables as mine doesn't have a coax output and I don't have the HD package.

I'm sure it changes for each cable company. My cost is $5 a month from a very small cable company.

If the box is off when the recording starts, it will turn on but the audio will be muted. This happens the same as the DVR but pretty pointless for a connection to a HDD. Doesn't help explain why it shuts off but why some recordings have no audio.

EDIT Sorry I combined two in my post. Try making sure the box is always left on.

Thanks, I'll experiment. This may explain why it's been inconsistant for me. You say it happens with the Comcast DVR too? How absurd! I can't come up with any good reason, or even a bad one, why a timed recording in the STB would turn the video on but not the audio. What's the point otherwise?

What I understood it was so if the television was left on, or a connected stereo was left on, the sound would not wake up the household. That may be urban myth but sounded semi-logical to me. The DVR still records the audio so no big deal, but no help for non-dvr boxes using the vcr recording reminder.

Just reading this thread. The same thing happens to me with the Comcast SD 2500. Setting a vcr reminder and turning the box off results in no audio. Leaving the box on, it'll turn to the correct ch with no problem.
If there were compelling programming on the handful of additional channels on the box, I might have called in and complained. But I'm so tired of this company, I just don't feel like hassling with them any more than I need to.

Wow, I had no idea this was going on , but it does explain some odd behavior. I've been leaving mine on lately, the big blue light notwithstanding, and the recordings have been OK, so I guess that's the answer. Recordings without sound are NO fun! I'm still a little annoyed that there's no svideo out on this box (and no RF). Very minimal.... I'm using it for my second tv, so it's ok, but if it were my main box I'd be more likely to return it. The motorola I have on the other tv is a lot better in terms of output options, plus some other features.

ok - answering my own second question regarding a remote code for the RNG110 cable box:
this site: [can't post a url until i have 3 posts]

allows one to enter the manufacturer (pace) and model (rng110) -but be sure to click the cable option above it (given a choice of TV, video+dvd, audio, cable, more). i got this code: 00237, below that is a button for "show me more" which gave these codes:
01376
01877
00008
01982
the last one worked!!!

anyway - still have the HDMI input switching issue....

Hey guys, I just got a new Marantz SR7005 receiver and I was trying to set its remote so can control my set box. Unfortunately I can't find the codes on internet and I'm not able to solve the issue with the learn function of the Marantz remote.

I was able to set the remote of my old Pioneer 1021, so I know that is possible to control my xfinity/comcast RNG 110 set box with another remote (not its own), I'm just unable to do that with the Marantz remote which accepts only 4 digits codes.

So, anyone knows a 4 digit code to control the set box with my Marantz remote? Thanks
