Hello all,

I am in need of some advice. I have absolutely no experience with video processors, hence my post here.

I recently picked up a Toshiba XA2 HD DVD player after reading about its great upconversion of SD DVDs. After receiving it and trying it out, I can say it really does do a great job of this. Where it isn't so good is its AQ. It's kinda flat sounding. I say this in comparison to the other 2 players I have in house right now, an Upgrade Co.-modded Denon 3910 and a stock Sony 9000es.

I had to put the old Sony into service about a month ago when the Denon went out for service (needed a new transport mechanism). The AQ on the Sony was really really good. Obviously the PQ was so-so, being just 480p. Also, when set at the same resolution, the XA2 upconverted better than the modded Denon (to my eyes).

So, the question is, would using a video processor like the DVDO Edge with the Sony give me a PQ on par with the Toshiba? Thanks.

Bill

In my opinion adding a DVDO Edge to your S9000ES will make the PQ better. I would send a 480i signal from the Sony into the Edge and let it do all the work. The Edge is a great product from all the reviews. I have no experience with the Toshiba.

One question to ask is what are you running your sound through?
Are you going straight to TV or through a receiver?

Sound is going to a Proceed AVP2 prepro via coax/to multiple (4) amps for L/R/C/surrounds/subs.

Hmm, and in all that mess you can't adjust to improve the sound in some way?;) Perhaps let your receiver handle the sound processing? (Assuming there is a receiver in there someplace).

I guess I may be coming from my own set up: Denon DVD 1940ci running through an Onkyo 705. The Denon 1940ci itself has excellent AQ and PQ along with it. I think the Denon also has processors and those special something or other german name things (I can't remember what they are) that helps the AQ. I wasn't too worried about the AQ from the DVD player because I knew I was just going to let my receiver handle the sound processing. It does a great job on SD DVDs and will also play HD DVDs.
