View Full Version : No 5.1 rear speaker sound from a 7.1 blu ray disc
eianson 08-25-09, 10:34 PM Hey folks,
I just popped in my first blu ray disc into my Panasonic BD-60 and I am not getting any sound out of my rear speakers during the movie. The disc I am playing is the "Sleeping Beauty" 7.1 audio track, which my understanding has some dynamic surround features. My receiver is a Denon AVR-789 with a 5.1 setup.
I played a 5.1 DVD on the BD-60 the other day and it sounded terrific. Also, when the "Sleeping Beauty" previews and menus play there is plenty coming from the rear speakers.
I am guessing that between the receiver and the BD player, I have some setting wrong.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Sorry (I'm probably using the wrong jargon)....I have a standard 5.1 speaker setup. No 6th and 7th rear speakers. Just the surround speakers. I selected the 7.1 sound track (which says it will work with a 7.1 or 5.1 setup)....that is why I'm surprised that I am not hearing anything out of the surround speakers.

I suspect that you may have your surround speakers connected to the rear speaker terminals. Have you done the setup procedures and tested that the speaker connections are correct? How are the player and AVR connected (HDMI, coax, optical, analog)?
eianson 08-25-09, 10:55 PM OK. How are the player and AVR connected (HDMI, coax, optical, analog)? Which track did you select on the BRD? What mode have you selected on the AVR?
HDMI
The 7.1 track on the BRD (the other option was 2.0).
The AVR is set to Auto for DVD input, and it was displaying DTS Surround when the BRD was playing.

The speaking are hooked up correctly. They have been tested and have been operating great with 5.1 DVDs both with my DVD player and the new BRD player. It is an HDMI connection.
Kal Rubinson 08-25-09, 11:08 PM Well, that takes care of all the obvious. It is, probably, something in the setup for the player or the AVR but that requires a lot of detail. I hope someone else has some insight for you.

Thanks for trying Kal.
check the menu on the bluray player. sounds like something is wonky in the output mode for BD sound. it might only be set to stereo for some reason?
BIslander 08-26-09, 10:57 AM Have you tried any other Blu-rays? Sleeping Beauty was mastered in mono way back when and even though it's been remixed for 7.1, I don't recall there being much surround activity when I watched that disc with my kids a few months ago. (EDIT: I popped in the disc and ther's definitely sound in the surrounds - music and such. Not dramatic, but there's audio for sure.)
The AVR is set to Auto for DVD input, and it was displaying DTS Surround when the BRD was playing.
DTS Surround means the player is outputting the lossy DTS core, not the lossless dts-MA track. That doesn't explain the silent surrounds, of course. But, it's indicative of a set-up problem on your player. How have you set Secondary Audio? It needs to be set to Off in order to get lossless audio.
