I've got a challenging placement problem for my rears. While i can easily wall mount the 1 side the other side will be an issue. Questions: will audessy help if i mount them at the ceiling? Should i mount them on an angle towards the couch? Should i try to drop them thru the ceiling tiles facing straight down? Any and all opinions and suggestions appreciated. Oh, they are swans 5.2R http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx14/chrischaos/IMG_0479.jpg http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx14/chrischaos/IMG_0480.jpg http://i737.photobucket.com/albums/xx14/chrischaos/IMG_0481.jpg

you question is a tad jumbled, but I will try an answer...
First, are you setting up a 7.1 speaker layout ? The only true "rear" speakers are in a 7.1 system. The surrounds in a 5.1 layout are more "sides", mounted within 100 to 110 degrees with the TV as zero and "slightly above seated ear level".
All that said, yes you can mount them near the ceiling as a compromise due to room layout. Mount them so they can be aimed at the listening area. Audessy will attempt to balance out the sound, but you may need to do some manual tweeking in the end.
You can also use in-ceiling units for surrounds, but they should be angled mounts or have pivoting tweeters so they are "aimable", just like the wall mounted units.
Please, do not mount the surrounds as "down firing" in-ceiling units. Even if you are within the sound cone for the speaker, it is obvious to your ears that the sound is from "above the listener", not beside or behind in the same plane as the listener.
good luck

thank you. Yes they are surrounds for 5.1. I'll stay away from mounting them in the ceiling. I'll have to do some thinking on how to angle them but i will get it done.
