Hello,

i have this problem (Ubuntu 9.04)

In Windows 7 can be set resolution 1360x768 (native LCD TV), picture is perfect (picture stretched on entire surface).

After in Ubuntu is available only lower resolutions.

When I install hardware drivers, then if is resolution set right, like this is picture outside TV (top and bottom bar is outside TV).

Please help.

LCD TV is connected with HDMI cable (mainboard Asus M3N78-EM, integrated graphic card Geforce 8300)

The term for that is "overscan". It can be turned off on the TV itself, most of the time, but it's different for every TV. On my TV, I need to change the "Aspect ratio" setting from "16:9" to "Just Scan".

Hope this helps!

Overscan and aspect ratio are two different things. Regardless of what ratios your TV supports it still is probably overscanning. Most TVs do on HDMI/component/DVI input. Many TVs have a way to turn this off. What model TV do you have? Have you looked in your manual about ways to turn off overscanning.

sometimes the no-overscan mode is called PC-mode.

Yes, Win7 offer in dialog resolution 1360x768 in section "PC". Top is section HD, SD.

When I connect my HTPC to LCD TV via VGA cable, then picture in Linux is correct. Problem is only when I use HDMI cable (but only in Linux).

What I mean is, on your TV there should be a setting called 'PC mode' or 'no overscan' or 'just scan' or something similar.

Basically the fact that the picture is correct when you use the VGA cable but outside when you use the HDMI cable means that your graphics card and Linux are configured correctly, it's your TV that is applying overscan as it thinks you have attached a video source, not a PC source.

Hmm, I downloaded the manual for that TV and couldn't find any way to turn off overscan. However, the fact that it looks correct when hooked up to a Windows computer, tells me it's just a matter of getting the output resolution set just right.

You'll prolly need a custom Modeline. If it's an nvidia card, the folks in the nvidia forum might be able to help: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14

Did you ever fix this? I'm having a similar problem with my Insignia 32" TV - works great in Vista but looks clipped in Ubuntu.

Yes, I fix this problem. When I use VGA cable, then picture is OK. Now my HTPC works only with Linux Mint. My steps are described on my page http://www.petohl.yw.sk/htpclinux.htm but only in Slovak language.

This problem is in LCD TV whitch have native resolution (1360x768) lower then acceptable resolution (1920 x ...) when is connected with HDMI cable.
