View Full Version : Have I lost my mind?

I think that I may have finally lost it. I am all about gadgets and the latest tech. I have 12 TV's in my home with 10 HD-DVRs.
So, in my basement bathroom I had a 6 month old LG 26" LCD mounted on the wall. This wasn't good enough for me since the back of the bathroom was open space. So I decided to buy another 26" LCD. A Sony 26" which has a bit of a bezel. I mount this set into the wall and it looks awesome, nice and flat. Well, I used to use the speakers on my previous TV. This new one had speakers that were now behind the wall.
So I grabbed an old receiver from storage and connected it via coaxial digital cable which is connected to a switch in the door hinge....when the door is open the coax cable connection is open...so no sound unless you close the door. I did this so that sound from the bathroom doesn't interfere with the TV room or bar. (TV room, has a 73" DLP, bar has a 46" LCD, arcade room has 26" LCD and dedicated HT has 120" screen) I bought 2 ceiling speakers and connected them about 5' apart above the TV. So far nothing too crazy, right????

Well, I started thinking (usually this is followed by me spending money), wouldn't it be cool to connect a center and 2 surrounds? My wife thinks I've lost it. I am even questioning myself. The bathroom is 7.5' x 5.5'. It is a half bath. The TV is along the narrow wall. So if I went with rears they'd be about 6' from the fronts. The TV is used almost exclusively for football games. (So someone watching the game doesn't have to worry about missing action when nature calls) Am I nuts for wanting 5.1 surround in my bathroom?

Thanks for listening,

In a word, YES! Unless, of course, you have Irritable bowel syndrome, and then your time in the can will be well spent.

Oh i can just imagine the poor acoustics... but beyond that, you might as well go nuts! ;)

The main reason I was considering this was because football games on Fox have pretty decent surround. The acoustics of course will suck since the bathroom has marble tile but it is a bathroom. My wife doesn't care so much because of the money (which is almost nothing since I already have most of the things i need). She is more concerned about having 5 speakers in the ceiling. She worries that it will stand out.
I figured that there would be kindred spirits out here on these forums who could understand me. :) Most of my coworkers think I am nuts because of my "regular" A/V setups. (7.1 TrueHD/DTS-MA capable systems in 4 rooms, 5.1 in my workout room)

Before proceeding with the bathroom you may want to put a tv & sound system in the dog house. Because your wife will probably make you sleep there once she's fed up with your antics!!

you may want to spend some time with monks--like a year or a decade and then report back on what you meditation experiences have yielded for an answer to your question:p

seriously though why not? im just guessing the throne may not be in the best position for optimum acoustics--you may want to consider a reference "can" setup or omnipolar speakers. im just sayin...

or perhaps an additional hobby or two--have you considered becoming a helicopter pilot? fast cars? an affair? motorcycles? yachts? lots of fun toys and activities!

I really don't want to know where you are routing the LFE channel/cable.

Extend the 3" pipe from the ground going into your toilet and make a custom subwoofer stand for your toilet to sit on. That will be a worthy situation when the "browns go to the superbowl".

...She is more concerned about having 5 speakers in the ceiling....
And, she is correct...poor judgement on your part here! There are 'stereo' in-ceiling speakers out there that are in a single housing. That's what you want for that small room.

I'll probably stick with 2 channel PCM. I put the 2 ceiling speakers up and they are pretty big. I wasn't going for quality here folks. The bathroom has a marble floor, so there is nothing I could do to really improve acoustics. The choice I was pondering was whether to go with 5 speakers (since I already have them) or stick with 2. That bathroom is surrounded on 3 sides by unfinished storage area. So wiring was easy. I do have a spare 8" powered sub (I recently upgraded one of my pinball machines to a 10" powered sub). I might connect it to the outside of the bathroom and push it up against the stud wall. I don't know how much bass will travel through, but what the heck....another thing that will cost me nothing but electricity.
I just finished up my wired IR repeater for the bathroom. Overall I am very pleased with the results. The TV I put up has a very nice bezel (Sony 26L5000) which makes for a clean in wall installation. It looks sooooooo much better than the wall mounted set I previously had.

Wow, I thought I was obsessed! I think that even if I could afford it I'd draw the line at putting that amount of money and time into putting surround in the can while I'm doing my business. But hey, if you can afford it and want it that bad, what the heck. I think I'd rather "do my thing" and find a more comfortable seat...I can wait that long! To each his own though! (I'm finding it easy to become obsessed with all of this myself!...all you need to do is ask my friends!)

this may be truly too much information, but if youre spending so much time in the bathroom when while watching a game to the point where you want surround, you should change your diet ;)

seriously though, it sounds like youre just a "gadget junkie" and youve ran out of other areas. you dont even want the sound so much (you already admitted poor acoustics), you just want to buy it and hook it up
