View Full Version : Fighting game
boxterduke 08-31-09, 08:53 AM Hey guys, I wanna get a fighting game for my PS3 and I was wondering which one is better.
Street Fighter IV
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe
Soulcalibur IV
Or should I wait until Tekken 6 (date of Oct 27, 2009 on Gamespot)?
number1laing 08-31-09, 09:57 AM Please answer these questions so we can help you more:
1. What are some other fighters you like?
2. Are you a serious fighting game fan?
3. Do you plan on playing online, with friends, or singleplayer only?
4. Would you consider buying a joystick or other peripheral to play?
boxterduke 08-31-09, 10:07 AM Please answer these questions so we can help you more:
1. What are some other fighters you like?
I like the Dead or Alive games on the xbox (I had the od xbox before and DoA was my favorite)
2. Are you a serious fighting game fan?
Not a serious fan, I just like to casually play them
3. Do you plan on playing online, with friends, or singleplayer only?
Singleplayer and when friends come over.
4. Would you consider buying a joystick or other peripheral to play?
Nah, just the PS3 controller.
Thanks for the help :)
number1laing 08-31-09, 10:09 AM Based on your answers SF4 is a no-go. I'd go with Soul Calibur IV actually.
I haven't played the others, but Soul Calibur IV is quality stuff.
number1laing 08-31-09, 10:31 AM I'm planning to pick up the PSP game this week.
confidenceman 08-31-09, 10:51 AM I agree with number1laing. Go with Soul Calibur 4. It's the most fun of those you listed to just screw around with.
SF4 is too techical, especially with just the standard DS3. MKvDC is a total pass. Of course, you didn't list the best fighting game yet this gen: BlazBlue! (but it's at least as technical as SF4).
boxterduke 08-31-09, 11:06 AM I've seen people mention Bluebalze and I checked the gameplay videos on youtube and it looks interesting.
I want something that is easy and does not have like a million moves and combos to remember since I kinda like to play all characters and not just focus on one.
joeblow 08-31-09, 11:11 AM Soul Calibur 4 and Tekken 6 are easy enough for casuals to mash out impressive looking setups. I'd recommend those two. If you ever wanted to shoot for serious improvement, I'd say go with Tekken 6 since there will be more people to play against, and you won't have to deal with imbalanced Hilde in SC4.
Agreed. Casual gamers should stick to tekken, though personally I could never stand the franchise. I was a big SC fan till 3 came out, they haven't gone in a positive direction w/ the mechanics for me. MK & DC is great if you were an MK fan, but over all play is stiff and moves are pretty corney.
confidenceman 08-31-09, 12:47 PM I want something that is easy and does not have like a million moves and combos to remember since I kinda like to play all characters and not just focus on one. Then definitely don't get BlazBlue.
IMO it would be Soul Calibur. I didn't play much of the older ones, but when I picked up SC4 for PS3 and started playing with some friends I really got in to it. There are a lot of varying characters and weapons (customization too) that make for some really fun gameplay. It also isn't too hard to pull off awesome moves as a beginner, and once you become familiar with the game and the characters you can really pull off some sweet stuff. Graphics are great and you can also play as Darth Vader and Yoda, which is cool if you like Star Wars.
I used to love Tekken, but I have a hard time going back to it after Soul Calibur b/c Tekken's gameplay feels so dated. Every game feels like the last, but I'm not sure if Tekken 6 will be a step forward or not. Street Fighter is always fun, but it's tough to get in to it if you haven't always been a fan. Playing that game online is a death wish if you're a novice. Definitely pass on MK/DC Universe unless you just happen to be a gigantic MK fan or something.
I'm pretty sure you can get a copy of Soul Calibur pretty cheap too. Great game.

Just to be clear, I put Tekken and SC4 in the category of "easy to play, difficult to master" category. Namco purposely made sure you can do cool looking stuff as a beginner, but at high-level play both titles can be two of the most hardcore games around.
I think you would like SC4 since you like DOA4. Though, I believe SF4 is better, and can be a fun casual game as well, so that's my vote.
number1laing 08-31-09, 01:51 PM SF4 is a brilliant game but the singleplayer is rubbish and its very technical.
If you and a friend get into Soul Calibur, you'll be amazed at some of the battles you'll have against each other. The best experience I've ever had with a fighting game personally.
*I'm more of a 3D fighting fan, so I think that's another reason I prefer it over Street Fighter, which uses 2D gameplay with 3D graphics.
Zookster 08-31-09, 03:33 PM Soul Calibur 4 was the first fighting game I ever picked up. I liked the looks and 3-d graphics so I figured if I was ever going to get a game to play with my girlfriend, who really liked the fighting games when she had a PS1, SC4 was it. 30 hours later and some severe soreness in all my hand joints, I still love it. The characters' cheesy campy lines crack me up every time. Lots of fun for casual gameplay, but as someone else said, difficult to master.
maximuslcd 08-31-09, 03:42 PM It's been awhile since I've played soul caliber, but I can tell you I hated street fighter.
Tekken is a game that I have been a fan of since the ps1 days. I just loaded up tekken 5 dark res and played it the other night.
Robocop2 08-31-09, 04:06 PM Add another for Soul Calibur IV. Out of everything you've listed, its probably the easiest to just pick up and play and do pretty well at; at least until you get to the Apprentice.
Another vote for SCIV here since you like DOA.
Tekken 6 BY FAR. Kills SC4. And MKvDC is like a joke fighting game. Not even considerable.
SF4 would be the most competitive and exciting of all, and you'd get the most out of it if you were REALLY into it, but it sounds like you are just playing for fun. Tekken 6 is perfect for that because as deep as the game is, it's very "mash" friendly.
I play SF4 competitively and I have actually played a lot of T6, so I actually have experience with it. Wait for Tekken 6, trust me.

You've played a lot of Tekken 6? Is it much different than 5? It used to be my favorite fighting game back on PS2. But lately I've become bored with the Tekken series because it just seems like all they do is give it a graphical facelift and add a few new characters each time. Gameplay is dated IMO...but I haven't played 6.
joeblow 08-31-09, 08:53 PM T6 is the same Tekken just as SFIV is the same Street Fighter. You have to choose new franchises if you want completely new experiences.

Guess that's why I like SC4 so much. I hadn't owned a SC game before then. Played a little of it back in the day on Dreamcast (or was it Gamecube?) so it was new to me.
lwright84 08-31-09, 10:52 PM Sc4 wasn't very enjoyable to me.. Like at all. Mine is up for sale along with vf5 actually. Mk v dc is actually quite fun if you don't take it too seriously or for parties. I'd go with wait for tekken 6 or pick up mk v dc at a good price used somewhere and tide you over til t6. :)
blklightning 08-31-09, 11:28 PM ufc 2009 is pretty sweet, imo. the career mode is pretty short. but playing with friends is a blast.

On that note, Fight Night is even better!
*I own both. UFC is really good, but Fight Night is great!
SC4 is terrible, but VF5 is probably the most respectable fighting game ever. Most technical fighting game by far.
SC4 isn't terrible. Even if you don't care for it, it's not terrible.
There is definately a faction of fighting game hardcore players who would agree w/ Lee. It's a matter of what attributes one looks for in a fighting game.
Agree to disagree. Guess I'm not hardcore enough! :)
Well, it's a good game. Well made and polished, but for a fighting game, its bad. Not DOA bad, but it's bad. (there are way worse, but I'm talking of the popular games -- games like MKvsDC and all that don't even count)

Played Tekken 6? I thought it is not out yet?

I guess the balance isn't quite even from character to character on some of them, so I'd imagine that would be an issue for hardcore fighting fans. But if you learn each character, there are ways to win with or defeat any of them. And you're right, very polished with excellent graphics. Overall a lot of fun for me and my friends, but I can see how it isn't every fighting fans' cup of tea.
Tekken 6: BR is at THREE Chicago area arcades.
Porsche 911 09-01-09, 01:46 PM What? No mention of Ragdoll Kung Fu?
Tekken 6: BR is at THREE Chicago area arcades.
That's cool. Didn't know they still put out new games like that in the arcades!

They're all imported. Just like the other new fighting game cabinets. America sucks.
joeblow 09-01-09, 02:16 PM Yeah, the arcade scene has slipped a ton. Fortunately we have two Tekken 6 machines around here, but across the country pickings are slim.
confidenceman 09-01-09, 03:05 PM Yeah, the best way to get an arcade experience is just to get a bunch of people together to play at someone's house. I don't know anyone with a homemade cabinet, but plenty of folks I know have arcade sticks. Close enough. :p
ResOGlas 09-01-09, 08:22 PM None of the poll options.
Get King of Fighters XII, or BlazBlue.
Two TERRIBLE recommendations based on who is asking and what they have told us about their fighting game experience and desires.

Online gaming killed the arcade.
Online gaming killed the arcade.
I never realized that, thanks.
Every game charging more than 25 cents didn't help either.
confidenceman 09-02-09, 06:31 AM Online gaming killed the arcade.Just like CDs killed the Victrola? :D
You're missing a step. Cheap console gaming killed the arcade. The arcades were already in their death-throes when fighting games were at their height (early '90s). Blame Nintendo for killing the arcades in America.
And I bet a gaming historian would tell you that it had more to do with how far arcade venues were stretching themselves in the early '90s (constructing huge entertainment centers), and how expensive and elaborate arcade development was becoming--especially compared to the cheap-to-develop console gaming market. In fact, the arcade industry looked then a bit like the HD console market looks now. Expensive, bloated, over-ambitious, and increasingly niche. ;)
lwright84 09-02-09, 08:03 AM Online gaming killed the arcade.
I would say that combined with Gameworks\Dave&Busters having all the best games (subjective, of course) and then charging $3.00 a play put all the good arcade-only places out of business.
number1laing 09-02-09, 09:34 AM The reason arcades died was because you could buy a reasonably close version of arcade games for $40-$60, and didn't have to deal with all the vagaries of arcades. True, many many people loved those vagaries (and want them back), but clearly more people wanted to play games in the comfort of their homes, with their friends, without 13 year olds that are there every day beating them, smoky dingy arcades, etc.
The same thing happened to PC games a few years back when the Xbox 1, then 360 and PS3 were able to make reasonable versions of what used to be games only workable on a PC. PC gaming is reinventing itself and doing a lot better than arcades, but it's the same basic dynamic.
ToddUGA 09-02-09, 10:45 AM Ahhh the arcades. I miss them. Heck, I miss them so much I built a MAME cabinet to relive those days. And amazingly enough, the PC version of Street Fighter IV works wonderfully on it. SFIV+real arcade joysticks and buttons=heaven. :)
Sorry for getting off-topic. :)
Yeah, I remember the good old days of going to the mall and spending hours in the arcade with my cousin while the rest of our family shopped all day. I can remember sinking token after token into those things, wishing I would somebody own a gaming system capable of that much awesomeness. Then I got a Playstation when I was about 13 and stopped caring too much about the arcades. Plus, they started charging way too much for only a couple minutes on a game. I still relive those days occasionally though when I get hammered and go to the local Dave & Busters type place.
Oh, and to keep this post within this thread's topic, I voted for Soul Calibur 4!
boxterduke 12-18-09, 04:38 PM Hey guys so I still did not get a game yet but I saw Tekken 6 for $29.99 at FS until the 24th.
So now since Tekken 6 is out should I get it over Soul Calibur 4?
confidenceman 12-18-09, 05:40 PM Hey guys so I still did not get a game yet but I saw Tekken 6 for $29.99 at FS until the 24th.
So now since Tekken 6 is out should I get it over Soul Calibur 4?I was disappointed with Tekken 6, and the online is still seriously sub-par even after the patch.
Regardless, for ~$40, you should be able to get both titles.

This is correct. Online gaming had nothing to do with the demise of the Arcade
