View Full Version : god of war I and II rerelease on bluray!
rjsanc30 02-18-10, 04:36 PM Step 1: get a divorce, sell the first house, quit your job, sign up for welfare, and put the kids up for adoption.
Step 2: If you saved your Rage of the Gods meter, you can use that to easily beat them by saving it for when they are really hurt, then using RotG to fuel unlimited magic spamming. This way, you can send out Hades spirits and spam Posiden's AoE attack multiple times before it ends. You can hug your family to give them back life just as RotG ends to maximize the benefit.
Mainly though, do combos that end with the double horizontal clear out move at the end (knocks down a good range of foes), as well as ones with the double vertical slam that knocks them up. Use your Posiden's AoE magic when it gets too crowded.
With the state of the world today those steps may not be avoidable or so far fetched. I could never, never, never divorce my wife though......she'd go straight for all the HT/PS3 gear, and give me full custody of the boys....she knows too well how to hurt me:)
Thanks for the advice, hopefully I'll get an opportunity this evening to give it shot...sure would like to move onto and finish GOWII before III releases.
Filipinoyakuza 02-18-10, 08:26 PM Alright so I've been working on the challenge of the gods, but challenge # 6 is really just kicking my ass. It's crazy because you only have I think 35 seconds to make it across and you have to jump onto 3 or 4 moving platforms while you have archers constantly shooting at you.
I tried beating it the way this person did it on this video but still can't get passed it.
<object width="640" height="505"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/U7UkXF7uW5M&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b&hd=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/U7UkXF7uW5M&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b&hd=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="505"></embed></object>
Anyone else can help me out on this challenge ?
I personally liked 2 more than 1, but that was because of 1's lack of boss battles.
This is actually why I liked 1 more. Had better flow and was just more fun. The constant boss battles and the trial and error that followed put a speed bump in the flow IMO for part 2, and it was not as much fun because of it. Still a great game though of course, but I hope 3 is not overloaded with boss battles like 2.
AceStallion 06-10-10, 03:19 PM I played GOW3 recently and loved it..even more than i loved Dante's Inferno. The combos are amazing, the graphics are unparalled, and the story line is classic. Good game for its price but i got mine on wavee so price wasnt a problem.
Graphics: 8/10
-Graphics are amazing but the camera movement is a little hard to get used too. Kinda made me dizzy
Controls: 10/10
-easy controls and the combos are really cool.
Story: 10/10
-i mean who DOESNT like greek mythology?!?
Replay: 6/10
-Its a very fun game, but i dont think ill play it again after beating it.
Sound: 8/10
-good soundtrack and battle noises.
Uniqueness: 8/10
-very unique game and gameplay...the part where you kill Hades at the beginning is unlike anything ive ever seen or played.

That's nice of you to congratulate him, but he failed again. He is posting a review for God of War 3 in the God of War I & II re-rerelease thread. :p

Ah well, can't say I didn't try. :p
drummernrg 07-26-10, 08:28 PM I'm nearly done playing GoW I from the Collection on hard mode, I'd played it originally on my PS2 a long time ago once and I'm sure I lowered the combat difficulty to easy back then.
I'd read Joe Blow's commentary on GoW here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=17957304#post17957304 and wanted to follow up with a question, so this was the appropriate forum thread to post.
I've really been enjoying it again, I'd forgotten some of the detail and greatness of how the entire experience and story flowed together. With the help of some walkthroughs, I've finally understood how to work towards strings of combos to raise the meter and get bonus orbs and I've worked power up most of my weapons earlier on in the game, so things have really been more enjoyable -- even on hard mode. I'm at the end of the game (Ares battle) but had only recently got the Blades of Chaos maxed out, so I didn't get to experiment much.
If I replay GoW I in Spartan mode, I want to understand how JoeBlow got to be a chain ground and aerial moves/cancel master. Can anyone elaborate on some of the techniques he spoke about in the posting I mentioned above? I've not really found any resources. Thanks.
joeblow 07-26-10, 09:12 PM Well, that write up was not so much about mastering certain, specific chains as it was about encouraging people to play sandbox style and just experiment with fun custom combos. What might help you is if I spell out some of the cool things you can do, and then you can make up your own complex setups in GoW I. These examples are for the dual blades.
- Kratos as regular attacks that he can do in the air, as well as aerial power moves if you hold L1. After a 2x jump, you can usually complete two full aerial power moves before you hit the ground (i.e. L1+X, L1+X). However, just before you hit the ground, you can often finish with a power dive by tapping R1.
- That power dive slams the ground and can stun you for awhile before you can walk or attack again. However, you can cancel that delay by tapping the right analog in order to roll towards your enemy.
- The roll itself can be canceled into a shoulder rush (R1) or chained into a leaping low launcher (X). Remember - the roll has initial invincibility frames so you always want to keep that in mind to avoid damage.
- If you use the shoulder rush (whether canceled from the roll or not), you are stunned similar to the power dive above, but you can cancel the recovery time with a jump or 2x jump.
- If you finish a roll with X (the leaping low launcher), neither you nor the enemy will be knocked up high, but you have time for one aerial power attack (i.e. L1+/\), and can follow that up with a R1 power dive before you land like before, which can be canceled into a roll, etc.
That's not everything, but once you start trying it out your mind opens up to mix and match with other ideas. You'll notice that the window to link some of this stuff together is pretty tight, but nothing that can't be handled with practice.
Pay attention to how the attacks affect different enemies and crowds, so you can more easily choose custom combos that effective keep you hitting them while they are stunned. Not everything works well on all monsters, so try out a lot of different moves (even those I didn't mention) to see in what situations they may be useful in your custom strings. Also, play around with the sword the same way and see what you can come up with.
Lastly, magic tricks can be pretty crazy in this game. Take a look at just one example. ;)

Dashboard 07-27-10, 09:19 AM I actually finished GOWII this week-end playing the original PS2 on my 60Gb model.
Now I need to pick GOWIII when it comes down in price.

drummernrg 07-27-10, 02:35 PM Thanks a lot, JoeBlow, I appreciate you sharing the advice. The related videos to the example you cited also show some crazy (glitchy?) things that I will try out.
In PoP: The Forbidden Sands, there are three arenas where you battle waves of enemies -- it is there that I finally felt comfortable to experiment with combat, but during the game I play more conservatively in order to progress. I'll experiment with GoW combat on my next play through or on the Challenges.
joeblow 07-29-10, 10:07 AM It probably goes without saying, but just to make sure it's clear you can connect almost all of those individual setups to one another for longer and longer attack chains. I divided them into smaller info pieces so that you can see how each one works on its own, but as you get more practice you'll see how smoothly one setup flows into another one (depending on the enemy), and so on.
One other minor mention is that the roll, shoulder charge, 2x jump and aerial dive stomp are all excellent moves to use once you are ready to switch focus from one enemy (or group of enemies) to someone coming at you from the other direction. As long as you are pointing in a different direction towards the new threat for these moves, you can go from one skirmish to the next while you are in the middle of your custom attack strings without stopping your flow too much.
drummernrg 07-29-10, 05:09 PM Thanks again, there is so much more to this game when you dig... just the different ways to run forward quickly!
I've heard rumor of a 55 minute speed run though *the entire game*, but here's a 2h16m run documented: http://speeddemosarchive.com/GodOfWar.html
joeblow 10-20-10, 12:52 PM *** OCTOBER 2010 UPDATE ***
The GoW collection will be added (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/10/20/god-of-war-collection-on-the-playstation-store-112/) to the PSN on November 2nd as a download. You get both games in HD, but none of the extras or bonus materials found in the Blu-ray version. No pricing info yet, but I'll make a guess of $20. However they've been launching new PSN games for $15 each for awhile so I wont be surprised if this comes out at $30.
drummernrg 10-20-10, 04:33 PM I'm sure the Trophies will still be there!
drummernrg 10-20-10, 04:38 PM Ok, Joe - got any advice for conquering GoW2: Inner Sanctum (before the Loom)? I am having trouble surviving this gauntlet: it is a downward sloping, spiral ramp with force field sections and seven waves of enemies.
I can get most of the way through it on hard, but I imagine I'm not blocking enough and parrying the enemies because my health winds down too quickly at the end. Or maybe I'm not taking to the air enough, I'm just not sure what it takes to get through more unscathed! A second enemy always takes me out while dealing with another.
joeblow 10-20-10, 05:24 PM I tend to freestyle to try different approaches, but here are a few straight-forward tips if you just want to get past it:
- Earthquake magic is good for doing a lot of damage to crowds, so weaken enemies with it in new, tough areas.
- Small enemies can often be used to toss at bigger foes when the grab icon lights up. It does good damage, and most importantly you are invulnerable during the animation. Get more magic from QTE grappling with Gorgons.
- With your weapon of choice, get a few licks in then roll away from danger, then repeat. You are invulnerable when rolling, and using this skill also helps keep you from being surrounded. Always try to have your enemies on one side of you.
- For smaller enemies, just as they swing a weapon you need to parry their attacks and then auto-blast them with the ground pounding counter. That knocks away and damages the enemies around you.
- For the Gorgons, reflect their stone stare with a parry to turn them and other nearby foes into rock for easy kills.
- Stay out of the air when fighting Gorgons because a stone stare will instantly kill you if you are jumping.
- Big enemies can be beaten safely if you simply hit them lightly a few times then roll to safety. It takes longer doing it this way however.
- When killing big enemies, grab them when stunned and use the finisher that will release health orbs.
- Grab the staff wielding acrobats, then tap O to try and damage them. This works best if you kill off other enemies first.
- You don't have to open up the blue/red orb chests right away when you reach them. Wait until you have to and then come all the way back to recharge.

What level is your Barbarian Hammer? When I played thru on Titan, I could NOT make it through there with the Blades. I upgraded my hammer to level 3, although I think the 2nd level would be enough as well. Most enemies could be dispatched more quickly by the triangle, triangle attack. Tap block between this attack to cancel the animation, and you can attack faster.
I find that Cronos Rage works better for me because I can drop multiple lightning balls which freeze some enemies, then keep on attacking. Cronos rage also uses less of your magic.
