View Full Version : Panasonic G10/V10 & Onkyo HDMI handshake issues
amstel78 08-31-09, 03:39 PM A recent press release was issued regarding the new 2009 Panasonic plasma sets and HDMI handshake problems with certain Onkyo receviers:
2009-08-11
Several owners of HDMI-equipped Onkyo home cinema receivers, notably the TX-SR607, have reported that they are encountering problems when connecting their products to recently manufactured Panasonic G10 and V10 series flatscreen TVs.
A joint investigation between Onkyo and Panasonic has concluded this is caused by a firmware incompatibility.
Panasonic will shortly be offering a Firmware Update to solve the problem. Existing owners of G10 and V10 series flatscreen TVs should contact the Panasonic Customer Support Department for further information on obtaining the update.
Tel: 0844 844 3852
E-mail: customer.care@panasonic.co.uk
Subsequent production of the G10 and V10 series TVs will not be affected by the issue.
I've just gotten of the phone with Panasonic USA support, and they have information regarding the issue, but weren't able to give me specifics. They have however scheduled a local company to send a tech out to provide a firmware update.
Basically, the problem for me manifests itself when attempting to pass through or output 1080p from my Onkyo TX-NR905 receiver to the V10. 9 times out of 10, I would get audio sync, but no video. Instead of video, I'd get snow or static on screen that would intermittently flash on and off. Switching between inputs sometimes corrected the problem, but more often than not would not help. Connecting my devices directly to the Panasonic exhibited no problems at all.
Original thread here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1171053
I'm curious as to why Panasonic USA wouldn't just release the update online to their customers like Panasonic UK would?
Has anyone else here experienced 1080p handshake issues with their new Panasonic plasma set and Onkyo receiver? My TX-NR905 is on its way back to me from United Radio as Onkyo USA told me it was an HDMI board failure. United Radio however couldn't replicate my issue with their test equipment, which led me to search and discover this press release. I've been without my receiver for almost a month now, and am quite aggravated at the run around I've been getting...
rotemben 08-31-09, 05:03 PM I spent hours with Panasonic USA Support and they didn't even acknowledge there was an issue.
Do you mind PM'ing me a case number or anything i can use with them to have them read their own damn info?
Thanks!!!!!!
amstel78 08-31-09, 05:10 PM Well, my case # is 26802570. Unfortunately there is no general reference number that I know of for this problem here in the USA.
When I spoke to Panasonic USA today, the rep told me that they had just gotten information in regarding HDMI issues and G/V 10 televisions. The rep wouldn't be specific regarding what particular problems were being reported. He did go on to state that in this particular case, it looks like a tech will have to come out and perform the update themselves. I found that odd, but hey, if it fixes my problems then that's fine.
Here's the Onkyo Europe website where I found this info:
http://www.eu.onkyo.com/press/press_release_en_8597907.html
Edit: more info regarding this problem from another forum:

amstel78 08-31-09, 05:15 PM Well, I spoke too soon. I just received a call from the local AV tech who stated that after researching the problem, and calling the Panasonic field rep, no firmware update yet exists for this issue in the USA! So now, I'm back to square one and have to wait for Panasonic's engineers to either a) talk to their people in the UK, and modify the European firmware to work on our sets, or b) come up with a different solution to this problem.
So aggravating...
rotemben 08-31-09, 06:31 PM unbelievable...
dstedman 08-31-09, 07:28 PM Here is the reply I got from Panasonic regarding this issue with my G10 and Onkyo 876 (sigh):
Thank you for your inquiry.
There is no firmware for this TV and you may have to reconnect the units
to get them to work together.
Thank you for contacting Panasonic.
Thank You,
Panasonic Consumer Support
amstel78 08-31-09, 08:55 PM ^^^ Well, I'm hoping Panasonic does the right thing, and release that firmware to us Onkyo/Panny owners here in the USA.
I just received my response from Panasonic Canada.
"Thank you for your e-mail. Please be advised that we have no reported issues with our Panasonic Plasma TVs not working with any type of Receiver on the market."
"Sincerely,

Panasonic Canada Inc."
WOW...... A flat out lie. I can't afford to buy another receiver. And after spending 3300.00 of my hard earned coin, for a near top of the line T.V that just came out on to the market, only to have it sit on stand waiting for an update.......NO THANKS.

Did you forward the press release to Panasonic Canada? If you did, and they still responded like such, then that's unfortunate.
I've asked the technician looking into my case to forward the press release to the USA engineering team, with hopes that they'll get the firmware from their European offices.
amstel78 09-01-09, 09:57 AM Anyone else with this problem out there? Any chance this thread can be made a temporary sticky until the problem is resolved? I believe as more and more people purchase G10 or V10 sets and have Onkyo receivers, this problem will become more apparent.
T Morris 09-01-09, 10:51 AM I should find out this weekend whether I will experience the problem as the 58V10 warranty replacement my 58PZ750U will be delivered on Friday. Everything is already routed through my TX-SR805 so I'll throw a BR into the DMP30 and see what happens.

Ensure that you set the output of your Onkyo to 1080p, or at the very least set it to pass through and have the device output 1080p. This is where the problem seems to be, as if you set the Onkyo to 1080i or lower, there isn't a problem.
You'll know right away if you have this problem.
I should be able to report back on this soon as well, I currently have everything running through my Onkyo 875 upscaled to 1080p and my 58V10 is supposed to arrive Weds/Thurs pending delivery. If I do encounter the issue I guess I'll switch the Onkyo to output 1080i for now and of course contact Panasonic... from reading on the issue over at AVForums the issue is mainly with upscaling to 1080p so hopefully pass through 1080p from my PS3 works fine. We shall see.

When I emailed them, I attached a link to the press release. They still denied there was any problem or that there would be any firmware released.
dstedman 09-01-09, 11:32 AM BTW - I can usually get my G10 to display 1080p Onkyo-upconverted video from my 8300HD box for the first few channel changes. It's when I go from a 1080i source to a SD source that it chokes and gives me the screen of snow (with audio working fine, of course). And sometimes my Panny Blue Ray player will do it as well (BDP-60) & I'll have restart everything to get it to handshake and work correctly. I can't believe they are on HDMI 1.3 and they still have so many handshake problems.

You don't want the the Onkyo 805 to do ANY processing. Leave it on pass-through. The processor in the 805 is terrible. Pass through only!!
I have a tx-sr705 and a G10.
My handshake is just delayed. The audio comes through almost immediately, but it often takes 10-20secs for the picture to come through. Sometimes I get the static for a moment, but mostly just a black screen until the image comes through.

In my case, all I usually see is the snow/static screen regardless of whether I'm switching from 1080p to 1080p source or anything else to 1080p. For example, I might get the 905 and V10 to handshake fine when using the BD80 in pass through, but the minute I switch over to my 360 (also outputting 1080p), then I lose video. Going back to the BD80, it will sometimes connect again, but usually once I lose video, then it's gone unless I finagle the settings.
amstel78 09-01-09, 12:15 PM Well, I don't know if I'm making any progress with Panasonic, but I called them back today and the rep promised to have someone from management or engineering call me back to get more details. They also asked me to fax to them a copy of the press statement. I'll keep this thread updated...
warpdrive 09-01-09, 12:18 PM I have this problem with my 875, V10 and PS3. Static ensues often.
I moved my 875 to a different system, and bought a Denon receiver....no more problems.
Shouldn't have to by a new receiver. I'll buy a Samsung before i buy another receiver.

Well, that's one way to get around the issue. :D
I wouldn't mind replacing the Onkyo 905 with a Yamaha RX-Z7, but my wife would kill me. Plus, it's a matter of principle; if Panasonic UK can fix this problem for their customers, why can't Panasonic USA follow suit and do the same??

Yikes, don't like the sound of that as I won't be upgrading my 875 anytime soon. Assume your 875 was set to pass through the 1080p signal from the PS3?
amstel78 09-01-09, 01:29 PM Well, I guess being persistent is a good thing.
Heard back from my tech today who was in touch with the field rep and the engineering team. According to the tech, the engineers at Panasonic USA are aware of this problem... however, Panasonic USA is still reluctant to admit that the problem is on their end (even though Panasonic UK already has). It seems however that all we can do at this point is wait.
I suggest to everyone out there facing this issue is to call Panasonic support and log a call with them. Give them the details of the press release.

Even if you set the AVR to pass-through, the handshake problem is still there on my 905. The only time it goes away is if I set the AVR to output at a lower resolution; i.e. 1080i or 720p.
Understood... but if you have the PS3 set to 1080p is the AVR actualling downscaling from 1080p to 1080i in that situation? Or do you have the PS3 set to output 1080i as well?

How right you are. I've alway's keep mine in pass through anyway.
dssturbo1 09-01-09, 02:54 PM amstel78.....
do you know which firmware version you had in your 905?
if you sent it to a service center hopefully they will update it if needed with the latest Onkyo firmware for the 905. the early firmware like 1.01 had issues and there were at least a couple firmware updates like 1.05 and 1.08 that helped with connection issues and also a audio or dsp?? update seperate from the regular firmware updates.
Did you have any issues with a previous display and the 905?
I have an Integra DTR 8.8 which is the high end cousin to the 905. after I loaded the 1.08 firmware and the audio/dsp it has behaved pretty well hooked up to my Pioneer 60" Elite. I still have an hdmi handshake issue come up but it's rare.
Pretty sure most of the onkyo x05 model lineup needed those firmware upgrades, not sure about the x06 and x07 models. In the past it was hard to even get Onkyo/Integra to release the firmware. Or send a unit in for update. I had to contact them and then they sent an email form that i had to sign and fax return to them. Then they sent a firmware disc that i had to load into my DTR 8.8 through the RS232 port. Anthother problem was some of the midrange unts like the 805/705/605 i think did not even have that RS232 access and had to have a special rig setup to connect to the unit. There should be a thread in the amp/receiver section about onkyo firmware updates and getting one of those rigs for the 805/705/605 if others have older firmware and issues.
hope you get the 905 and V10 working soon.
here is the Onkyo/Integra firmware thread, gurkey has done alot to help and try to keep it updated.

umm..... we 805 owner's prefer the term "midrange":D

Nice job, Amstel! I really hope someone steps up to fix this - sounds like it should be Panasonic. I might try updating the firmware on my Onkyo 876 to the latest just to see if it helps, but at this point it seems unlikely.
Hmm... I updated my 875 shortly after I got it to the 1.04 firmware and I've downloaded the latest (1.08) but have yet to update. Perhaps that will help resolve any potential HDMI issues?

Do you know what firmware rev your 875 is at warpdrive? This info would help others in the same boat...
rotemben 09-01-09, 03:18 PM So,
Just called them again and they said my case was reviewed and they need to send someone to install an authorized-installer-only firmware something.
I asked them if it's different than the one I just updated to from the internet and they said yes.
Weird, and sounds too good to be true, but I'll Know September 4th if it helped in anyway.
Better than sitting and waiting i guess :(

rotemben 09-01-09, 03:19 PM BTW, how would i go about updating my "new" Re-conditioned 806?
Do i need to get a special RS-232 cable or something?

Hello dssturbo1,
The firmware in my Onkyo is currently at 1.09. I've tried though with 1.05, 1.07, and 1.08 - same story. My 905 was finally sent to United Radio (prior to me knowing about this press release) because Onkyo USA thought I had a bad HDMI board. United Radio couldn't replicate the problem with their test monitor and equipment, so the unit is on its way back. In other words, the HDMI board tested fine per Onkyo and United Radio's test standards.
This is definitely an issue with the Panasonic TV.

I doubt it. I've gone through 1.05, 1.07, 1.08, and now 1.09 in my 905 and still no dice. :(

Do i need to get a special RS-232 cable or something?
All you need to update your firmware is a straight through DB9 male to female serial cable. I updated mine with such a cable purchased from monoprice and even used a USB to Serial adapter. All firmware updates to my 905 went fine via this method.

That's a good question, and something I myself am curious about as well.
On my V10, if I have the 905 set to 1080i, the TV will state the input signal is 1080i also... so perhaps I've already answered my own question. LOL. Too many beers at lunch is a bad thing. :D
dssturbo1 09-01-09, 03:51 PM I use my DTR 8.8 on Pass Through only as my Pioneer Elite does a better job on processing then the Reon VX. I've got an Oppo BDP-83, a Directv HD DVR, Toshihba HD A35 and a Tivo S3 all connected by 3' Monoprice HDMI cables. $9500+ of equipment connected with $5 cables..lol, works great = gotta love it:)~
When I do have a rare handshake issue it comes up a blank screen and i can change to another input then back to the intended input and it always connects fine then.
I have an Onkyo PR-SC886 preamp and I run it on Pass-Through. The Onkyo was previously used with my Panasonic 50 Inch 850U with no handshaking issues. My new 58V10 (set up yesterday) has had a few white fuzzy screen handshaking issues at turn on. A change of input back and forth appears to correct the problem. However, the issue definitely appears to be a Panasonic issue and not an Onkyo issue, since I had no issue with the Onkyo 886 with the 850U. I need to check this out a bit more this weekend.
amstel78 09-01-09, 05:05 PM Gostan, consider yourself fortunate that a simple input switch back and forth fixes things. I probably wouldn't mind so much if that were the same thing happening to me. In my case, the TV and Onkyo become unusable, and getting it to sync can sometimes take up to an hour!
I've just received this reply to my second e-mail.
"Thank you for writing again. Please be advised that our Quality Assurance Group has been in contact with our factory who has confirmed that they are currently in the process of developing a firmware fix for this issue. It should be available within the next week or two. Thank you."

Panasonic UK from what I've read has been mailing people SD cards with the update on it. They do have to mail them back once finished.
That would be ok as well..... the sooner the better.

This is really good news. You're having better luck than I so far. Panasonic USA hasn't really mentioned anything specific to me directly. I've only been getting my info from the 3rd party technician assigned to my case.
amstel78 09-02-09, 11:00 AM Anyone else having problems with their Onkyo and G10/V10 sets handshaking? I'm surprised that the responses have been limited to only a few owners.
My TV is being delivered this afternoon and I'm ready to connect to my 875, will post an update shortly. Hopefully with good news.
And i'll have mine on Friday, so we'll have a few more reports by the weekend.
amstel78 09-02-09, 02:40 PM Well I hope that Vise and PSBMAN have better luck than I do with their Onkyo/Panasonic combinations. If not though, please update this thread.
This really is an issue, at least for me and a few others and I think the more we publicize it, the faster Panasonic will act.
btran33 09-02-09, 04:34 PM I have an Onkyo PR-SC886 preamp and I run it on Pass-Through. The Onkyo was previously used with my Panasonic 50 Inch 850U with no handshaking issues. I also have Onkyo 886 Preamp and Panasonic 50G10. I did have a few hand shack problem between the preamp and TV when I first installed the TV; but I quickly found out that the power-on order is very important. For some reason, the Preamp (onkyo) has to be on First, then follow by the Dish Network-HD box, and the TV last has solve the problem. I setup the macro on my universal remote to do just that and have not have any hand shack problem since then. Hope this help.
warpdrive 09-02-09, 07:38 PM I moved my 875 to a different system, and bought a Denon receiver....no more problems.
Well, that's one way to get around the issue. :D
When I first got my V10 and turned it on, all I got was static with the PS3 as the source, it freaked me out.
I've been eyeing the Denons because I *really* wanted a receiver that had Dynamic EQ/Volume, and this was the perfect excuse. I had a new spot to move the Onkyo to, and to be frank, I was pretty tired of its slow switching times (the Denon resyncs the signal in two seconds after I switch to a channel with a different resolution)
None of the firmware updates improved the situation for me.
grolla1 09-02-09, 09:12 PM Anyone else having problems with their Onkyo and G10/V10 sets handshaking? I'm surprised that the responses have been limited to only a few owners.
I've been pulling my hair out trying to get my Onkyo 706 and G10 to play nicely together. I'm getting the same cycling white snow/black screen/white snow problem as everyone else. I received an email from Panasonic UK on 08/14/09 that they would be shipping an SD card, but nothing has arrived yet.
This was before I realized that it probably wouldn't work on my USA G10. I did find this link to update a UK G10:
http://rapidshare.com/files/272584725/UK_G10_Update.rar
This is apparently what is on the UK SD cards. Has anyone had any luck using this UK update on a USA model?
So I am getting handshake issues with my 58V10 and Onkyo 875 with output set to 1080p. :(
It actually works fine on first start up but I get static/snow when switching inputs (ie. from Cable to PS3). For now I've changed the output on the Onkyo to 1080i and it fixes the issue... however I will be shooting an email off to Panasonic Canada shortly to see about getting me a firmware update.

It actually works fine on first start up but I get static/snow when switching inputs (ie. from Cable to PS3). For now I've changed the output on the Onkyo to 1080i and it fixes the issue... however I will be shooting an email off to Panasonic Canada shortly to see about getting me a firmware update.
Do you get it on Pass-through as well? Or only if the 875 is doing the processing?
Do you get it on Pass-through as well? Or only if the 875 is doing the processing?
Interesting... I tried it earlier set to pass through and could have sworn I got static/snow when switching over to my PS3 (set to 1080p). Just tried it again though and it appears to be working fine? This appears to be a better solution for now, will let the TV handle the scaling until the new firmware is available.
May have spoke too soon, everything was working well until I went to exit out of a blu-ray movie back to the XMB on the PS3... the TV/receiver would not sync up, got the dreaded static/snow screen. I was able to flip back to my cable box from there without an issue though so will probably leave it in pass through mode for now.
Must say the 96hz mode for blu-ray looked amazing though.
Bill Mac 09-02-09, 11:25 PM I have pretty much decided on the 58V10 to replace my TH-50PH9 but will have to wait till the Onkyo issue is resolved. I have the 886 and do not need the headache right out of the box with a new PDP.
It is good to see Panasonic is on it because if it had to come from Onkyo I would not be very confident;). I am very happy with the 886 but Onkyo is not very proactive with FW updates:rolleyes:.

Panasonic got back to me this morning and have requested my contact info so that they can have their repair center contact me directly. Will keep you guys posted on what happens.

I too heard from my rep, and she told me that the engineering team at Panasonic USA is now fully aware of the situation. In fact, according to her, my email containing the press release plus a description of my problem has been making its way around their television engineering department! So I do believe progress is being made, albeit a bit slower than I would have hoped. Nevertheless, I feel a resolution is just around the corner. :D
I now have a case number, just need to send them my serial number when I get home and they will schedule a service call. Not sure if they actually have the firmware update as of yet but at the very least they are aware of the issue and appear to be do something about it.
Sent them my serial number and received an email 5mins later (gotta love the Panasonic support), they are having their service center contact me to 'arrange to do the firmware update' (their words). Hope to have good news and a further update soon!

Good to hear. Keep us posted.
By the way, I have noticed something odd with my 905. When I set it to 1080i, the BD80 will still output 1080p to the V10. The V10 even says it's a 1080p signal. However, when I switch over to the Xbox 360, the V10 says it's a 1080i signal. It seems to me that the 905 only selectively down converts 1080p signals?
rotemben 09-04-09, 11:22 AM To install the mystery firmware - have no clue why they are sending him when engineering is still looking at it - but we'll see.
rotemben
rotemben 09-04-09, 11:45 AM Service Center guy just called saying there is no firmware yet, and engineering is working on it.
So it fits what everyone is saying here as well.
He Promised to call them Tuesday and get an update.

KidHorn 09-04-09, 01:37 PM I have a G15 and a 606 receiver and everything works OK for me. The Onkyo is set to HDMIPassthorugh as the signal processing is awful. It takes about 20 seconds for the TV and receiver to sync up which seems too long to me. PS3 and Motorola cable box both work fine.
Instead of blaming Panasonic I think we should blame the movie studios for implementing HDCP.
Have a service call booked for next week Tuesday, according to the repair center the guy is coming to update the firmware on my TV. We'll see what happens I guess.
d.shumate 09-04-09, 03:49 PM This coming sale after Thanksgiving, I will be purchasing either of the following:
Panasonic G10, V10, or Samsung 650. I will be hooking the tv of choice to my Onkyo TX-SR 806. After reading some issues here in AVS, it seems like some folks are having issues with their Pansasonic G10 or V10 being compatible with their Onkyo receiver. Again, I have a TX-SR 806. Will I have issues?
lateott 09-05-09, 03:32 AM I have the same snow issue with a Panasonic 50G10 and Onkyo 706. It is driving my wife nuts when all she wants to do is get Clifford the Big Red Dog to play for our daughter, and I'm a little embarassed that such an investment in high quality display, receiver, and BD player could result in such an incompatibility. Especially when hooked up with magical HDMI cables.
I have yet to register a service issue with Panasonic, but I will do so ASAP. Good to hear that the US is finally talking to the UK.
At least it is the highest quality snow I have ever seen on a TV...
I'm VERY happy to report..........no issues between my new 58V10 and my Onkyo 805.:)
I have the receiver on Pass-through and was able to switch between Blu-ray, the HDPVR and few rounds of Halo 3 without a problem lastnight.
Golfer18 09-05-09, 01:35 PM Just recevied my 65V10 and Onkyo PR-SC886 this last week. I have the same issue as everyone else.
Talked to Onkyo support(????) and they blamed this on the Panasonic.
Talked to Panasonic this morning and the rep wasn't aware of the issue:confused:.
After much holding and research she will pass the the issue to a higher level tech who may or may not call me back on Tuesday.
I can get video (always have audio) by shuting everything off and restarting then switching inputs back and forth multiple times. Maybe . It doesn't work every time! I am disappointed as this is my 1st surround system and the WAF is getting nasty!
amstel78 09-06-09, 07:46 PM Has anyone gotten any definitive updates from Panasonic USA regarding a firmware update yet?
T Morris 09-07-09, 08:32 PM I finally tried my DMP-BD30 with my Onkyo 805 and 58V10. Basically I get no picture when the same setup use to work fine with my 58PZ750U. The only other HW I've got in the mix is a Monoprice HDMI switcher to go between my HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players using the same input on the 805.
The HD-DVD reports that it's at 1080p and the picture is fine. If I switch to the Bly-Ray I sometimes get a glimpse of an image but the 805 pretty much shows "No Input" most of the time. The sad thing is that it behaves the same way regardless of the resolution I have the Blu-Ray set for. I've tried 720p, 1080i and 1080p - all with the same results.
I don't think it a Panasonic problem.
Most of us who own the V10 sets, have got them in the pasted few week's. I'm going to asume that they ALL have the same firmware as it was just released at the end of Aug. Our Onkyo's on the other hand, have all been bought at different times with a WIDE range of different firmware updates. I bought mine about a year and a half ago (i'll check) and i've never done a firmware update on my 805. And i also don't have any problems between it and the V10.
Let's get some guy's posting the firmware level of their Onkyo's, and see where we are after that. But i really think it's a Onkyo problem.

But i really think it's a Onkyo problem.Well, I updated my 805 when I bought it but that only does the MAIN and DSP sections. The HDMI has never had any updates released as far as I can tell so I'm still at 1.01 / 07706A.
Honestly, it very well could be an Onkyo problem but it may actually be easier for Panasonic to issue an update - plus the joint press release states it's a Panny problem.

No it doesn't. It means that Panasonic is doing everything they can to help. When Onkyo didn't even look into it. I talked to a few people at Panasonic Canada, and they said " who cares if it's a Onkyo or Panasonic problem......if we can help fix it.....we will." amstel78 09-08-09, 08:30 AM My 905's firmware is presently at 1.09.

By the way, I never had any issues with my Panasonic 50" 850U and the Onkyo 886, so why would this be an Onkyo issue, when the only change is the Panny V10?
Are you running a Blu-ray player with your Onkyo 805? My Oppo shows a white screen until I place a disc inside it and press play and then it handshakes fine. The Onkyo is set at passthrough.
By the way, I never had any issues with my Panasonic 50" 850U and the Onkyo 886, so why would this be an Onkyo issue, when the only change is the Panny V10?
Because, it seems to be a hit and miss issue. Some have it, some don't. But all the V10's....right now have the same firmware. The Onkyo's don't.
I bought a new Yamaha receiver, to go with my older Toshiba DLP a few year's ago, and i couldn't get them to play nice together at all. Took it back and bought the Onkyo 805. It worked fine. And it works fine with my V10. Set to pass-through for everything.
"Pass through" isn't the only setting the keeps Onkyo from "messing" with the signal. I have an Integra 9.8 (basically same as Onkyo PR-SC 885) and "OSD Setup" (i.e., controls whether or not operation details are displayed onscreen immediately after an AV controller function is used) must be set to "Off" to allow a 100% pass through.
I offer the above comment because that could possibly explain why some "pass throughs" work and others don't.
Good point. Mine has alway's been off. It would be funny, if it really was that simple.

I said the press release "states" when I should have said "infers". No matter as it could very well be a problem that rests on either of their corporate shoulders with the easier fix being done by Panasonic.

I'll give it a try when I get home to see if that makes a difference. At least I'd get decent sound back instead of having to hook directly up to the V10 to play Blu-Ray with the less than optimal audio.

My BD80 exhibits the same problem with the Onkyo 905 set to passthrough. If on the other hand, I set the 905 to 1080i, then there is no problem.

Pass-through may not be messing with the signal, but there's still something fishy going on with the HDMI "switcher." Why else then would I or others still get handshake issues when our Onkyo's are set to pass through?
EDIT: now that I think about it, not sure if OSD was set to on or off. I'll try adjusting those settings when I get home and report back...
Which is why i think it's an Onkyo problem.
amstel78 09-08-09, 12:11 PM Which is why i think it's an Onkyo problem.
At this point, it doesn't really matter whose problem it is as long as a solution is found. From the press release, it seems that Panasonic is accepting the responsibility for this issue so I'm not quite sure what you're trying to convey.
If it's not Panasonic's problem, then I commend them for stepping up to the plate to fix another manufacturer's issue.
For what it's worth, I never had an HDMI issue with any of my other sets and this Onkyo until now. When I thought it was an Onkyo problem, I sent the 905 at my expense to be repaired. The diagnosis came back negative, and this problem couldn't be replicated with other non-Panasonic sets at the repair facility. To me, it certainly appears to be a Panasonic problem... but who knows.

I don't know what is wrong. However, my point was, at least with last year's models, that it really isn't totally on "pass through" (i.e., signal not affected) unless you also set the OSD setup to "off". I know that for a fact because last year's Onkyo/Integra models with the Reon chip (don't know if it has been fixed) incorrectly changed the HD color space to the SD color space unless it was both set to "pass through" and OSD to "off".
EDIT: now that I think about it, not sure if OSD was set to on or off. I'll try adjusting those settings when I get home and report back...
If, for example, when you change volume it is reflected on the TV/display screen, the OSD is "on".

I believe I have OSD set to on, so I'll turn that off and set output back to pass-through and see if there's a change in the way handshaking occurs.
At present, I have the 905 set to output 1080i because it seems 1080i or lower work fine, and all devices switch without problems.
BTW, I'm curious - does the 905 downscale 1080p sources when 1080i is selected? My BD80 still shows as 1080p on the V10 even though 1080i is forced in the Onko, but my Xbox 360 will show 1080i, not 1080p.
amstel78 09-08-09, 12:24 PM If, for example, when you change volume it is reflected on the TV/display screen, the OSD is "on".
Yes, it shows volume on screen when using the Xbox 360 or Motorola cable box. It won't show when viewing material from the BD80. Strange.

If you have it set to 1080i, that means the receiver is processing the signal. You don't want it to do that. Anything set besides pass-through means the receiver is processing.

Yes, I realize that. I left it on 1080i because I don't experience any handshake issues when set to 1080i or lower. If set to pass-through, I still get static/snow screens.
Panasonic Canada just called me. They are sending a tech out tomorrow morning to update the firmware. I hope it doesn't create a problem when everything is working so good now!
Problem solved!
Just had two guys here to update my TV (one from Panasonic Canada, the other from their authorized service center) and they successfully updated the firmware on my TV to v1.25 from v1.24. HDMI handshake issue at 1080p via my Onkyo 875 is gone! Super nice guys and they were in and out in 15mins. Glad they were able to sort it out so quick/easy, thumbs up again to Panasonic's service.
dstedman 09-08-09, 04:42 PM Send them down to Minnesota - I'll be waiting!

Glad to hear Vise! I'm still arguing with Panasonic USA regarding my case. Here's an excerpt from an email they sent me earlier today:
Thank you for providing this additional information. It is greatly appreciated.
We have forwarded the information you provided to our product and design engineers for confirmation.
We are well aware of the Press Release you have referenced. The issue is the Onkyo AV receiver you own was not one of the models listed as having a compatibility issue.
If confirmed that it is, we will provide you with the firmware update.
We'll inform you of any updated information we receive.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this matter may have caused.
Thank you for choosing Panasonic.
<sigh> Why can't they just send me the firmware like everyone else?
dstedman 09-08-09, 06:06 PM I just forwarded this thread to them via my existing ticket number - my receiver is the 876, so they won't be able to make the "that model isn't problematic" argument with me... :)
Funny cause I had a chat with the guy from Panasonic when he was here and mentioned the issue that you guys down there are having in getting Panasonic USA to acknowledge/address this problem. Seemed like it was not a surprise to him and he said that in Canada they are alot more aggressive in terms of resolving problems such as this. Sounded like he was patting himself on the back a bit but it is true nonetheless, I went from an email to them on Thursday to a firmware update today so that is a pretty fast turnaround.
Either way hopefully they end up doing the right thing and you guys get sorted out, I'm sure it will be sooner rather than later given that the firmware is available and it fixes the problem.
When the guy comes tomorrow, i'll ask him(nicely) if i could make a copy. I guess the worst he could say is no, right?:p
amstel78 09-08-09, 11:05 PM Well, regarding the pass-through and OSD; I turned off the on-screen display and set the 905 to pass-through all signals. Surprise surprise! HDMI switching works fine now with no handshake issues. Very interesting.
Anyway, this is a temporary work-around. I really do hope Panasonic USA releases a firmware fix soon.
dstedman 09-09-09, 01:41 AM Yeah - no reason to pay big bucks for a good upconverting receiver just to pass it thru. :( I'm hoping a fix comes soon. In the mean time I am in pass-thru as well.

I did this as well w/ my 705 when I notice how long it took for PS3's pic to come through. However it still sometimes takes 10-20secs to get a pic. Does yours come on right away?
i'm living in Belgium and have a Pan TX-P42V10E and a brand new Onky TX-SR707 ; i got the Hdmi issue with Blu-ray (1080p) and HD Cable set-up box (1080i) - keeps always sync on hdmi - the DVD recorder at 1080i had no problem at all.
After updating the FW on the Pana from 2003 tot 2011 everything went well, the cable box it still takes about a 10-20 sec to sync for connection, converting from 1080i to 1080p, the blu-ray is already at 1080p the sync is imediately now.
I did the update on the Pana through network connection;
Please update your TV?s software via the following menus:
- SETUP menu
- SYSTEM menu
- NETWORK SETUP menu
- SYSTEM UPDATE menu
The software should update using the Freesat functionality.

I get video usually within 2-5 seconds. Not too long.
Yes, it shows volume on screen when using the Xbox 360 or Motorola cable box. It won't show when viewing material from the BD80. Strange.
If the BD80 is outputting 1080p/24, that could be the reason. I "believe" that the Onkyo's video processing can't touch a 1080p/24 signal. That includes inserting OSD data into the video output or anything else that would trigger the handshake issues.
Had the tech come to the house this morning. I've been upgraded to firmware version 1.25
I asked if i could make a copy. He wouldn't let me.

I never had any before the update. This was a "just in case" update for me.
T Morris 09-09-09, 01:27 PM I contacted the Concierge service today and scheduled a FW update for my 58V10. What sort of Onkyo do you have?
I found that by using pass-through and turning off the OSD at least allows me to use all my components without handshake issues. However, that's still a temporary solution, and there are some analog input devices that I'd prefer the Onkyo to upscale.
I have a Belgian Panasonic P50V10, Panasonic came along to upgrade the firmware to 2.0013 but the problem is still there with my Onkyo SR606. Gonna sell the Onkyo and ordered a Marantz SR7002 instead.

I've also tried turning off the OSD update, to no avail. I've set the resolution of my DMP-BD30 to everything from 480i to 1080i with the same results - an occasional flash of a picture then back to blank screen. Changing the display resolution on the player was interesting as I had to do it blind via keystroke counts since there is no picture
The puzzling thing seems to be that my HD-DVD player works just fine using the same data path as both players run through a Monoprice HDMI switcher.
amstel78 09-09-09, 08:32 PM How come the Canadians are getting their flash updates now, and we in the USA are still waiting?
I swear... this must be the Panasonic gods getting back at me for buying a V10 at a ridiculous price.
Just out of curiosity.....when was your's built? Mine was July/09
T Morris 09-09-09, 09:19 PM Just out of curiosity.....when was your's built? Mine was July/09My 58V10 was built in July '09 as well.
Ok...we both have the same t.v, with the same build date and firmware. And we both have the same Onkyo Receiver TX-SR805......what is the firmware? I'm willing to bet it's different than mine?
To check, turn the receiver on and push and hold the display button on the front panel. While holding it down press the power button and your firmware will show on the display.
Onkyo knew they had a problem with "handshake" issues and released the 1.08 firmware some time ago to "fix" most of the HDMI issues that they were plagued with.
Mine is 1.08 and was purchased Sept/08

cecoleman 09-10-09, 10:14 AM I have the Onkyo HT-RC160 receiver and the one issue I have with setup (Pan. G15 Plasma & Sony Blu Ray Player) is that when I switch inputs from blu-ray to another source, and then go back to Blu Ray the DVD will play in what looks like fast forward with no sound. I have to shut off the Blu Ray player and restart it to fix it. We all know what a pain that is based on load times.
I have the Onkyo HT-R960 receiver (part of the HT-S9100THX HTiB system) and a TC-P54G10. I am having difficulty as well running components thru the receiver. I get sound but the screen is green. I'm also having issues at times with my Motorola HDR from Charter. All of the connections are via HDMI cable.
I contacted both Onkyo and Panasonic USA Customer Service. I opened a case with Panasonic yesterday requesting the updated firmware.
I just received an interesting e-mail from Onkyo Customer Service. They directed me to contact Panasonic and gave me a specific name and number to call for further assistance. As soon as I hear back, I will post an update.
MossBoss 09-10-09, 11:11 AM Has there been any issues with the S1 series?
I have an Onkyo 605 and was going to buy a Panny 65S1 this weekend.
Thanks for any info
dstedman 09-10-09, 12:08 PM After replying to my original ticket with a link to this thread, I got this response from Panasonic (I guess they have a fix available after all?):
Dear MR STEDMAN
Thank you for your inquiry.
Please call 1-800-211-7262 to setup service for the TV.
Thank you for contacting Panasonic.
Thank You,
Panasonic Consumer Support
Panasonic is sending a technician out to update the firmware on my G10. Unfortunately, it looks like the earliest they will be able to come to my house is next Thursday.
Very curious to see how you guys fare with the update. My V10 was updated, but problem remains. Even with expensive hdmi cables.
serialmike 09-10-09, 05:17 PM The g10 has firmware updates thru viewcast. The current firmware update was for the handshake issue.
The update is 1.09 something like that. I have had my set for like a month. I read then that was what the update was for on a website. It was fixed a while ago at least thats what I read.
A quick search I found this from UK. http://www.aventhusiast.co.uk/panasonic-and-onkyo-advisory-on-hdmi-handshake-issues/838.htm
Here's what Onkyo had to say about my Motorola DVR:
It appears that your Cable/Satellite box is not HDCP compatible with our receiver. The A/V receiver supports HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) a copy-protection system for digital video signals. Any device connected to the A/V receiver for video must also support HDCP, so only HDCP-compatible components can display the picture. In addition, video signals from a PC are not supported and there is no guarantee that the audio will work as well. Your DVD Player must also support HDCP in order to get the video from the player through to the receiver so the receiver can output the signal to your TV if you want to use HDMI cables. Motorola and Scientific Atlanta cable/satellite boxes are having issues with not only with our receivers but other manufactures running HDMI through the receivers. These Cable box/Satellite manufactures are aware of the issue and are supposed to be coming out with a firmware fix or replacing the boxes for the customers that are being hooked up with the HDMI connections. If the Cable/Satellite receiver being used is having problems passing HDMI video signal through an A/V receiver or is freezing up, contact the manufacturer of your box or your Cable/Satellite provider to see if an update is available.

Unlike Panasonic, it seems Onkyo just keeps passing the blame. It could be true but Onkyo's Customer Service is not in the same class as Panasonic. A service representative even called me back to make sure I was happy with the service so far and asked me to call him back after my firmware is updated. Now that's customer service.

geez, dont waste money on cables. go to monoprice and get great prices on good solid well built cables.

Are you in the US or Canada? It seems to me that the Canadians are getting their firmware sent out before us here in the States. I can't believe I'm still waiting after all this time...
I'm in the U.S. so it appears they are now resolving the issue here as well.
shedberg 09-11-09, 10:11 AM Hi all, got my 54 Panny today and am happy that I have no Handshake issues with my 706. Yeah!!!!
dstedman 09-11-09, 03:02 PM FYI - when you call to schedule your service, they will need the serial number from your panel.
amstel78 09-11-09, 07:25 PM Just got an email from Panasonic USA:
We have received confirmation from our engineers in Japan that the model of Onkyo receiver you have has now been added to the list of Onkyo/Integra receivers.
We are going to schedule a service call with either a Panasonic Field Service Representative or an Authorized Panasonic Independent Service Center to run a service call to install the firmware update.
Please confirm your physical address and a telephone number where you may be reached during the day.
We anticipate:
A servicer will be assigned to run the service call.
They will acquire the firmware update.
They will contact you to schedule the service call at a time of your convenience.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this matter may have caused.
Thank you for choosing Panasonic.

Can those of you receiving updates please post the TV firmware version number you had before and after the service call?

Will do. FYI, my 50V10 is FW version 1.190 at the moment.
Mine was at 1.24 originally and was updated to 1.25 last week.
dstedman 09-14-09, 02:19 PM Did you all have service people out? Or is there any chance it is available on Viera for download?
T Morris 09-14-09, 02:39 PM Did you all have service people out? Or is there any chance it is available on Viera for download? At this time it's via a Panasonic service call only.
Golfer18 09-15-09, 03:33 PM Panasonic rep was out yesterday afternoon. Firmware 1.25 installed in about 5 minutes. All HDMI handshake issues are resolved between 65V10 and Onkyo PRSC886. Kudos to Panasonic for stepping up to resolve this little problem. Great support. Thanks to this thread for all the great info!
avalonwpo 09-15-09, 08:25 PM Hi all. Have a 58v10 handshake issue with the Integra DTR 9.9 receiver and a Panny BD55. Just called Panasonic and spoke to a great guy about my problem, and Joe said he would set me up a FW fix this Friday. He knew what was wrong and took excellent care of me. Have her broke in and love this v10. Thanks to you all for helping me with problems and purchases.
Did you all have service people out? Or is there any chance it is available on Viera for download?it should get pushed out at some point via their internet service, but no idea what their release process is. And how much testing they do before they do a general release for everyone?
If you need it right away, better to call them and get a service call scheduled.
amstel78 09-16-09, 05:29 PM Did you all have service people out? Or is there any chance it is available on Viera for download?
I finally got my appointment for next Wednesday. The Panasonic field rep will be doing the firmware installation.
rotemben 09-17-09, 03:21 PM Firmware updated by the service guy, everything works.
Good Job Pana.

pvrao2004 09-17-09, 08:32 PM Just recevied my 65V10 and Onkyo PR-SC886 this last week.
Ditto here, I just got the 65V10 and hooked it up to the 886 and just get the cycling snowy screen. I have a good mind to dispute my credit card charge until the issue is resolved.

pvrao2004 - If you want to dispute your CC charge do it with Onkyo not Panasonic - they stepped up immediately and fixed the problem. It only took a couple of phone calls to co-ordinate the service call and the problem was fixed. The 65V10 and 886 now work together beautifully! I am now a very happy camper and very pleased with my purchase decisions.
T Morris 09-18-09, 08:16 PM I'm scheduled to get the FW update and would like to know if anyone knows if it impacts the SM settings related to calibration? That is, has anybody had an ISF calibration done and then had the FW update... did it cause any issues with your calibration? I wouldn't expect so but sometimes upgrades have strange side effects.
dstedman 09-23-09, 02:27 PM Got my firmware update delivered via a service guy this morning & all seems to be working well now. Hopefully I'll notice a difference using the 876's scaler!
rotemben 09-23-09, 03:34 PM Hey,
after the firmware update (happened before too) i notice when the TV is showing SD channels, sometimes it will lose the sync go blue/blackscreen for a few seconds and resync.
never happens with HD channel.
thoughts?
Thanks!

dstedman 09-24-09, 12:18 PM Haven't noticed that problem, though haven't had much time to watch TV with the new firmware yet.
grolla1 09-24-09, 12:20 PM Had a service tech out to update the firmware yesterday, and the HDMI white snow handshake issue seems to be solved...great success!
GioGambino 09-24-09, 02:26 PM Hey guys, I have a 54S1 with an Onkyo I believe 706 or 606, I will have to check when I get home. I am not having the snow issue or whatever you guys are having, but I am having HDMI problems myself. I thought maybe it was my HDMI cables but now I doubt it since I only upgraded my TV and nothing else. Never had issues before.
Basically I use a PS3 for my Blu-Ray movies. Through my Onkyo, the video and audio was playing, but when I would fast forward my screen would go blank for a few seconds until the video reconnected with my Onkyo (I'm assuming). I also would get a line a few inches wide that would have garbled colors on it when I would fast forward.
When I connected my PS3 directly to my 54S1, the blank screen after fast forwarding went away along with the garbled line of color. So this has to do with handshake issues of my Onkyo and 54S1.
What can I do?

What can I do?Don't discount the cables as the source of the problem. One thing that was pointed out when I moved from my 750U to the V10 and ran into problems was that I also went from HDMI 1.2 to HDMI 1.3. I've got new 24AWG cables from Monoprice that should show up tomorrow to confirm or deny the theory.
Like you, my prior setup worked just fine. Installed the V10 and ran into problems which I figured were due the the Onkyo handshake problem. After the upgrade I still had issues and tracked it down to the HDMI switch I'm using. Further investigation revealed that one of the cables in the path wasn't 24AWG and Monoprice has the disclaimer that cables need to be at least 24AWG to insure proper performance. We'll see.

Very interesting, I seem to be in the same exact situation. I also have a HDMI switch from Monoprice, so who knows if that is even causing problems?
My HDMI cables aren't very old, probably less than a year. They are 24AWG but I'm not sure which HDMI version. Not sure if they are 1.3A or not.
Either way, PLEASE keep me updated if the new cables solve your problem. Thanks!

Either way, PLEASE keep me updated if the new cables solve your problem. Thanks!I received my new 24AWG cables from Monoprice today and installed them. Interestingly I'm getting mixed results. When I first switched to my BR player it displayed snow but when it transitioned to the next segment and had to resynch the picture was clear. Swapping back and forth between my HD-DVD and BR I ran into the snow a 2nd time but it wasn't something I could reproduce at will. Based on this I would guess that the snow is still an issue with the Panny and HDMI even with the fix but once it locks up to a good picture it should stay there.
Whether or not this will resolve your particular issue I don't know. But, a new set of cables from Monoprice is a cheap enough experiment and they're not likely to go to waste.
I never thought about checking cables.
I use tributaries cables and don't have a problem.

hmhoshino 09-25-09, 02:15 PM Do I need to switch to each device so my 58v10 can learn each location of each device. Initially it took a long time to learn each device ie... my Dish 722, PS3, Sony 550,
Xbox 360, and Wii the delay was quite as long. It does take time but is that normal.
Henry
Sounds like you need the firmware update Henry.
hmhoshino 09-25-09, 04:32 PM Vise; I called Panasonic support and I had to resett the tv but it still take along to finally call up each device. I just emailed Onkyo and awaiting a reply.

I have an Onkyo 605 and was going to buy a Panny 65S1 this weekend.
Thanks for any info
Or similarly, any issues with the S14 series?
I also have an Onkyo 605.
I have been looking into all of the new Panasonics....S14, S1, G10, V10.
Weird how the higher models have this issue.
Do we know if the entry level S14 and S1 series have issues?
Something like this severely effects my purchasing decision.
hmhoshino 09-25-09, 06:54 PM I called Panasonic and they are going to give me a call Monday with arrangements to get a Panasonic Field Rep to install the firmware. They have to find a local field rep. So I have to wait.

amstel78 09-25-09, 08:30 PM Wanted to update anyone that was following my original problem. Panasonic finally sent their rep out to me this past Wednesday. The firmware was installed, and the process took less than 10 minutes. All my HDMI switching/handshake issues have now been solved. So, for anyone still having handshake issues with their Panny/Onkyo combo, I highly recommend contacting Panasonic for this fix.

From this thread it seems that the Onkyo's that are having issues are the ones with their own video scaling capabilities - which the 605 lacks.
Maybe that is why it doesn't have the same issues as the others with the Panny displays.
hmhoshino 09-26-09, 12:23 PM Amstel78;

I am here in Sunnyvale California and they to find a rep to send out.

Thank you very much for the update. I actually have the 604, I don't know why I thought I had one of the higher models. I am starting to think I am not having issues with my AVR but rather my HDMI switcher. I took the PS3 out of the switcher and went straight into my AVR and that seems to have cured the issues.
I will keep you updated if my problem is a mixture of switcher and/or cables.

I will keep you updated if my problem is a mixture of switcher and/or cables.Yup. I'm fighting an issue with a Monoprice HDX-401E switcher as well. Strange thing is that it's actually worse if I don't route the output through my AVR.
What I found is that having a 24p movie play back in 24p is fine but turning off the 24p capability of the player (using 3:2 pulldown) and I get the snow/sparkles. Same situation when playing back a standard DVD. I've got quality 24AWG cables throughout so the only other thing is the switcher. I'm guessing it must somehow be a data rate issue so I'll be contacting Monoprice on Monday.
Also odd is that my HD-DVD player seems to work OK through the switcher. It's just the Blu-Ray, when routed through the switcher, that has an issue and only on 3:2 content.

I'll let everyone know if it works.I saw in the other thread that you have the 65V10, same as me; I got mine just a week and a half ago. I hooked up a new Onkyo 607 this weekend, and I haven't really seen any problems. Once, when I switched to the only component input I have (Wii), I saw a very thin vertical line of white & black noise on the right edge of the screen for a few seconds (black everywhere else), then the picture showed up fine -- but I was not able to replicate that. All the other HDMI inputs work as expected (switching does take a few seconds while I would prefer instantaneous...but I think that's normal HDMI behavior).
When I try to update the 65V10 firmware via the menu, it shows that I have 1.200. I'm curious, is that what yours shows? Also what model is your receiver?
If you wouldn't mind telling us the firmware version after your service visit, that would be great as well.

It sounds like to check the firmware version I have to look at Setup -> About on the TV line, and take A.BCD from the displayed "ZAYB-XCWD". And I guess W.XYZ should match my software version?
IM2humble 09-29-09, 11:27 AM I just bought the 50v10 along with a 707 - a most unfortunate choice, I guess. Well, I do have the switching issue, but not all the time. Mostly, it seems to happen when switching back to my Samsung BD player after I have already been viewing it. I have never had it happen when turning everything on for the first time, and it doesn't always happen.
I guess I had better call Panasonic to see about getting the F/W update. Any key words or terminology I should use to help things go smoothly?
ETA: Wrong model number.
cdm57_2001 09-29-09, 06:59 PM I just got the firmware fix today. I haven't put it through stringent testing, but it appears to work. When I called Panasonic it took me some time to get the tech to find the service note. I'm not sure what key words clued her in, but I described the problem using many of the terms from this chain of posts. I'm pretty sure if you describe it as a hansdshake issue bewteen the Onkyo reciever and the Panasonic G10, it'll get you there.
Once she found the note, Panasonic was more than willing to help and arranged for the service call immediately. I'm so happy its finally fixed. I was starting to doubt my ability to set up the system!

I had my rep come by yesterday and everything works now. The ps3, tivo, onkyo, and tv (65v10) all play nicely with each other.
I was told that I was probably the last person that would be getting a service call for this. Apparently they only send out the reps in the beginning to make sure that the fix (which only took about 5 minutes) works. In the future he said that they would just be mailing an SD card with the update out to people.
bobwalton 09-30-09, 01:04 PM I have the issues too. I have a new Onkyo 876 (firmware 1.05) and a new Panny TC-P54V10 (August 2009 build). I just got off the phone with Panasonic and the woman there said it would be posted on their firmware website by October 9.
http://www.pasctraining.panasonic.com/firmware/
I was going crazy trying to change HDMI cables, settings, etc... I get snow even when I try to change a resolution setting on the receiver's menu. For example, I would try to enable Block NR and when I exited the setup menu, SNOW!! When trying to watch a bluray move, I would power cycle to get PS3 to sync, watch the bluray movie, then when I stop the bluray, handshake issue back to the PS3 homescreen! I was just about the return my 876 when I decided to call Onkyo then Panasonic.
Hopefully I can still get a guy out to update the firmware so I don't have to wait as I am going crazy!:confused::(
IM2humble 09-30-09, 01:28 PM That sounds great! Being able to upgrade the firmware myself would be wonderful.
I absolutely love my new display. Getting it to play well with others will be the final setup issue for me. I was re-doing the family room, so everything got upgraded (BD, receiver, speakers, TV, DTV even upgraded my HD receiver to a new 1080p black unit that matches all the other components). This was my first all HDMI setup, so I wasn't sure what problems I would have. Turns out, since everything was new, there was only this one, intermittent issue.
Oh yeah, the new furniture will here next Tuesday. I've been experiencing my fantastic new A/V setup from the comfort of a folding lawn chair.
Does this qualify as this issue?
TV: P50G10
Receiver: Onkyo ??? (the receiver from the HT-S9100 HTiB)
PS3 > HDMI > Receiver
Xbox 360 > Component > Receiver
Wii > Component > Receiver
Cable Box > HDMI > Receiver
Receiver > HDMI > TV
I don't ever see snow/fuzz when changing channels or between inputs, but it usually takes 10-15 seconds to move from a SD channel to HD channel on the cable box (or vice-versa). It always takes 5-10 seconds to move from the cable input to the Xbox 360/PS3/Wii inputs too.
Like I said, I never have snow or anything, but a black screen while I wait for these to do their things. Is this delay (or what seems like a delay) the same issue? Should I call or wait for the firmware update?
bobwalton 09-30-09, 06:52 PM As an update for everyone, if you do the concierge live chat and tell them about the handshaking problem and tell them you want to schedule someone to fix it, they will offer to send you an SD card in the mail with an update on it. The guy told me it would arrive in a couple of days. I might be able to extract the files from the SD card and post them once I get it if that would be helpful to anyone.
Looks like they will be sending me an SD card as well...
Well, when I go home to grab the serial # of my TV. I need to update their case number with it. Couldn't get the serial while I was at work.
EDIT: Ran home and grabbed the serial #. The rep said:
"John: from what I see it becomes available for download on the 9th so it should go go out somwhere between now and then"
I hope it gets here before they make it available for download! Otherwise, it's just a waste to receive the SD card.
DJCorpse 10-01-09, 11:41 AM I accepted delivery of my 58V10 yesterday and I have an Onkyo 705. I do not appear to have any handshake issues when cycling through the inputs for my DVR, HD DVD player and PS3 but I have only played around for a limited amount of time thus far.
Would you guys recommend asking for the firmware update regardless or should I just let it go since everything seems to be fine. Thanks in advance!

If you are not having a problem, I would not bother expediting the firmware update. It's just a waste of your time becuase you will be able to do it probably through VCAST on the 9th.
hmhoshino 10-01-09, 04:06 PM Panasonic Rep came out today and he downloaded the firmware update. Now the handshake issues are no more. My Onkyo TX-NR905 is now working perfectly with all my devices such as my Dish 722 receiver, Sony BDP-550, PS3, Xbox 360, and my Wii.

It would be wonderful if somebody who is sent a sd card could post the file online for those of us who never have the time to telephone Panasonic. Thanks to the first AVSer who does so!:D

I'll post it when I get it.
microhof 10-02-09, 01:01 PM I had my rep come by yesterday and everything works now. The ps3, tivo, onkyo, and tv (65v10) all play nicely with each other.Crackmonkey, could you post what you see in your Setup -> About screen next to "TV"?
I see all those numbers, but I dont have a clue of what they mean.
Finally got around to checking mine. Mine says 0100-2010. Following the pattern I posted above, which I believe to be correct, that means:
FIRMWARE = 1.000
SOFTWARE = 1.200
I have seen some people with this handshake problem say that their updated FIRMWARE version was 1.250. However, their TVs were a different size than mine and maybe the different sizes have different firmware & are at different revision numbers from one another?
Sadly, when I set up my new P58V10 last night, I found out I have the HDMI handshake issue. I get video for about 30 seconds (and it's a beautiful thing!) and then the ugly green screen of death rears its ugly head. Audio is fine though.
Receiver is an Onkyo TX-SR706. All cables are new 22 gauge Monoprice 1.3 cables.
All worked fine with the plasma set I replaced (Hitachi 55").
I guess you all know how frustrating it is getting a new set and not being able to watch it :-(.
Anyway, thanks to this excellent thread, I knew to call Panasonic support. I was the first person with this problem that this particular phone tech had received. Nonetheless, he determined the course of action was to mail me an SD card with the new firmware.
Guess I'll have to wait a few more days before I can enjoy my new toy.

Just applied the update (from the SD card they sent me). No more black screen lag! (My SM settings remained too.)
Uploading the files and the documents now...give me a few minutes.

(That's the ONLY file that was on the SD card!)What size is your television? I would not be surprised if there were different versions of the firmware for different sizes, though it looks like historically that hasn't been the case w/Panasonic.
I will see tonight whether I can find an automatic update (they appear to have claimed it would be available starting today, though it's not anywhere on their website yet) -- but I am not entirely sure how to do that; do I just go into VIERA cast and it would automatically do it? Would I see on-screen indicators?
samendolaro 10-09-09, 12:13 PM According to that document it is for all Model sizes which would be what the XX referers to. I believe it is only for the V10 though...

Mine is the P50G10. (So, 50".) Whey they do start sending it, it should prompt when you enter VieraCast. Otherwise, there's a "Software Update" in the settings (under Network Settings).
According to that document it is for all Model sizes which would be what the XX referers to. I believe it is only for the V10 though...
Yes, XX means for multiple sizes. Not just for the V10's though, as mine is a G10. Page 2 that I posted has all the models at the top of it.
Sorry if I missed it, but what is the version number of this firmware?
1.250. It was 1.190 before the update.
samendolaro 10-09-09, 02:38 PM I believe that is a "Generic" document which covers all of their Models meaning that the firmware is updated the same across all models.
Is the file you provided the actual firmware or does the firmware download via the internet ?
A bit confusing....
sodaboy581 10-09-09, 02:39 PM I'd like to get this firmware, but the RapidShare link is toast now.

microhof 10-09-09, 02:57 PM Otherwise, there's a "Software Update" in the settings (under Network Settings).Everything I've read suggests that software (tuner software) and firmware are updated separately via different methods, so I don't think "software update" will update anything other than tuner software. Unless you are positive; my assumptions could be incorrect as I pieced them together from various sources. Anyway, I'll see what happens at home tonight...

Will this 1.25 firmware update just fix the Onkyo handshake issue or will it also fix the THX color decoding issue too at the same time?
microhof 10-09-09, 04:17 PM Will this 1.25 firmware update just fix the Onkyo handshake issue or will it also fix the THX color decoding issue too at the same time?
I would be surprised if the THX changes are in this version. Last I heard those had only been released in Europe and I would suspect they'd want to do more testing before wide release over here. When I attempt the update later tonight, I will try to see if I notice any change in THX mode (though it might be too hard for me to tell, with just my eyes).
Captain Spaulding 10-09-09, 05:11 PM I have a TC-P58S1 arriving on Monday. I also have an Onkyo receiver. I don't see my model number as one listed in the online instructions, so am I correct in thinking that the 58S1 doesn't have the problem?
GioGambino 10-09-09, 05:52 PM Yes, I have a 54S1 and an Onkyo receiver. Will this update not work on the 54S1?
I believe that is a "Generic" document which covers all of their Models meaning that the firmware is updated the same across all models.
Is the file you provided the actual firmware or does the firmware download via the internet ?

The file is the only thing that goes on the card. It should be the firmware. They sent me a SD card with that file being the only thing on it. Yes, I did have my TV connected via the Ethernet cable, but I'm sure that didn't make a difference. Everything you need should be that file.
Everything I've read suggests that software (tuner software) and firmware are updated separately via different methods, so I don't think "software update" will update anything other than tuner software. Okay, I guess I'm not positive about that, but I *think* they would be the same. When I go to the Software Update area, it shows this on my TV:
Current version: 1.250
Available version: 1.190
(And then it says I have the most current available update...I cannot downgrade to the 1.190...even though I wouldn't want to anyway!)
Right before I applied their SD update, I checked that screen. and both current and available were 1.190. So, it did reflect some sort of change from the SD card.
This shows that I've applied an update more current than the one they have up for download (via the Ethernet port). I cannot say for sure, but I truly think the Software Update spot would get the handshake issue solved, if/when Panasonic provides the update via the VieraCast. I can't be 100% sure though.
And yes, the photobucket links are the instructions they sent me. You'll even see some spelling errors on their part! :p
To the other poster: No, this doesn't "fix" THX. It's simply for Panny/Onkyo handshaking issues. My link is maxed, but a working link was posted shortly after my original post.
sodaboy581 10-09-09, 06:46 PM The second upload that gostan posted is still working for me...
Oops! Don't know how I missed it!
Thanks!
Yes, I have a 54S1 and an Onkyo receiver. Will this update not work on the 54S1? I haven't read anything that indicates that the S1 plasmas are affected by this issue.
The UK press release in the main post only states that the G10 and V10 plasma models were affected.
On the documentation posted by RIG85 they added some LCD models plus the G15 plasma.
bobwalton 10-09-09, 07:56 PM Sorry if I missed it, but what is the version number of this firmware?
version is 1.25 I think. Seemed to work on my 54" V10. I am still waiting for my SD card to arrive from Panasonic. Don't need it now though.

Weird. Now that I'm home, and can see the instructions, I went ahead and did this update. Indeed the instructions say this updates the TUNER FIRMWARE (seen on the TV as "software version" and updated normally via "software update"), and indeed that is what happened. My EPROM firmware remained at 1.000, and the tuner went to 1.250.
If this is truly the fix for the Onkyo handshaking issue, then I am surprised that is in the tuner software! I guess I was wrong earlier when I told Han_Solo and others otherwise. Unfortunately I rarely saw handshaking issues before w/my Onkyo, and when I did see funky behavior I wasn't sure if it was the same problem you guys all had, so I may not know for awhile (if ever) whether anything was improved for me. At any rate, thanks for the instructions and file!
dukelover79 10-11-09, 11:46 AM After reading through this thread, I realized I have the same problem as many of you with my 50V10 and my Onkyo 876. So, I emailed Panasonic with the link to the European press release. A few days later I received a case numbr via email and was told to call Panasonic. I called and the guy just asked me what was wrong, I told him, he took down my info and all of the info about my devices. He then told me they would mail me out a firmware update and I should expect it in 2-3 days. It was a very short conversation.
DJCorpse 10-11-09, 11:51 AM I am getting the firmware update via a SD card in the mail as well. I initially thought everything was ok with my 705 and 58V10, but after a week I decided to call Panasonic. I'm not having a major issue but it seems like it takes a little too long for the video to appear (maybe 10-15 seconds) when switching between inputs on my receiver.
Another SD card (same instructions) showed up at my apartment yesterday. They messed up and sent two.
tulsabrown 10-11-09, 05:25 PM My 58v10 was delivered today and while the firmware is 1.24 I am not experiencing this issue with Onkyo receiver. I have the older 605 model and everything is acting normally.

I thought mine was acting normally, but since installing the update in this thread (software 1.250) it seems that input switching is noticeably faster (e.g. something that may have taken 5 seconds before, takes 2 seconds). But, I have the Onkyo 607.
reson8er 10-12-09, 09:37 AM Rig85, Thank you for sharing this with us, I have an Onkyo 805 and was experiencing the handshake issues intermittently on my 54v10(production date Aug 09). This update cleared it all up :)
Again, thanks, your effort is much appreciated.
fearless33 10-12-09, 04:56 PM This was excellent information as I was very concerned with the behavior of a new Onkyo 706 and a 58V10. In reading this thread, it was comforting to see that Firmware was the issue and that a new rev. would clear things up. I completed the update earlier today and can confirm that my handshake issue is GONE.
New Zealander 10-14-09, 03:09 AM I thought I was going mad, until I found this thread.
I've been having very similar issues with my 42G10 and Onkyo 906. For the first 2 weeks all was well. Then slowly the problem would creep in. At first it would be 30mins before it happened, but that quickly became 10mins. Now once it starts, I pretty much can't get rid of it. Interestingly connecting to the HDMI 2 on the TV doesn't seem to have the problem.
I've been going out of my head trying to work out where the issue comes from. I was pretty much down to the HDMI connection between the TV and the AVR. AVR has been in the shop last week getting checked out and updated with most recent software, so we know it's not the AVR. Therefore it's either the cable, the TV or a handshake issue.
Panasonic here in NZ aren't really that interested in my problem, and struggle to believe that it is a Panasonic issue. Naturally they blame Onkyo. I don't care who's at fault - I just want a fix, and it would seem that one exists for the Panasonic TV.
I'm interested to know if any other New Zealanders are having this issue. We will only get traction if we all call Panasonic about this.
Would be interested in any other Kiwi's posting here who have, or are, experiencing this issue.
Cheers

01000-80211It may be related to the HDMI cables you are using. What is the size of the wire used (e.g. 24AWG)?
Something I found in my investigations with a Monoprice HDMI switcher is that everything worked fine @ 24p but when playing back @ 60Hz I got sparkles and handshake issues. Swapping cables helped but didn't resolve the issue in my case but yours sounds like it may be related to the size/quality of the HDMI cable.

I have a 42G10 and an Onkyo SC-886 with the same problems. Have they made this firmware available to download yet? I have attempted to grab it from the rapidshare link a few posts back but it keeps telling me there are no slots available for free users, buy a premium account or try again later.
I went into the VieraCast menu today and it mentioned a new version of software. My G15 updated to version 1.28.
I would imagine it contains the onkyo fix as this is a higher version number than the one being mentioned earlier in this topic.

Got the rapidshare link to work and updated my G10 firmware to 1.25. All issues have been SOLVED.
Has any one got confirmation that the Onkyo handshaking issues are still resolved in 1.28? I did the 1.25 update manually and all is working perfectly. I am leery about updating to 1.28 when I dont know what the changes are.
Anyone know what the change set is??

I'm not having any issues with the new firmware. I'm guessing they kept (or incorporated) the handshake solving piece into this firmware.
donnymac51 11-04-09, 03:50 PM 1.28 only fixes issues in vieracast
Sorry to duplicate this post in other threads. I received this response from Panasonic today.
Thank you for your inquiry.
Firmware 1.20 enhances the THX mode and firmware 1.25 addresses the Onkyo
HDMI compatibility. Where did you hear about firmware 1.28? Is it on your
TV? Are you connected to Viera Cast?
Thank you for contacting Panasonic.
Thank You,

Why are the updates not cumulative and include BOTH HDMI handshake fix AND THX color decoding fix???
Has someone with this issue who is currently on firmware version 1.19 updated to 1.28 via VieraCast to see if this resolved the issue?
it sounds like there's some conflicting information on how the update process works.
I have not updated to 1.28. I did apply the 1.25 update and it fixed all my HDMI handshake problems.

yeah i'm looking for someone who hasn't updated with 1.25 at all. Basically skipping from 1.19 to 1.28 via Vieracast to see if it fixes the Onkyo issue.
It would be a good way to test how the Panasonic update process works as we've received a few different conflicting answers.
Hi all...
I was going nuts until I found this thread - have a 54" V10 & Onkyo 876
I had to call Panny 3 times, first time they never sent the SD cards, 2nd time they sent the wrong thing (2 SD cards?!) and finally the SD card with the fix.
Works great so far....

Yes I would like to know the answer on this as well. I currently have a 54G10 and am about to pull the trigger on an Onkyo 707. Can we now get all the needed HDMI fixes via their normal internet firmware upgrade (through the TV itself)? I am about to update my TV to 1.28 from 1.19. Thanks for any info!

Thanks for any info!based on information in another topic, 1.28 doesn't contain the hdmi handshake fix as it seems Panasonic releases their updates as patches essentially.
1.28 only contained VieraCast related fixes.
If you have an affected set, you should be contacting Panasonic to request that they mail out the 1.25 fix via SD card. (the alternative is to risk that rapidshare download previously posted)
I would imagine it would go live via VieraCast at some point, but no guarantees since they haven't provided information on an internet release. Easier to just contact panasonic and have them send out an SD card right away.

Thanks for the reply. Can you link the thread you mentioned? Also any idea if applying the "patch" to 1.28 software will be ok? I hope folks at the Panasonic 800 number can get this to me soon (no trying to figure out what is wrong with my TV etc.) I already pulled the trigger on the Onkyo 707 on sale at Bestbuy currently.
BTW just checked my version strings and the tuner version now reflects 1.28 and eeprom version is 1.00. Were these version strings changing after the Panasonic provided SD card update?
