I'm planning on buying Klipsch RF-62's or Energy RC-30's. Currently I have a Harmon Kardon AVR 140. My question is two part 1) which speaker set do you guys recommend? 2) do I need to upgrade my receiver or will this HK be able to handle these (or even a step up) speakers?

I'll probably catch a lot of hell for this but here is my current speaker set up:

fronts - Bose 201
center - Bose VCS 10
rear - Bose dual cubes
sub - Bose (came with rear speakers)

In my defense, I bought these when in college and did no research (I guess that's not really a defense). I'll replace them all eventually but I think front speakers are my priority for now.

You should be posting this in the speaker section. There's tons of info there about the speakers you are looking at already, so you could probably search there a bit and get more info. Also, you should include in your post room size and budget. When you look to replace the fronts, also replace the center at the same time with the same brand and model range speaker.

The HK will drive those speakers fine for now. At some point you may want to upgrade to get newer features.
