View Full Version : 1080 projector under $2000
HTBuilderPA2009 08-25-09, 05:41 PM I am in the market for a 1080 projector. My theatre size is going to we 15' x 12' with the seating to wall being 12'. The projector will mount above the seating at 89". What is a good projector that wont break the bank and is good for the money. Also would it be better to get a projector or an LED wall mounted HDTV?
HTBuilderPA2009 08-26-09, 08:41 AM Here is one big dilema that I am having with my HT. I am deciding between LED tv mounted on the wall or projector. Here is my situation...the wall that the projector would be thrown to is about 15 feet wide so that is not a problem. Seating is about 12 feet away from the wall so that is my concern. my other concern is that the projector would be mounted to the ceiling, which is 8 feet high. so the directional thrown would be to the wall that is 12 feet away and 8 feet high. Do you understand what I mean. I am going to do 1080 and wanted to know if I will be getting a good quailty picture from that distance. My concern is that the throw angle will be at a downward angle, meaning 8 feet high and going 12 feet to the center of the wall.
Any comments?
check out the Viewsonic pro8100 HD
it has lens shift and is very flexible in it's placement requirements

werd if you want 1080p, thats pretty much the only thing thats gonna fit your needs. if you're actually budgeting 2k for a projector the epson 6100 will throw a better picture than the viewsonic but its about 600 bucks more expensive (2 grand on the nose).
HTBuilderPA2009 08-26-09, 10:13 AM just for verification...what if my distance is 9ft from wall to display screen? And I mount it 8ft on the ceiling. This would me 8ft high and 9ft away from screen. What type of quality would I be getting?
gwlaw99 08-26-09, 10:21 AM The best advice I can give is wait until the end of September as all the new projectors will be out by then and prices on current models with drop a lot. If you can wait until black friday, you will get even better deals.

some prices are already dropping
the hd200x price is now 1199 in canada, it was 1599
Toe Tag 08-27-09, 10:58 PM The Sharp Z15000 is a DLP PJ in your price range. But there is talk of 1080p for half your price. At the very least, wait 2 weeks until the dust settles from the IFA and CEDIA conventions, and all the new 2010 models are announced.

your room sounds pretty good for a pj. even with having to have an offset (the top of the screen image lower than the projector) you should be able to get around a 120 inch diagonal image. most new projectors will deliver that at full quality from 12 feet away, subject to the level of ambient light.
go to projectorcentral.com and try the calculator pro. this is a great tool for measuring your room and variouis projectors to see if they work.

the quality you get will be basically the same whether it is 9 feet or 12 feet. the main difference will be the size of the image. generally, you get 10 inches of diagonal for each foot of distance between the projector and the screen (subject to the zoom capabilities of the pj). so three feet means 30 inches of diagonal or the difference betweeen a 90 inch image and a 120 inch image.
gwlaw99 08-28-09, 09:48 AM With 9 feet from lens to screen, I would go LCD as they have much larger zoom lenses. You want eyes to screen distance to be 1.2 screen widths away. Check projectorcentals calculator pro befor buying.
novasol 08-28-09, 04:15 PM One user here sent his 6100 back, bought a Pro8100 and says it's better in every way. Anyway, yes you're looking at an LCD if you have to ceiling mount it. All the budget projectors are DLP so you're best bet is getting a discontinued LCD now before they sell out.

Is that so?
Says WHO exactly?
Have YOU tested BOTH yourself, or are you talking out of your ***?
My guess is there is some reputation here because of love affair with Brightness, lets not confuse the two.

I've been reading to over 3k forum and this is the first time I heard this. I'm researching for my first FP and have a similar room 12x16, sitting 10' back and will have screen on the 12' wall. Looking at 92" screen because of tower speakers and vaulted ceiling (media room 100% light controlled) is 10' with power and HDMI run.
Care to elaborate on why I can stop looking at DLP?

Perhaps I confused you...I meant mounting the projector directly to the ceiling at 8 feet above your head. You can of course ceiling mount a DLP, you just have to adjust the drop of the mount to accommodate the fact that DLP's generally have no vertical lens shift.

You're absolutely right i have a love affair with brightness. You couldn't be closer to the truth if you tried. I like a bright projector with a decent contrast ratio because in my house there is always a light on unless were sleeping. From what i've seen with my friends im not alone in that respect. Also, when it comes to game day with your friends it's kind of a downer to be in a completely dark room with a bunch of guys. its kinda of....unsettling.

As long as everyone keeps their pants on, you should be all right. :)

Fair enough, brightness is definitely a good thing.
I have a Black Widow painted wall, and a DaLite HP Pull down.......I just ordered the 8100, so my guess is the HP will make it SEEM like the 6100......only better ;)....
And muccccccccccch cheaper!!
Enjoy the 6100, I'd bet you'll be very happy.
suffolk112000 09-02-09, 10:13 PM Did the OP ever find a projector?
The OP had in an earlier thread indicated he wanted 1080i. It looks as though that has changed?
Toe Tag 09-06-09, 06:39 AM Look into this Mitsubishi HC3800... Maybe about $1500... with CMS!

And check this too... http://www.projectorreviews.com/optoma/hd20/index.php
"$999 is the new selling price point for entry level 1080p projectors, and the Optoma HD20 home theater projector is the first we've seen at this price, and to our knowledge the first of three at this price point. The other two include DLP projectors from Vivitek, and BenQ. We'll be reviewing those as soon as we can get them in."
Good thing we waited for IFA and CEDIA announcements!
hessel holland 09-06-09, 11:14 AM Pro8100....this baby's good. Lots of posts in the $3000 up forum.
