I’ve already asked this, but had posted it in the wrong area. My buddies KDF-42WE655 has developed blotches all over the screen. First it started with a few purple ones in the lower middle of the screen, but now it has spread to a couple Blue, some Yellow, and countless purple spots covering the entire screen. I understand from a response I received to my previous post that this was a known issue and was covered by Sony. He gave me the link to Sony discussing this issue and it says that it was only covered up to Dec. 31st 2008. He is in luck, because he has 3 weeks left on his 4yr extended warrantee from Best Buy. My question is now that Sony doesn’t cover it do you think it’s a expensive fix and Best Buy might opt for just giving him a new TV or is it a relatively easy fix and shouldn’t call for a replacement.?

Hard to say which way it would go... Can't hurt to ask for credit toward a replacement. Who knows maybe they will be flexible.

It is hard to say. I've read that this is a $800 -$1000 dollar fix in some cases, which I doubt this TV is worth that much to Best Buy. Like I told my friend, you might have paid $1500 for this TV, but Best Buy probably only has half that in it. They could give him credit on a $1500 set and probably only truly be out half that amount. Maybe I'm way off on my thinking here.

Well the repair man said it was the optical block and gave a quote of $1200 to fix. He said he doubts Best Buy will want to fix it and they will probably issue a credit. He said that my friend should here something from Best Buy by next Friday. My friend called Best Buy and said they are just waiting to here from the repair man to get it taken care of.

This ended on a good note. Best Buy gave him full credit on the original purchase, which was $1873. He was able to use it for anything in the store, so he bought a Panny G10, Polk Sound Bar, and another 4yr warranty. They ended up taking $200 off the price of all that, so I think he only had $163 out of pocket. He couldn't be happier.
