I would suggest the Epson 6500UB, if you like LCD projectors. If you are looking for a DLP I would suggest the Sharp XV-Z15000.

Here's the reviews for both:

A good screen will cost you say $800.They last forever. So that leaves you about $1700 for a fp.The epson 6100 viewsonic 8100 and some of the new dlps would be fine if they can work in your room.Or spend the lot on a better fp.And do a DIY screen. But a real screen is the way to go.A good fp without a good screen is a waste to me.

The samsung A-600 looks delicious. Dont think it's out yet, but Art's review (http://www.projectorreviews.com/samsung/sp-a600/index.php) has got me pretty anxious. I was looking at the 6100, but prefer a DLP. That A-600 fits the bill perfectly.

The Sharp has a better review than the Samsung.

Forget the screen, get a better projector and DIY your screen, or just paint the wall until you can afford a decent screen. I have a screen now and a painted wall previous to this, the difference is not that dramatic. Not as dramatic as a higher quality projector compared to an entry level projector.

Thanks for the heads up. I somehow missed Art's review of that one. Sounds absolutely perfect for me :D

If you can wait till September 15 for your projector I would go with the BENQ W6000 DLP projector. You can find it for around your price range, but it wont ship till the 15th of next month.

It's specs are pretty impressive:

Resolution: HD (1920 x 1080)
Display Type: DLP®; DLPTM technology by Texas Instruments®
Brightness: 2500 lumens
Contrast: 50000:1
Weight: 15 lbs.
Warranty: 1 year(s)
Lamp Life: 2000 hours - (all projectors ship with manufacturer supplied lamp)

Might just want to wait until after cedia (two weeks) and just revive this thread. The answer is likely to change.

I'd keep an eye of Infocus IN series prices (in82, in83) after Cedia, but today prices should impacted until october when new projectors start shipping.

Truly amazing how many kick a$$ sub $2500 options there are now (and more soon to come). I am pretty excited to see the Mitsu HC3800 in action as it will probably be the best sub $1500 1080p DLP offering and might even compete with the highly touted 6500UB.

Things are about to get real interesting, that's for certain :D.

I am curious about the Mits too. The Optoma and Vivitek have not peaked my interest at all.

+1 BenQ W6000

Or if you need more brightness consider some of the Short throw projectors that BenQ is releasing:

MP772ST, MP777

Short throw technology is ideal for space constricted areas. The idea behind short throw technology is minimizing the min. distance for a projector to shoot a large image. So if normal projectors need 2-3 meters to shoot a 60" screen, a short throw projector will do it in 0.7-1 meter, with the same result of a 60" screen.

MP777

MP772ST

EDIT*
Apologies, but I forgot that the MP777 is not short throw. Sorry for the confusion!

Personally I wouldn't even consider the BenQ MP772ST or the MP777ST. Native 1024 x 768 isn't even a viable option for home theater considering how cheap 1080p projectors are now let alone 720p. If you like DLP the Sharp XV-Z15000 is a short throw projector with a lot more features than those two BenQs. If you like LCD the 6500UB would definitely be a good choice from what I've read.

However, I would also caution the OP to wait for at least a couple weeks. The best deals will be coming this fall.

Well, I just want to broaden other people's alternatives up. I'm sorry if it seems like an mismatch for most home theater enthusiasts but I actually own an MP771ST and find it quite applicable for Home Theater. Okay it's not as great as a 1080p, but its not far off from the low end home theater (1080p) projectors.
