Hey everyone, I have had a great experience with my 40GB PS3 for a long time; I never had the fan issues or any other problems I heard others had.

I need to get a new PS3 for my main gaming room (the old one 40 GB will be going to the guest room), So, I am looking at the 160 GB unit.

Are thre any complaints about this unit?
has the fan noise issue been resolved?
anything else?

thnx

why don't you just buy the slim and put in a 500gb hd for 99bux?

Yep, I agree with Goatse, unless you've got a spectacular deal on the 160.

Ditto.

For $400 ($300 for the slim or fat 80gb PS3 + $100 for the HDD) you'll have A LOT more space than you'd get with the 160gb PS3. You could probably even get the HDD for as little as $75. Amazon has great deals on 320gb and 500gb HDDs.

didn't know the drive was easily replaceable in the slim... have many people done it and tested it successfully?

are there fool proof instructions on how to do that?
are there particular HDD models that work best?

thnx

thnxOMG yes...search gilksy on you tube. Also search here at AVS for optical drive failure/laser replacement. Your hardest part will be finding the drive or the components to install. FWIW I hear replacing the laser isn't that hard either. The whole drive is piece of cake to replace.

dogdoctor - wtf? They're talking about replacing the hdd not the optical drive.

For the OP, go read the manual for your PS3, it tells you how to do it in there.

I'd get the slim. The 160gb is as reliable as the latest 80GB but the slim should/is more quiet and cooler.

it takes about 2mins to swap the HD out, its pretty simple.

I'm not 100% sure of this, but I heard it's supposed to be even easier with the slim.

dogdoctor - wtf? "by a while" don't you mean "by a mile"?

I wonder if they changed from the gummy-bear screws holding the hard drive in place to something more rigid. Those things in the launch models would easily strip with barely any pressure behind them. Other than that, changing the HD is a piece of cake.

Well, I think the reason the screws stripped so easily were because people (I'm not saying that you did) tried to take them out without letting their systems cool down first. I know I tried removing my screws while the system wasn't fully cooled down and they stripped but when I changed the HDD on my wife's system, her screws remained in tact because her system wasn't on prior to removing the hdd.

i changed couple out, neither really needed much pressure on the screws.

I have to imagine the screws are better this time around with all the complaints they received! They probaby put the cheap ones in there b/c it saved them $0.01 per system to produce.
