after an hour or so of watching, the color gets all distorted and changes to a grayish hue. i tried replacing the lamp and that didn't fix anything. could it be the color wheel or just the board going bad?

Not much to go on. Suggest you post pictures of the Tv screen when the problem is showing. Does it affect Tv menus? Does it affect all inputs?
